_A couple of quick notes not mentioned/talked about in the video:_ This video guide uses the Room EQ Wizard download from it's main site, www.roomeqwizard.com, instead of the beta version featured over at AVNirvana.com. I did this mainly because AVNirvana requires you to create a free account at their site in order to download REW, which some people may not be comfortable with. They are similar in many ways but the latest beta versions from AVNirvana do have a more fully featured menu for things like the Tone Generator, and will allow you to name any measurements you do before taking them. If you're ok creating a free account there then by all means use that version, but you should be able to follow my tutorials just the same with the base version. If you're running into graphical issues and weird glitches with REW, then I'd suggest disabling graphics acceleration by going to C:\Program Files (x86)\REW on you computer and locating the file "roomeqwizard.vmoptions", opening that document with Notepad and adding the following text at the bottom and then saving: -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false That should fix those graphical oddities. If you're installing the beta version from AVNirvana, it will give you the option to turn off graphics acceleration during the install. I'd recommend turning it off to avoid any potential issues.
For anyone not having luck with ASIO4ALL I was able to utilize JAVA for all 7 bed layer speakers. I had to go to the the control panel on my laptop and search sound. Then i selected change sound card settings. The AVR was listed as a device and I was able to configure for 7.1 sound. When I went back to REW I made sure to select the output as the AVR that was prefixed by EXCL and everything worked perfectly.
Quick question; i have problems with assio4all because there is no sound form the individual speakers I want to measure and couldn't figure out what the issue is. When using Java you said that you have the option to measure the individual speaker by choosing them from a drop down menu like in assio4all?
I’ve been playing around with REW for a while now, but I always like seeing that I’m doing it right. Plus, I didn’t understand the whole ASIO thing, but now I do. Great video, keep it up!
Thanks Brad great Video, great effort. I have an issue my Yamaha A3070 is not visible in Output section in Pref. In REW with Both Java and ASIO. I stead a sony sound card for HD audio is visible, and I could hear only FL and FR speakers . Csn you help
@HomeThearerGamer I've been watching your REW videos, would you know of a list of what to do in order for setting up a system with REW from speaker positioning, levels, crossovers up to acoustic treatments etc Cheers for your videos, they have been great :)
Same issue here...ASIO Control Panel does NOT list any Nvidia options for me and I have a dedicated RTX 2070 Super in my laptop (connecting via HDMI to the Denon).
@@briansalyer1603 Hi Brian, sorry, maybe a typo... do you mean right "drivers"? I don't want to invest in another laptop or pc. I have a nice high-end laptop, I don't think I should have to buy a cheap laptop to make this work.
@@briansalyer1603 Someone in my system isn't playing nice and I just want to find the slacker! lol it's either ASIO or NVidia or Denon or REW but someone isn't cooperating.
Hey ... Easy to understand ..great and many thanks , but being a newb :) whats the story on calibrating the soundcard .. i have a laptop with a umik and a hdmi connection to a denon receiver... Is it necessary and if so how does one do it?
Great question and thanks for commenting! With HDMI and a USB mic (like the UMIK-1), sound card calibration isn’t necessary or required. Calibration of the sound card only really applies if you’re using an XLR measurement microphone plugged into an interface (a much more complicated setup than a USB mic in my opinion), or you using analog outputs from your computer.
So Brad, I’m new to this, and this is an older tutorial. I want to measure my 5 ear level speakers ( I can do subs later) I do have a 5.4.6 setup, but, the 5 is good for now. Do I pretty much follow the steps in this video, or are there other steps to consider? It’s been a little frustrating thus far! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello sir, why does my REW software look different than yours? I followed everything on your video, but I can't get the pink noise to out out of my Denon speakers. The sound comes out of my laptop. Frustrated
I don’t think you can. But then again, I’ve never tried it myself. I would question the accuracy of those cheap mics included with AV receivers though.
I never assumed anyone was using a USB microphone, but I did say that some type of measurement microphone is required in order to take measurements in REW. The UMIK-1 is one of the most popular and recommended measurement microphones used with REW.
This video should've started off by saying you need a Windows PC to follow along. As an Apple Mac user I cannot download ASIO 4 all. This video is for window users.
thank you for this video!! I was able to follow your 4 part how to video series, it was extremely helpful. One request, could you please make a video on explaining what we should be looking for or whats a "good/ideal" curve compared to a "bad" one?
WATCHOUT!!! The ASIO4ALL has been hacked with a ‘DriverUpdate’ download button and install that downloads SEVERAL files to you hard drive and asks for your email and password to unlock them. The ASIO option shows up as a driver in REW, but there is no associated output file. I used Control Panel to remove the software, and I hope I’m safe.
