How to (nearly) fully disassemble and reassemble the cleaning bin portion of the Roomba 980. If you get a lot of fuzz and fur it can be worth the time to clean out all the parts.

I couldn’t for the life of me figure out where those u-shaped pieces went and the twisting x piece. Had to take apart my roomba bc it picked up dog💩, then due to my poor organization it devolved into chaos trying to put it back together. This video was a lifesaver, thank you!!🙏🙏

Hollllly moly I have no clue how I stumbled upon this vid but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making it ! When I removed those 3 screws and the lid still wouldn't come off, it drove me nuts and then when I flipped the bin over and that grey/black plastic piece fell out, I thought ARRRGGHHHH I broke something !!!!! Then spent half an hour trying to figure out where it came form and how to fix it. Got that deep down sinking feeling that I would have to buy a whole new bin (EXPENSIVE!!!) but then I came across your VERY informative vid and well, you saved my bacon FOR REAL ! Thanks again WOW !!!

Yes, thank you for making this video! I had to remove the top part of the bin release button to get it assembled again, but everything else worked as you said.

VERY helpful! I have a 960 but I needed detail on disassembly of the guts of the bin and I suspected the 980 would be identical at this level of detail and it was. As you said, the scissor assembly is the booger and your attention to detail for that portion bailed me out. Thank you!

Thanks for the video! It helped me find the location of the screws under the sticker. Managed to just ram my screwdriver down and unscrew them right through the sticker without removing it. The scissor part is actually not that hard to get back together. Having the back of the bin facing you: 1: start with the left leg in the bottom and get the small plastic bit in place and screw in the silver screw a few turns to keep it in place. 2: Get the other scissor-leg back together if it fell out and align the spring. 3: Push down the right leg in to its grove in the bottom plastic. 4: This is the hardest part, while holding the leg down get the small plastic lock in place and get the screw going. 5: Tighten both screws. To get the top cover on easily: Flip the top cover upside down and look down at the part that needs to connect to the springy scissor part. Inside the plastic there are two square holes, inside each one are a plastic tab. Using a small flat head screwdriver gently bend the clips outward and the top "button" part and the lower part that attach to the scissor bit separate from the cover. Now it's super easy to get the bottom part on to the scissor mechanism and align and screw on the cover. When all screws are back just snap back the button-part and you are done.

What a lifesaver video when the wife wanted me to re-assembly the bin ASAP! I found it much easier to slide the spring in from the side after the partly screwing the scissor assembly in though.

Great video! Roomba made it out without a filter! So this video was perfect to get to all of the locations that now had "stuff" to get it back up and running in about 15 minutes! LOVE youtube videos for this!

Thank you very much for this video. I have the roomba 960 and its an identical bin design, with the exception of 1 screw. Took it apart due to dog poop and couldn't figure out how to get this part back together. Thanks again!

Thank you!! I’ve been wondering why my Roomba 870 dies bit suck up the dirt in the bin. It just goes into the housing if the robot. I’m going to try to clean it really well to see if it fixes it.

Is there any reason why the spring can’t be glued down? That whole area is so aggravating.

The button to release the bin separates in two pieces, you don´t need all that gymnastics to get reassemble the scissors part

I’m having a hard time getting the bin cover back onto the scissor piece. In the video that part is speeded up so I have no idea how to get that back on. Does anyone have any suggestions?

any one know how to fix error 8? my i980 runs a short distance and stops. bin is clean as far as I see. motor at least runs. no ideas what is wrong

Not sure, haven't had that particular error. Whenever my older Roomba does the whole start and quick stop, there is something wrapped around a wheel.

And why make it so difficult? I put it in the water jet and it is clean.

9 out of 10 times you do not need to remove any screws to resolve the error 8 problem, First thing to try is to open the door and remove the filter. At the end of the door where it is hinged you can see the top of the motor. Take a regular vac with a crevice attachment and get it in sideways and suck out what is caught in the motor. when you pull the crevice attachment away and look quick you will likely see the fan blade still turning. and while you have the vac out clean the filter -- reassemble and you should be back in business - - Good luck -- Jon

Jon, thank you so much for mentioning this- I was able to fix my error 8 by using a small vacuum attachment to clean the fan without having to remove any screws! 😁

DO NOT take apart the scissor spring unless you want to throw the whole thing away and buy a new one. It's not necessary, just clean around it and it's almost impossible to put back together. Jen gives good advice overall, but taking apart the scissor spring will likely be a big mistake.
