@@CoC_Lord Because he is an excellent quarterback who will get the Falcons to the division title in a weak division and put them into the playoffs. There was no guarantee that they would be able to draft Penix. Several teams tried to move up to get him, and some teams had him ranked the second or third best player in the draft. Clearly Caleb is the cream of the crop, I think the first can't miss proposition since John Elway. But Penix has the best and most accurate ball of all the quarterbacks in the draft this year and next year will not have a great crop like this year. This year's QB class could rival 1983. Cousins would have gotten the Falcons to the playoffs for four years in a row. But that means poor draft position so I think a superbowl would be very unlikely. Let's suppose that Cousins plays for four years because he is tearing it up. Penix is twenty four years old right now. So in four years he will be 28. If he is as good as I think he will be, he will play into his later thirties or even later, which means that the QB position could be cast in solid gold for the Falcons for up to 14 years. The first 50 million this year goes against the cap for Cousins. But next year the 50 million does not go against the cap. So they would have great cap space even if they cut him. I think two years of learning for Penix would have him chomping at the bit and honed like a well stropped straight razor, ready the shave the entire NFL. But you never know. Anyway, I think the Falcons are brilliant. Did you know that no position in the NFL besides quarterback is worth more than one point per game when amortized? So investing in quarterback is brilliant, and they will not have the 8th pick or better with Cousins at QB and a boatload of great QBs making the 8th pick a goldmine may NEVER happen AGAIN. IMO-YMMV

People who say it was dumb to draft Penix are not thinking clearly. The Falcons will win the division with Cousins, because that division is not very good. If you add the best non-QB athlete on offense or defense, they also win the division but do not win the superbowl. Does anyone seriously think the Falcons would be a superbowl contender? What division leader are they better than, even with another good player? The first defender came off in the middle of the round so it does not look like he was worthy of pick 8. They addressed their defensive needs with later picks. After one year, Cousins is still eligible for the $50 million but it does not go against the cap. So after one year, they can go with Penix with only a cash penalty that it appears the owner is OK with. And if they are tearing it up and going far into the playoffs, they could play Cousins for two or three years. Meanwhile, Penix is learning like Brett Farve's understudies Aaron Rogers and then Jordan Love and Steve Young under Joe Montana and every other excellent QB who had to wait. Does Penix know the playbook like the back of his hand? Has he learned all the ins and outs of NFL defenses? Without a doubt, there would be no harm in sitting him if Cousins is tearing it up. And if Cousins is immobile or still hurt or gets re-injured the Falcons are still a playoff team. All I can say is that time will tell, but I have never seen any situation where a great quarterback sitting in the wings actually hurt the team in the long run. Clearly, it lit a fire under Aaron Rogers and he had some of his best seasons ever despite his age. Cousins is in his late thirties and he is not going to play for ten more years. The analysis by the Falcon's management is spot on. Cousins and Penix are both great character guys. I don't think they will giving each other the stink eye and throwing tantrums.

It wasn’t dumb to draft Penix it was dumb to sign Cousins
@danncorbit3623
@danncorbit3623 28 дней назад
@@GhettoLenin Cousins is 7th in the NFL for QBR, which is pretty elite. There was no way to know they would be able to get Penix at number 8. Several other teams tried to move up to get him. He was ranked as high as second or third on some NFL teams QB lists. Penix can learn from a real pro. Both of them are high character guys. Fifty million is a lot per year, but that is the going cost for an excellent quarterback today. Look at the prices being bandied about for Prescott. While they owe 50 million per year guaranteed for this year and next year, only this year's salary goes against the cap. So if they are not going deep into the playoffs, they could change QB without cap penalty after one year. I think there would be big value in having Penix sit and learn for a year or two (or maybe three -- it did not hurt Aaron Rodgers or Steve Young to do that). Now, I cannot say that you are wrong, because this is a matter of viewpoint and if there are different viewpoints there is not a right one and a wrong one. It is possible that there will be no benefit from signing Cousins, but I think there will be. And if it does not work out because Cousins is still injured or gets re-injured, they have excellent insurance.

