Back when humor served a harmlessly benevolent purpose, something that's vanished from the humorless brand of politics practiced in this country today, much to our detriment. This was one of FDR's greatest moments of practicing the sadly lost art.

This man had one foot in the grave by that point, from his long-run health issues to the stresses of leading a global war effort to save humanity from fascism. And yet he still had the wit and charisma to get people rolling like this.

His “New Deal” was a disaster. It lengthened and deepened the depression, and resulted in the 2nd worst stock market crash in history in 1937. In 1939, after 6 years of New Deal “success”, FDR’s treasury secretary Henry Morganthau, Jr. said: “We have tried spending money. We are spending more money than we have ever spent before and it does not work. … I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job, I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises. … I say after eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started and an enormous debt to boot!” The mythology surrounding FDR as America’s rescuer from the Great Depression is one of the reasons for the fiscal mess we are in today. Oh, and his weakness at Yalta condemned Eastern Europe to 45 years of slavery and misery. But then again, that’s what Demonunists would consider “success.”

@@carspivshould probably mention the recession was also caused by tax increases and spending cuts to the WPA leading to unemployment and a knock on effect, and the treasury and fed policys were devoid of roosevelts action. All of this was to cut aggregate demand out of a worry that if demand outpaces supply the economy could be put into hyper inflation causing smth worse. Also roosevelt is not a communist he openly admits hes a capitalist.

@@alexhennigh5242 Probably, I’d say. I don’t think it’s impossible that there’ll be a revival of New Deal-style politics from Dems, though. The party wants to obtain and maintain power, it’s constituency is way more progressive than its congresspeople currently are and they won’t be able to run on simply not being Republicans forever. Edit: I recommend reading the book FDR and His Enemies. Really great book about the Nee Deal Years told through his relationships with his political enemies. It’s given me a lot of insight not just into American history but also contemporary politics.

The phrase "Roosevelt turns his dog on Dewey (1944)" does not refer to an actual event. It might be a humorous or satirical way of describing the 1944 presidential election campaign between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Thomas E. Dewey. In the 1944 election, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the incumbent President and a Democrat, ran for his fourth term in office. Thomas E. Dewey, the Governor of New York and a Republican, was his opponent. However, there is no record or historical event of Roosevelt using his dog or any other means to attack Dewey during the campaign. If you have a specific context or reference related to this phrase that you'd like to explore further, please provide more details, and I'll do my best to assist you.
