Roof leak at the gutter and fascia board running back into the soffit. The roof looks to be leaking up under the starter row on top the drip edge and then in.

Awesome video to explain things. This is my house and much appreciated a video was made to show the details. Thank you.

I often wonder if any of Brian's customers/potential customers see their houses on his channel. If you look through his videos, you'll see that Grand Roofing shines above any other roofing company in Howard County area that I've seen. Brian puts his all into making sure that their customer's investments are properly secured by applying the best education and skill into the quality and professional work they do. I don't know what's going on down there in Howard County, but he has no shortage of content for his "worst roof ever" serious...🤦‍♂️ My gut aches seeing the kind of crap he runs into, because as homeowners, we pay a lot of money for roofs and to have to pay that out more than once is expensive

@@cristianburachek6877 got new roof and really didn’t need one. The gutter people had the gutters to high hence the arc. Had to hire an out of town Licensed independent inspector to take a look. Gutter people even complained towards him without my knowledge. Gutter people came out like 6 times before got inspector. I finally got real mad and told them I’d sue. They again asked for a diagram from inspector and he sent a very simple picture with a straight line down the edge of the roof showing the edge shingles were curled upward. Never will give gutter people two thumbs up. But at least they came back out for 8th time and lowered gutters to normal from inspector report. Had some house paint that bubble up. Nothing I can’t do myself though.

This is a great video. I had a leak that I couldn't find. Your video helped me find it. One corner of my roof had that dip. I used Henry's to cover the portion of the few shingles that had the dip. No more leaks. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Yes as a former gutter installer for 28 years. We used 8'' spikes and ferrules on our Seamless aluminum .028 Gutters. I can see that the Gutter is to high more then likely it's those hangers that folded the drip edge back as well...

I have installed roofing for decades from 3 tab to now architect and always have the shingles 1/2” over the drip edge on eaves and the rakes to create an adhesion break to shed water. If gutters are installed properly water will fall into the gutter from the adhesion break from the shingle to the drip edge , same principle going up the rake that avoids intrusion from driving rain. Starters are critical for the system to work properly as well as looking at roof area( volume ) to use either a residential or commercial gutter to direct water away from the foundation ! Newer houses in my area have huge roof areas and a lot of them have residential gutters that cannot handle the volume of water.

We used a 3/4" overhang and the drip edge. One thing I like to do is put the drip edge on top of the felt. Adds one more layer of protection.

My old garage has this exact problem. The garage sits towards the back of the property, so the problem went unnoticed. It's flat, slightly sloping roof,(block garage) and the drip edge they installed has an upward lip, and whoever installed it made only 2 cutouts(20ft run) for water to drain into the gutter. That made the problem much worse. Water was pooling up, dripping down the middle of the blocks and seeping into the garage at floor level. I now have to replace the last roof board, drip edge, and probably the gutter.

I had the same issue with a newly purchased house, but it was the leaf guard causing the problem, not installed correctly. The roof also has many flaws. It’s hard finding good quality tradesmen.

The gutter alone without screen would be fine. The problem is the screen was an after thought and the gutter wasn't lowered when screen was eventually installed. This is a common occurrence for screen installs since the gutter crews homeowners or contractors just want to slap it in quick and go but in order to do the job correctly need to go to the highest spot along the gutter run install a piece of screen as a temp to see if it needs to be lowered or not

In Ohio you have to install Iceguard first because the snow will sit there all winter, also the drip and gutter must be installed correctly

Well that was a very good video. I am dealing with the exact same problem as those curled shingles and water leaking in behind the fascia and drip edge. I was thinking they used a small 4" starter shingle instead of using a full shingle at the bottom. But, like you said their is no cheap easy way to fix this. Thanks

In our area they call that apron that was used along the bottom D edging. It is notorious for causing that lifting of the bottom shingles to happen. Thankfully it is rarely used in that manner in our area. Yes the fascia is a bit tall.

I have a local roofing company that will come out for free and do a roof inspection and write me a report that I then attach to my clients report with repair bids but only on difficult roofs or expensive super large houses or if I see damage I use them instead of having the realtor call out a roofer. Realtors love that, it saves them time and work and with the short option periods we have now they really love it. The roofer gets their name out in front of clients and the agents as well.

It amazes me when the roofers hardly nail off the eave drip. It should have alternating nails, front and back between each nail, every 3 or 4 inches, nail the piss out it!Many roofers seem not to understand the expansion of metal in different climates, with causes the up turning or curling of the eave drip over time without a good amount of alternating nail pattern. Also, I always spread roof cement also on my eave drip prior to applying starter strips, and lay the starter strips into the cement, (we live in Florida so ice an shield is optional) and I NEVER use 3 tabs for starter strips.

I'm a gutter guy and I see this all the time the shingle isent over hung the drip edge aswell and the nails in the drip have pulled out from bad wood ot they were nailed to high. We sub alot of gutters for roofing Companys and we will see this every now and again. When it's poorly secured there's not much you can do as a gutter guy. I can't tell you how many drip edges I have stepped on to try and flatten them out. But I'm not a roofer lol. And we don't push up on the drip we put our hidden hangers inside of the gutter instead of snapping on the back so that your not pushing the drip up when you lift up and when you go back to screw them all in you can just go back and notch the drip where its needed
@jane1385

The gutters were installed after the roof was done or there wouldn't be no metal nosing because the gutter would have a lip on it.. Installing gutters after the roof they lifted the nosing trying to keep the gutters straight.

Don’t those gutter guards end up being covered with so much vegetation that the water ends up backing up under the shingles? Even on a proper roof job, unlike this one.
@That5StarGutterGuy
@That5StarGutterGuy 7 месяцев назад
There are several styles of gutter guards out there. Some are highly effective & some are scam products that can do more harm than good. The type in this video is one of the more common styles available. They are very effective in keeping larger debris out of the gutters to prevent clogs in the system. No gutter protection system is 100% maintenance free but can be extremely effective depending on the product & installation method. Some shed debris better than others. It is an extremely important to inspect your roof at least twice a year for debris due to fact that accumulated debris can cause water to back up under roofing and shorten their life span. If debris is accumulating on your gutter protection it can be brushed away at that time.

@JohnMSawyer

Why would any roofer ever install the starter row of shingles so they don't overhang the gutter, or install the gutter so far out from the roof edge of the shingles, when every roofer knows that some rainwater will wick upward a little ways along the underside of the leading edge of the shingles before it drops down into the gutter? Even without the bizarre rain-trapping dip shown here, all along the starter row of shingles, if the leading edge of the shingles doesn't overlap and hang over the rear wall of the gutter to direct rainwater into the gutter, some of the rainwater that wicks upward along the underside of the shingle edge is going to be deposited onto the front edge of the plywood panels under the shingles and eventually deteriorate them (and if the panels are OSB, they'll crumble even faster), and some of the water will go behind the rear of the gutter and get to the fascia wood, eventually destroying it too.

What if the water is coming out or leaking at the front edge of the fascia and soffit joint? I have a similar problem but the leak is coming out of the soffit vent. I opened it up and it’s wet at the bottom where the fascia and soffit meet in the front
