Some things I know I need to learn. Such as the business side of things. When you do a video about such topics I hesitate and add it to my 'watch later list'. Somethings i love learning about. I'd rather watch somebody chop wood and learn a little tip here and there than watch some bullshit on Netflix or eastenders or something.

Forgot to ask Dan. When you mentioned about dividing the ridge span up into equal divisions so as to even out those rafter spacings; 'when the rafter centres drift away from those standard measurements such as 400, 450, and 600 centres, which tie into all those other building materials that are needed for the roof such as insulation, plasterboard sheeting, does changing the rafter centres mess things about as far as fitting those other materials. Socrates said that we "learn by doing". This is the next best thing, very clear explanations, especially measuring rafter length parallel to the rafter with dimensions plumbed in, and not from the top of the ridge to the birds mouth. Really enjoyed this, thanks for the effort. Diamond Geyser!

I’m a chippy myself but I do enjoy watching some of the skill builders videos. It’s good to see the different ways that everyone does things. I much prefer Dan’s vids to robins. Robins always feel a little more forced and less real. I don’t think Dan is as natural behind the camera but that’s what makes it a little more engaging. I also think Dan is much better at explaining his method and takes the route I would. I think robin can go round the houses sometimes even for a beginner. I’ve just bought the roofing square after watching your other vid @Daniel Cox 👍

Nice work boys,traditional roofing joinery is by far my favourite job. Once you know and understand the maths behind it it is actually pretty damn simple though I have seen plenty of people absolutely baffled by it over the years!

I remember when I came across the square on Dans RU-vid a year or so ago I thought then what a great bit of kit makes life easier doesn’t get in the way when dancing throu the rafters hanging off the belt clip, as Roger says in his reviews of different squares truly a well engineered and clear bit of kit, all the best Tony 👍

Super video. Dan, at 15.34, when you talk about one previous commenter saying they measure to the bird's mouth for the rafter length, and that is wrong, I wonder if what they meant is they're measure among the 1/3 line of the rafter to the bird's mouth. In that case they're correct, as their measurement (rafter length) would end up being the same as yours. I say this because the hypotenuse you calculate is a 'line' that runs along the 1/3 line of the rafter. I always refer to the rafter length as that along the 1/3 line to the bird's mouth; just an observation. Once again, I really enjoy this more' real life' video when someone is honest enough to say that 5mm or 10mm is neither here nor there on a roof like this; you're not build a Chippendale piece of furniture. The blocks to hold the string line are a great idea. Funny thing, 25/30 years ago while working with a friend, he mistakenly referred to the bird's mouth as the bird's lips. That name has stuck every since for us. Nice to see the Kapex (looks lovely and new). I know some people knock the Festool, but I've had them from early 2000 and my experience has been almost 100% positive with only one failure which was replaced without issue by Festool UK. I really use my tools too, so people who say they're not fit for hard use are entirely mistaken in my view.

Thanks. Yes I fully understand you can measure parallel in line with the rafter however the gentleman said he measures from top of plumb cut to the birdsmouth. I think we learned at college to measure along the 1/3 line. I think if you start off very accurate you doing good, then any problems you over come but as you quite rightly say it’s not a piece of furniture and a few mm here and there are not so crucial. Can’t beat some bird lips... it’s nice to use quality tools!

I do take H&S seriously. Yes I could fall off a ladder tomorrow, but as I mentioned on a different comment I recently see a young lads foot go between 2 scaffold boards and he fell and bruised his leg. Just be sensible. Lovely job. The chippies on Skill Builder all seem to be round pegs in round holes. One question though. Does the depth of the seat cut not affect the pitch of the roof? If, for example, and to exagerate to make the issue clearer, you had a 12inch deep rafter and your birdsmouth was 1in deep , would the pitch not be different if the birdsmouth was, say, 8in deep? Or are the differences small enough to be ignored?

The depth of the seat cut doesn’t matter ( as long as you don’t take too much out) as the rafter will go down vertically so the pitch is still the same. This is why you measure on the top of the rafter then plumb it down. Hope it makes sense. Thanks

Hello guys, could you squeeze out a video on how to measure degrees of a hip ridge joining 2 different pitches. I've done a lot of trial and error and calculus and trigonometry and in-situ mark and cut and still haven't figured out how to do it.

Hi Patrick Dan was there to do the roof. It was the clients build so all the rest of it wasn't filmed. We will try and get some start to finish projects out soon.

The horizontal timber (B) (where the rafters where attached on) was the same dimensions as the rafters? The vertical timber (C) fixed in the ground 150x150? Would be really helpful if you can share

@@Patrick_86 the rafters were 150 mm (6 inch ). We fixed some 150mm as a ceiling tie reasonably high up, and timber locked them for strength ( bolt) The timbers horizontal which I pitched off were 200mm I think the vertical upright were at least 150mm if not bigger. I did put 18 mm Sterling board on top then it was covered with a waterproof covering.

Jason We don't want to promote bad practice but these guys assess the risks and chose to work off step ladders on a job like this because it is easier than spending half the day moving a tower around. The ability to move around safely when constructing a roof is a skill you have to learn and it takes years. If you aren't confident then don't do it.

@@paulbishop2161 no worries. Yes basically because it’s just a out building no engineer was involved. It had a very light roof covering so the 145 mm rafters are ok, and at 400 mm centres. It had sterling board on top, think 12 mm. It was a while back now and the memory is going..

Another great video from SB. Really love watching these skilled craftsmen at work. Have to say though, as a retired electrical engineer with many years' experience of working on sites of all sizes, some of the - ahem - 'health and safety practices' looked a bit too risky. Winced a bit to see guys not wearing gloves handling timber and standing on top step of stepladders!!! I realise that using platforms is not easy when you're constantly having to manoeuvre around the structure and it adds to costs but a lot of work from ladders/steps in this vid wouldn't be allowed on any sites I've worked on. I'm genuinely interested to hear what other craftsmen reading this comment think. Is this fairly common practice?

Hi Craig I think the world is moving on from step ladders and the like but they are portable and can work well enough if you engage your brain. I have been on a PASMA course and a scaffolding course and got the certificates but I have yet to see anyone construct a tower or scaffolding in a manner that complies with the requirements. The falls from heights among scaffolders have increased, which seems to suggest we have simply shifted the risk from one group to another. I see plenty of scaffolders wearing the harness but not clipping in. This is great for the employer who simply points to the employee's negligence.

Thanks for your comments Craig, glad you liked it. I quite often use steps, and yes I shouldn’t stand on the top run. However I’ve been using them quite a number of years and make a mental assessment when using them. I recently see a young chap walk backwards on a scaffold and put his foot between two boards as it’s a independent scaffolding and had a fall.

Thanks for your replies gentlemen. It is a marginal call sometimes deciding what access method to use and there are always grey areas. I'd be fibbing if I said I hadn't used slightly inappropriate methods on more than one occasion myself. This brief discussion has made me wonder if there might not be some scope for a SB episode on project health and safety, Roger. I say this as someone who is at the start of a house extension project and our architect has made it clear that she does not offer Principal Contractor services as part of her remit. She has explained that the CDM regs apply to domestic clients now and I wonder how many viewers of your channel might benefit from a general overview of the requirements for the management of H&S on domestic projects.