@@HomeTheaterGamer I was the ASIO4ALL site (or looked like it), but there were big ‘DOWNLOAD’ buttons everywhere, and I just clicked, it said ‘Driver Update’ and I installed it, then it started downloading files to my hard drive, including a file named ‘hackthis’ and my REW screen was not responding as yours did, so I went back and watched more closely how your screen reacted when you installed ASIO4ALL, and I realized that I had been fooled. I uninstalled ‘DriverUpdate’ and deleted the downloaded file, went back to the ASIO4ALL site, and this time clicked on ‘Home’ which took me to a screen that listed the different language versions. The English version installed like yours did and I hope I’m safe. I wasn’t paying as much attention as I needed to, but at least I didn’t give them my email password.
Thank you for this video, it answers many of the questions I have had. Especial how to select individual speakers instead of just selecting only the left or right channels.
I am probably missing something, but on REW, when I select OUPUT in the preferences (after selecting ASIO) it does not give me the “high definition audio 1-8” - it just stated “Not Connected 1 and 2” and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. Any help would be really appreciated.
@Home Theater Gamer I own a Mac. I’m trying to use REW but since ASIO4All doesn’t come in a Mac download I’m completely lost! Can anyone help? Or direct me to a video that uses a Mac?
Excellent intro to REW. Very easy to understand. I have seen other videos where they go into unnecessary details and you loose the gist of it by the time you are done watching it.
Yeyy, thanks... Now I can start measuring center and sorrounds with Asio. Do you already have a video for nessesary steps for just measuring the center and sorround speakers? Or follow the last 10 minutes of part 4 REW EQ tutorial is enough? Thanks again I'm a fan
Thanks for this video. It's very straightforward and easy to follow which is exactly what I need as a beginner. I tried following the "basic" REW video from Audioholics but it was still pretty technical for me. Once I get enough hands on practice I'll probably revisit them again.
Hello Brad, great video!I've been leaving a lot from your content. Would you be open to coaching me through having a proper home theater set up, maybe like an hour long? I would pay you for your time.
Your videos have been immensely appreciated and helpful. It took me a while, but I now have my mini dsp setup with my dual SVS SB3000 subs. The bass is super smooth and blends beautifully in my room. One thing I don't remember seeing mentioned regarding ASIO4ALL. Initially when I measured my center channel, the tone was extremely distorted and crackly. After digging on forums, I learned that I needed to raise the buffer rate in the asio4all control panel. It was initially set at 512 buffer rate, and I had to turn it up to 704 buffer rate. Once raised I was able to run my center and surrounds tests.
I want to do a few measures on my soundbar subwoofer. If i select "High Definition Audio 4" is it only going to send audio to my sub and make the soundbar silent?
In theory, yes (sending audio only to the sub, soundbar being silent). However, some soundbars, not all, may not play nicely with this setting and still emit audio from the soundbar in tandem with the sub. Hard to say as each and every soundbar I've tested over the years has been different, although admittedly I haven't tested many.
Very good info. My issue is that I can’t get any sound coming from the center or surrounds, only from the front speaker… The output box shows the 1 to 8 output, the level bar shows an output is sent out but nothing is playing out of my receiver ? Any suggestions? Tks.
I’m having my surround left play in back left and surround right gets doubled in back right when i test. How do i fix the 2 channels so that they don’t come out of channels already in use?
Now it says unable to access the selected device. Excel microphone (USB audio device) does not have any lines supporting PCM_SIGNED 48000.0 HZ, 24 bit, stereo, 6 bytes/frame, little endian Try a different sample rate
Awesome video. Just got my Umik-1 yesterday. Only took 3 days to ship from Hong Kong to me in California! Getting everything configured today so this video was a ton of help and great timing.
I don't believe the ecm8000 comes with a calibration file. You can Google it and find one to download, but it won't be accurate for precise measurements above 8Khz or so.
As someone who just very recently purchased a MacBook Air, I seriously feel your pain. I dropped a good amount of money on a great Anker USB-C that supports fast SSD speeds (I edit on external drives), but the HDMI output is extremely unstable, so I spent another $70 on Apple's official USB-C to digital A/V dongle.
Where in the pkg is ASIO4All in the mac version of REW? Is there a tutorial on how to use ASIO4ll in the mac version of REW? Thanks in advance for your help.
ASIO does not work on my Surface Pro 9 / windows 11 / no nvidia. It causes my audio driver to stop putting any sounds out until i restart. Tried all troubleshooting techniques I found online. I am going to need to find an alternative to ASIO.
I’ve been testing some different methods for an updated tutorial series and using the latest REW beta, you can now use JAVA for multi-channel calibration (up to 7.1 channels). You just need to select the proper output device, which has EXL in front of it (so something like EXCL: Denon Receiver for example). Then you should be able to select each individual channel without ever even messing with ASIO4ALL. You can find the latest REW beta version here if you’re interested: www.avnirvana.com/threads/v5-20-14-early-access-build.11154/.
