Roof Tent Camp in Heavy Rain and Wind. North Wales Adventure with Jason Eke. BBQ in the rain.

In this video, I am heading up to North Wales for a long overdue mountain fix! Travelling up with Jason Eke from Trailguide Pictures in my Land Rover, we finally arrive after a long drive and an annoying breakdown and get things set up for the night - my new (not new) Alu Cab roof tent is my overnight accommodation (massive thank you to Dave and Lucie!) and Jason is in the hammock in the vehicle.
Having set things up and creating some comfortable space inside to escape the heavy rain and strong winds, we cook up some dinner - burgers cooked on the fire-pit bbq (in the rain).
We spend the evening with a couple of beers and planning our big hike in the mountains for the next day (coming up in the next video!)
Morning brings clearing weather and the promise of sunshine for our hike, so we drink coffee, eat a hearty breakfast and pack our bags for the day - its going to be a big epic adventure…
Thanks for watching.

Driving a Land Rover to North Wales… in this uncertain world there are two certainties in this scenario: the Landie will break down and the weather will be shite. It’s comforting that some things aren’t going to change.

What memories you brought back for me. Last time I was in North wales camping was 1976. Year of the heatwave, drought and forest fires. I was around the Capel Curig area, and all 6 of us got dysentery because a sheep died in the up stream part of the fresh water supply, SteriTabs did not quite protect us oddly enough ;) Then had to bug out because the fires were headed in our direction. Had a LWB Landy, with a bumper to bumper rack & a ladder beside the rear door. I could really relate to how this trip must have been for you! Nice video Simon, and thanks for it. Looking forward to the next part. Be well. ;o)

Good call Simon. It won’t do any harm to drive it that way for a while. Good luck with the repair. When I did mine, I also fitted extended axel breathers. Tube that came up much higher than any possible water level. My diff gave out because I didn’t regularly change the oil. When the diff gets hot with normal running, should it be cooled quickly by going through a puddle or water, it’s sucks air in the breather and in some cases water too. This greatly degrades the oil. So without regular oil changes, the oil is not at its optimum for long. Fitting extended breathers prevents any water ingress.

While watching, I began to think about how blessed my family is to be residing where we are. Our subdivision is located with an entrance on the General Doughlas McAuthar national highway, central Luzon island, Philippines. We are considered a city. On the flip side, it is not a long hike until you enter some rural areas. My thoughts turned to folks trapped in a city environment. Some would say why on earth would two guys put themselves through this just to grill a burger. They do not "get it." Others would pray for a chance to get out and experience what we all just viewed. Simon, enjoy the journey whether alone or out with all your buddies.

Not sure why you need a roof tent there is plenty of room in a big 110. Cooking on coal, why? And why all that gear. We did a circle the Baltic trip in mid winter in a smaller 2 door Rangerover, plenty of room. -35c one night on the Finnish/Russian border and survived. After Belgium, every other night below zero all day long. Came back bought a roof tent, sold it after one night's use....wobbling about up on the roof for what? Kit out the 110 for £100 and keep in simple, people do that sort of thing with what they can carry. Sorry lads.

It is 26 years ago since I last walked in the Mountains of Wales. We pitched my tent at very basic campsite. Some would call it Wild Camping by today's standard of what people think of as Wild Camping, It had one toilet and a cold tap over an old worn out Belfast Sink, and the Farmer would come round in the morning to collect your pitch fees, something really expensive like £1.50 per night. We where there to Bag the 13 as it was back then Munro's. We started of from the campsite up Trefan if I have spelt it correctly, and spent the day walking the Glidders, my kneed went on the ascent of the third and my Dads knee when on the descent of the filth and final of the day. I made as massive mistake of leaving the inner soles in my boots, As I was I the Army at the time I thought it would be find as they have been well and truly broken in and I had don't many a March in them in Combat order. How wrong was I it was like walking on cheese graters by the feel of my feet. thankfully no injuries to my feet just very uncomfortable. (I could wait to put on my trainers once we got back and they felt like walking around with pillows under my feet.) We cam down our own way to get to the A5 below us for some flat walking back to the tent. Sadly we never did bag the rest as that was my last proper Hill walking adventurer, knackered knees and Arthritis has put a stop to that. If I could I'd do that all over again including the mistake with my boots. Your Video just reminded my of how much I enjoyed the day.

Right below Tryfan - it hasn’t changed much, but it’s exactly what I live in a campsite - you can keep the clubhouses, swimming pools and middle aged men dressed up as bears - give me a cold water washing up sink out in the weather with a view of a mountain any day! 😁

Great video and glad you are enjoying your roof tent and using that old Landy. Of course your gearbox went wrong… it’s a Land Rover!

11.28, take the rear prop off and put the diff lock in, it'll allow you to drive in front wheel drive only.

pro tip to get a chharcoal to light without a chimny take out the charcoale pan and liine the bootem with twigs. put the pan back in and the charcoal. light it. the wood will burn off fast but leave a hot coal bed to bring eveerything up 2 temp.

I’m in the USA, came on to see what you cook on camp outs. It’s the same thing I make in the middle of Missouri.
