GAF had a class action lawsuit. It ended last year. Missed it by one year. I have to have my 14 yr old roof replaced. Timberline shingles came off after a 50mph gust
What your looking at is called splice, it's where two rolls are joined together , either in the matte or polyester or whatever material they are using for different applications. We get them all the time in our 30lb Tile guard,torch rolls etcetera. Poor quality control. Cali roofer checkin in
Back when I started roofing in 2001 was before GAF merged with Elk. GAF made a “lifetime” shingle. I don’t know how many of those roofs I’ve had to strip & re-do within 10 years of them being installed. Those shingles are failing everywhere. Even after the GAF/Elk merge their shingles still seem to not perform as advertised. Unfortunately, the two guys I worked for used mostly timberlines. Not sure what’s a better product. Owens Corning? IKO? Certenteed?
@@teamexteriorsllc.roofing486 I have been watching RU-vid channel called roofing insights which was quite interesting and one of the roofing contractors that came out was promoting the timberline shingles but their sales tactics were so appalling I am going to go with malarkey shingles and probably the roofing company called ibex. I’m in the Pacific Northwest Anyway the roofing insight channel did place atlas towards the top but I don’t have any contractors in my area that use those shingles
I've never used GAF shingles before and i never will, its crazy how clueless ppl in the comments defend gaf garbage products, gaf should warranty their products regardless of licensing or experience of installers, the shingles shown in this video clearly show a defective product .
I came across a few of those. Durring manufacturing, Its the ones where the fiberglass matting that is on a spool comes the end and they tape it to the next one to feed it through the machine. I'm still not sure if they are meant to end up in circulation or if quality controls not doing there job
@@alexchopper7997 I just accepted a bid for a new roof yesterday and we're having 50 mph winds again today. Hoping I don't lose more shingles before the roof gets replaced. GAF is no help at all. They want you to jump thru a lot of hoops just to deny your claim. I missed the class action suit by one year
OC duration w/ surenail strip is the best shingle for the money. Its not the cheapest but will beat all the others on the nail pull test, has the least factory defects, has a large common bond and the tar adhesive seals down better on the surenail strip than it does trying to seal to granular on all the others. Also if your an OC preferred or platnium installer, OC will cover material & labor if theres a defect. If your a preferred installer for the other shingles, they will only cover material and you will have to pay labor out of your pocket.
Good Lord! that must be an example of the "Delamination" flaw that ive heard about the HDZ GAF... never actually seen it b4...But man, that would make you run the Other way from this brand..!!
Manufacturers have their heads up their @$$ with the amount of adhesive for the back of the shingles. If you have noticed that they changed the stagger distance between courses it's because they are having issues with rain water getting in-between the sealing area and traveling to the butt joint and leaking under the roof. This is prevalent on 4/12-6/12 roofs. I have seen it one time on a 7/12 pitch where the installers had a few courses that had 5 " jumps on a few courses.
I have been installing GAF for 13 years and have never had a problem at all. Never had any blow offs. you probably are not a certified or Master elite roofer of GAF would have covered it. You probably bought old shingles from Home Depot or Lowes not from a distributer. GAF has a full 50 year warranty on the HDZ shingle.
Thank you for the video - these HDZs are basically disintegrating... This is why I went with Malarkey Vista - probably the best out there for the money. Cant wait for the roofers to install them in a few weeks.
you know bro, Ive been torn between malarky vista, GAF hdz and OC duration for months... ive heard the delamination stories but this is the 1st time ive seen it do well explained...this video Completely dismissed those gaf hdz off my list.. wouldnt touch with a 10 ft pole after seeing this! ironically, 80% of the houses in my area, that had their roofs just redone after a mega hail storm, have went with the hdz gaf.. thats why I considered it.. but this vid tells you all you need to know... shocking!
That’s because insurance companies give fly by night roofers supplements, they then give the customer a cheap shingle for their own profit instead of a good one. Welcome to insurance gouging.

Recent storm damage in MO and everyone is going with Duration but I researched and if I went OC it would be "storm" otherwise I am considering Malarkey Vista. How do you like yours a year after install? Considering using their underlay etc also.
What is that duct tape?? Who put tape on shingles? If you have done shingling, you will know that is a very strange finding. I have used Timberline HDZ and there is no such strange shingle construction like that. Also you nail anywhere between the white lines, that is the nail zone. Those shingles look like someone tried to repair after install. with tape and maybe tar.
Mine look just like this. Timberline shadow. Only lasted 14 yrs in a temperate climate. They have that strip on them. They have delaminated and have ruined the white trim on my house.
My roof was put on Aug 2008... I have to have it replaced. 15 years? In a temperate climate? We used GAF Timberline Shadow. I'm a senior citizen. I cannot afford a new roof. I also cannot crawl up on my roof to send them a "sample shingle" only for GAF to tell me it's the way they were installed or someone walked on the roof... DO NOT BUY ANY GAF SHINGLES!!!
@@dcwatashi everyone likes to claim how good their warranties are....Until you need to file a claim! getting Any shingle maker to honor warranty without them trying to pass the buck, seems to be common.

GAF. will likely only replace with similar material ......no labor or disposal...... but who would want it... always save sample of packaging for date and run numbers, does not matter what manufacturer. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Clearly a Monday morning half asleep and hungover quality controller that left those pass. Been installing gaf exclusively for the past14 - 15 yrs and never seen a defect like that. Have hdz on my personal house and not one so much as lifted let alone delamanated and just had 155mph winds from hurricane Ian in south Florida. Can't say the same for other manufacturers that were scattered on the ground everywhere. If they held up to that hurricane for almost 9 hrs and never budged then I'm a customer for life
scotty, there are Always exceptions to stories like this, though Ive heard of this occuring with GAF b4, 1st time ive seen it upclose in the vid... the problem is that feedback like urs, and im Not doubting ur sincerity, such feedback can conflict with feedback like this here and so the homeowner ends up royally confused and doesnt know what to believe... thats what ive ran into researching shingles when attempting to choose a brand for the reroof...its like a rabbit hole, the more you look into in, the more confusing and Less clearcut things can become becuz there is an Absense of consistancy in reports and they often conflict...some people swearing by a shingle and others saying theyve had aweful experiences with the same brand...
@@skip741x3 exactly ..im in the same position now...getting quotes for a reroof and all are quoting GAF TIm HDZ....maybe i should go with Owens Corning.. My Certainteed architecturals lasted 34 years!!! Im googling the class action on GAF but there was also one on Certainteed .....
6 Months??..... disgusting when a company wont stand behind their products and look for the " get out of jail freecard" by blaming the installers etc etc.. Why do you think Hyundai grew so fast?? Because of their incredible warranty and standing behind it!!