@@HomeTheaterGamer thank you I’m going to check it out. The Java Excel did work but sounds coming out distorted and messed up. When I tried to take measurements I couldn’t follow through. I definitely would love to see the beta maybe this video link or the beta solve my problem. Thanks again and happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Setup is 5.1.2. (Or 7.1). Whenever I play, the test tones in REW, left back and right back (channels 7&8) will come out of the same speakers as surround left and surround right respectively. The correct side just the absolute wrong speaker. How to fix this? Thanks!
Amazing video. I have a Yamaha RX ADVENTAGE A6A. Do I use one of the HDMI in the back of the receiver. I only have a USB port in the front of it. Thank you for any advice and help Oh never mind I just saw you used one HDMI in the back. I just used your link to buy the mic. Thank you.
I definitely will in a future video. Still learning about the waterfall graph and once I feel like I have a firm grasp on it, I will for sure make a video about it.
Thanks for the awesome video. I'm new to home theater and am trying to dial my system in. I've built some acoustic panels for reflection and absorbing some echo. I figured REW is my next step. Going to buy a mic and get started.
Thank you very much !!! I gonna watch all of your video first.... Then I will - buy everything you advice - configure my home theater - and perhaps later on, will replace my sub velodyne 1200R by a SVS 2000 pro. Seem it worth the upgrade. Thanks a lot for all the great video and tutorials you made. All you video are as interesting as addictive 😃👍👍👍
what am i missing? when i run through these steps and start measuring I'm only getting sound from my left speaker. Using a basic Asus e200 win 10 laptop with REW 5.1 installed and umik1.
Hello fairly new to home audio I bought 2 svs PB 2000 I was thinking doing the Room eq. Here’s my question my home theater is my living room with an open floor plan would room correction help?
Hello. Really good video. I use rca from my laptop into my old preamplifier. I want to integrate my subwoofer with my main speakers which play full range to 35 Hz. Did you make a video about it? I know there are many old hifi freaks who would like to learn a bit about it :)
@@HomeTheaterGamer Yeah, I just saw that and I do apologise, I have an inner ear infection which is not improving my mood and when it comes to computers I feel like an idiot child. So my apologies.
i don't install all that Asio4 stuff and simply activate 7.1 output in windows over HDMI output, even with Java in REW you get support and can select evry single cannel called FL C FL SR SL SBL SBL LFE ! sound is output from windows in Dolby True HD and if you click in Windows audio Spacial support you get even Atmos ! why you are not doing this way instead all that "audio 1 , audio 2 stuff with Asio ??? thank you
This video is over 2 years old now, which at the time of making this video, ASIO4ALL was pretty much required for multichannel in REW and JAVA didn’t support multichannel output yet within REW (just stereo). ASIO4ALL basically isn’t required when using REW anymore (thank God) which is why I’m working on new REW videos to replace these older ones. To clarify though: REW still doesn’t natively support measuring Dolby Atmos overheads or front wides, even if you set that within Windows settings. That requires loading and playing back Dolby Atmos measurement files within REW.
@@HomeTheaterGamer ok thank you for clarifying this 👍 my compliments for all your very helpful content you are one of my favorite channels. my receiver has only Dolby True HD support and selecting the Windows audio to 7.1 it works great in True HD Rew signals. i see there is even spatial audio selectable in windows .. even with that turned ON you don't get Atmos in REW ? will it be downmixed to True HD or what is the problem? thank you so much .
Thanks for the kind words and glad my videos have been able to help you out. As for TrueHD and Atmos support, basically when those are selected they are "encoding" PCM as TrueHD or Atmos, so you're essentially getting the exact same sound as if you had selected your output as 5.1 or 7.1 PCM in Windows. REW can't output object-based sound data, so doing a measurement sweep of your overhead height channels isn't possible using the sweep patterns within REW as those are limited to standard 7.1 channels. Some folks have kind of "hacked" this and just plugged their height speakers into their surround channels. It's a bit cumbersome and time consuming and doesn't need to be done when you load in a sweep file into REW when measuring (I'll be doing a video on this as well).
@@HomeTheaterGamer fantastic can't wait to see new content. what do you think about the new Minidsp Flex HT device ? will you review something about that ?
I currently don't have plans to review the Flex HT, but I am working on a review of the standard miniDSP FLEX. After that, I will reach out to miniDSP to see if they're interested in having me review the FLEX HT, though I'll need to source out an 8 channel amp in order to review it. The FLEX HT does looks like a cool device for those that aren't interested in Dolby Atmos.
Hi Brad - I purchased the Umik1, the mic stand and installed rew and asio4all The problem I have when selecting asio4all under drivers - I am unable to get "High definition audio " to appear and only get "HD audio." I have a Marantz AV7706 - would you please let me what you think needds to be done co correct this - (I tried going back and forth to thr sound card and alternating between asio4all and Have as you recommended, but without success.) Thank you!