They sound dumb when it comes to Penix and the Falcons. Falcons haven't had a QB since Ryan was in his prime. I wouldn't have paid Kirk, but it makes sense why they got him. Same for Penix. Penix, next to Williams, is the best QB in this draft. You could argue he's the best pocket passer from this draft. You got Kirk coming off an Achilles which is a major injury. He might not be the same. It's insurance in case he doesn't come back healthy. Still wouldn't have paid him, but the moves make sense. Dallas Turner? Really? They tried that with Vic Beasley, so I can see why they didn't go pass rusher. Not all are the same, but if Cousins doesn't come back right away or isn't right, this pick will show everyone why it makes sense. Best case scenario, Kirk is healthy for the length of the contract, plays well, wins, and then at the end, Penix starts and is amazing. Just like Rodgers and Love. It makes sense. They used to draft guys and them sitting was ok. Now, you have to start everyone immediately? Nah man. This is the smartest move for the next 15-20 years. That's what you want out of a draft pick and a QB. You guys sound dumb over there at ESPN.

It’s a terrible pick. Love was 21 and a project qb. Penix will be 25 by the start of the season, and is anything but a project. @jordangreen1221
@jordangreen1221 Месяц назад
@@CoC_Lord We for one don’t know how well Penix would’ve transitioned to the NFL as an immediate starter, he could immediately thrived or fallen under pressure but what we do know is QBs who sit first tend to perform well once they become starters. I understand a cheaper QB option would’ve been great but we already tried that with Mariota, Ridder and Heincke and they sucked. Even if we have a Minshew or better bridge QB the issues is they always have a ceiling that isn’t so high and tend to play very inconsistent. Kirk when healthy helps us win now and helps us potentially beat out Baker and the Bucs which no bridge QB is going to do. Kirks contract is also structured to where most of his guaranteed money is within the first two years which makes with easy to cut him after and start Penix. Hunter, Wilkins or Turner would’ve all been great additions for this defense but how much would they really have moved the needle? Hunter is old and has been injured more frequently the past few years. Wilkins only beefs up a spot we already are good at on the D line at DT. Turner would’ve been the only guy that could’ve possibly made an impact but how much was to be seen. Additionally the defense was addressed most of the draft anyway.

I did not see them do much in the draft. At least the patriots did a lot. They drafted too young very good receivers to rebuild with Drake. He’s only 21 years old so there’s no need to rush drake he can sit the first year.

@youtubeconnollyfamily hopefully a franchise QB, we got a rotational DT that'll most likely replace Jonathan Allen, a beast nickel corner, and most likely a starting TE that's a beast.

How’s the Falcons drafting Michael Penix any different than the Patriots drafting Drake Maye or Minnesota drafting JJ McCarthy? Neither one of those quarterbacks will be the starters this year unless their starters get injured. But, they are the future. The Packers gave us the blueprint with them drafting Aaron Rodgers while they still had a healthy Brett Favre and again drafting Jordan Love while they had a healthy Aaron Rodgers. I don’t know what this obsession that owners and the media have with Kirk Cousins. It must be because he’s blonde and he reminds them of their son or grandson. That’s why they’ve given him premium contracts. It’s certainly not because of his play on the field, especially during the playoffs. The guy’s 1-6 in the playoffs in 12 seasons and he’s supposed to be the savior. 🙄

only 3 QBs will work in their situations 1. Caleb Williams 2. Jayden Daniels 3. Bo Nix - JJ McCarthy will get exposed when his loaded receiving core cycles out, he’s good not great. good doesn’t win super bowls, the Vikings wouldn’t know that though - Drake Maye is unfinished and in a bad situation, Patriots should’ve traded down for more picks and offense to help the QB situation, draft a QB later in the rounds - Michael Penix Jr is great, but I don’t know whether or not the Falcons gig will work out for him and he might want outta there after the 4 years

You’re also expecting that none of these players gets better. If patrick mahomes was as good as he was when he played his first year. He would’ve been the first draft pick but he actually got better behind smith for a year.
