Well John I do roofers but only on my terms now and not in your area. My terms for roofers now are... 10yd dumpsters is the maximum size, tile or clay roofs concrete dumpsters only. They have to pay for 5 tons upfront instead of the 2 tons I normally include. Most of them don't like the additional 3 tons upfront so that eliminates a majority of them.
Been doing this for 30 years now in northern N.H. a lot of what you said is so true. Wish i would have run my business like you do I might have made a decent living. Enjoy your videos
My family ran a successful roofing company for decades and loved doing it. We had dedicated trucks to remove waste because in our market there wasn't always room for dumpsters. We did use dumpsters on occasion and had great relationships with haulers. The problem with the roofing industry is that most of the roofers around think that because they have a ladder and a pickup truck they can roof. Most only lasted a couple of years, never paid for licensing, insurance, training or proper equipment. I can spot them a mile away. Sorry you had such a bad experience.
I would have loved doing business with someone like you and how you look at business. I'm sure my experience would have been much different If you would have been my first roofing experience. Im just starting up and what you shared has been going through my mind. I use to be a lumber salesman and we had a hard time with roofers. There are some good honest ones out there, but its far and few in my part of Alabama. Thanks for the video!
Agreed. Just like in any industry, there's some solid guys out there regardless of how bad of a reputation that particular industry has. I've just yet to meet those solid guys in the roofers space yet....
The good roofers have 1 trailer for sure because they cannot trust the big dumpster companies. when they are doing 2 jobs or a big job they mights need another. Roofers are sketchy in general... I am a roofer and dumpster guy....Roofers will make you money but beware!
My company owner is a roofer that has dumpsters as a side gig. We are ready at a moments notice to take care of the roofing jobs he has going on. Roofers know the exact size of their job. It's part of ordering the supplies they will need. But sometimes the amount of strip-off is a surprise. Some areas were stripped off last time it was replaced and other areas were just layed over the top.
We run a residential trash pickup service and have issues like this every day! It just amazes me what you see and hear out here every day, from employees and customers alike! Running your own business is better than any college education you could ever get! Just unbelievable!
I work with roofers, although rarely. They get one chance with me and I tell them up front, don’t lie to me. If you lie to me and overload my dumpster, we’re done. I can generally gauge the job on arrival. No one has lied to me, yet. One guy told me no one would work with him. I straight up asked him if he jerked the last dumpster company around. Silence. Oh no.... pistol whipped too...😂 I've had my fair share too in the beginning.🤕 Roofers know how to measure right. But they lie on squares and layers so you can't figure out the right weight so you can charge the weight up front. 250-300lbs per squares. Keep up the good content 👌
We add roofing contractors one at a time as a test basis. Flat tires and weight discrepancy is a real thing with roofers. 10% are pure gold 60% are clueless 30% are stingy Always extra tonnage and full amount up front when booking.
My dad did roofing in Florida over 30 years ago now and the company he worked for was big enough to have its own roll off trucks and dump trucks and he drove them because he went into roofing with a CDL
I think this is situational based on location as you said. My city is only 100,000 people. If a trade screws over people then word gets around quick and they do not have a large number of choices. They will find no one will do business with them.
Every market def has their own ins and outs of how dumpster rentals work. Unfortunately for me, roofers in my market are the guys I avoid regardless of the situation. Glad to hear you are in an area where the fear of not paying makes them want to pay their bill. That's a nice little kicker to help you out. A few good roofers have helped propel my business incredibly. You have to fire the bad ones tho. Take payment prior to drop off and keep the card on file for overages.
There are good roofers who are honest and trustworthy I would agree. For how I run my show currently, the roofing industry isn't one I'm interested in working with. I'm sure that will change over time, but for now I'm going to focus my efforts and energy in other sectors.
That’s a very smart way of doing it. For every roofer take card details down as payment and have them sign an agreement on delivery for over weight charges being billed to the provided credit card. Problem solved
My current problem with roofers is their lack of ability to successfully plan. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “only need it ‘till tomorrow “. Yet 3 or 4 days later they are like “I’ll call when done”. But MF I have a schedule that’s 2 weeks deep!!!
I had a guy tell me he only needed it for two days. Told him it’s all good, I will be picking up on such and such date. He said what if I need it longer. I repeated, I will be picking up on such and such date. I have a schedule to keep so should you
For those watching this and still want to take care of roofers, i have a screen shot in my phone pictures asking "where do they want it" "Where do you want me to park the dumpster" "That car is in the way"in spanish. Got it from google language translator. Show them that screen and its easier.
They do the same in Colorado for the most part. And all their trailers are destroyed and when they pull them down the road oh can see they are so over weighted.
I think roofers and their behavior is the same is just about every state. It's why I don't work with them at all, just not interested in the games they play.
Here are my thoughts. You made mistakes early on like we all have. You got bullied by “those” types of guys. Totally get it. You’re taking those experiences that could have been avoided and have turned it into missing out of $x of revenue. You got pushed around early on, who cares, but your way of doing business has changed and so will your experience with roofers. To me, from the outside looking in, it seems like you’re a super nice guy but to say you take things personal is an understatement and will delay your pursuit of your business goals. I honestly would be nervous if i ever rented a dumpster from you because I’d be nervous I’d leave a scratch! Haha just giving you a hard time but if you change your thought process it sounds like your business will skyrocket. And good for you!
I forgot to say there are good companies and then there are the fly by night guys 80% and they go in cheap but when the roof leaks there shut down and opened up under a new name such is life cause any body can lay shingles. Its not rocket science but probably the most important part of your home. Ex roofer here 😅
I dont understand your complaint. Take payment before you drop, if it goes over weight then charge your fees. Thats part of your job. Your missing out on extra income by not working with roofers.
The roofer/sliding guys as a group. This how we deal with them in Portland Oregon . Only rent them 14 yard dumpsters for 5 day term extra days $20 per days plus a dump fees $.08 per lbs. deposit of $399 per 1000 sqft of house. We get all payment up front .My delivery time is day before the job starts and pickup day after job it done. We place dumpster on site with out roofer there a lot of the time. I get lot of call and walk away from lot of offers. But I book about about $60k to $80 a month with roofers/sliding guys as a group. I think your video's are great thank you for making them.