So you're measuring Output 1 that is your left main speaker. But you get a lot of level at 20 Hz. That must be caused by the subwoofer that is playing aswell. I don't see any difference between this and the Java output. Is it possible that your AVR is set to mix the low frequencies to the sub?
All measurements in this video are with the subwoofer turned on as this is a generalized basics video guide. Using ASIO4ALL instead of Java sees the biggest benefit being able to measure your surround speakers up to a 7.1 configuration, whereas Java is limited to stereo/front left and right measurements only. If you’d like to measure and see the capabilities of your speakers only without the subwoofer, turn your subwoofer off, disable the subwoofer in your receiver and set your speakers to full range and disable any crossovers.
Hello HTG, I am trying to set up REW with my Denon AVR (X-4500H) via HDMI, similar to your set up. So a little background on my laptop....it has a dedicated NVidia graphics card (RTX 2070 Super). I installed ASIO4ALL as you suggest and when I am trying to select the NVidia from the ASIO Control Panel it is not shown, at all. ASIO is not seeing the nvidia card as an option. Do you know what the issue is?
Hmmm. That’s odd. I have the same GPU in my PC (desktop version though), and have never had this issue. It always shows up as NVIDIA High Definition Audio (I think, it’s been a while and my PC isn’t hooked up due to moving). When was the last time you updated the NVIDIA driver?
@@HomeTheaterGamer I frequently check for driver updates and my GPU was updated a couple months ago. There is new one available but haven't loaded it yet. I've read that FlexASIO might work when there are driver conflicts between ASIO and REW. Do you have any other suggestions on why the sound card won't show up in the ASIO control panel? Have you used Flex ASIO?
Hey Brad thanks for all the helpful videos. Can you help me out? Having trouble with REW+ASIO. When it runs the sweeps for any of the bed layer speakers, the sound isn’t clean. There’s a crackle/distortion kind of interference. Any ideas of what it could be?
I actually just had this happen after I updated ASIO4ALL. Trying opening up the ASIO4ALL control panel (accessible through the preferences pane in REW), and then change the buffer size from 512 to 1024 or 2048 in ASIO4ALL and see if that fixes it (it did for me).
It worked!! Thank you very much. I was wondering, since ASIO does only the bed layer speakers, what if one had in ceiling or heights of any kind for Atmos, tried switching the connections of their heights or in ceiling either for example, the surround channels, running the sweep tests for the Xovers and sub blending, writing them down, switching connections back and make the written down changes to said heights or in ceilings, you think that would work?
hi slightly off topic, do you calibrate your subwoofers to 75db or 85db? Some say to calibrate to 75db and some for 85db. If LFE channel has +10db boost already, do we need to calibrate our subwoofers to 85db ? I personally calibrate my subs each to 75db, and combined subs give me 80db.
He calibrates at 75. But he has a house curve in his miniDSP so that around 80Hz it's 75dB, and around 20Hz it's 85dB. You can see this rise towards the lower Hz in his measurement of the system at the end. Im doing this also and it's awesome.
@@myhomeaudio8751 If you like that level yes. Highly personal I think. After house curve EQing in the minidsp I run the recievers built in room EQ, just for distance (delay) and level. Then I turn YPAO or Audeyssey etc off. And then boost the recievers sublevel to taste. (They do a shitty job at sublvl). Usually around 5dB boost in my theatre.
I'm curious why I followed exactly what you did but the software is missing tabs. I don't see a mic meter tab nor did I find two calibration files for the umik. Can it really be that different in only 3 months since your posting? (downloaded from original website, not beta). I'm ultimately trying to calibrate each speaker individually but getting it to see all speakers and run test tones is proven to be very challenging.
I can’t find the mic meter tab either. I was able to find the calibration files on the umik site entering my serial # then put them in a umik file on my drive. Finding it the REW software or loading it was a little more difficult. I deleted the program then reloaded and started over. Got the mic loaded and calibration file but did not get a picture like he did in the video. Still no mic meter tab.
1st time user of REW and I can say that you talk through way too fast and the latest version has different screens then what you are using. So for me it's kinda useless.
Thank you for the excellent video. I do have two question though. I am using a laptop with Realtek Audio. I enabled the input and output under Realtek Audio in the ASIO Control Panel as you instructed. After that, you said to enable the Umik-1 in the ASIO Control Panel as well. Do I enable the Umik-1 only if I have a dedicated graphics card or does this step also apply if I am using Realtek Audio as well? Also, my only options for output in preference are “Audio output with SST 1” , “Audio output with SST 2”, etc. Should I just choose the first one or did I miss something? Thank you in advance.
