It never fails, every time we get chicks, we always end up with some roosters, even though we bought pullets.
@amclamb9543
@amclamb9543 4 года назад
That happened to us last year at Tractor Supply. We bought Red Sex Links that can be sexed at hatch by color. Light colored are roosters, caramels are hens. Well, they were all caramel colored day old chicks. But at a week old I noticed when I put my hand in to change out their water or food all the chicks would scurry in fright except for one. That would run up to investigate what I was doing. I knew right then it was a rooster. I was right. From then on he got braver and would try to attack my hand every time I tried to change out water or food and that was only when they were just weeks old. They’re now a year old and he's the meanest dang rooster we've ever had!! He attacks us when we go in to feed them or gather eggs. We have to go in with an umbrella now to fend him off. Incubating eggs now and his butt is history. He's ginormous, strong and breaking down our 10 hens with his weight so we've separated him now. Can't wait to get rid of this evil rooster! We've had chickens for years and never had one so darn mean. Update: We did get rid of him. I tell ya, he won’t be attacking anyone else. I’ve never in all my life had a demonic rooster until we had him. He was just evil. We didn’t even want have any offspring from him because we’ve heard many people say that it can be something in their bloodline. It was so mean we had to put shoe strings on his feet and tie his feet together to help prevent him from jumping up and flogging us. He could still walk since we left enough room for him to move his feet freely and we cut off his freakin 3” daggers too! But he would still jump up so we still had to go in with an umbrella to gather eggs so we put him back in a separate pen until we got rid of his demonic butt! Sad because he was a stunningly beautiful rooster to see. He was huge and just absolutely gorgeous.

Great video! Thank you for addressing this. I especially appreciate the "crowing hen" topic. I thought I was the only one who had a hen that crowed...lol. She was given to me, she's older and bigger than my other hens. Even her behavior is a bit different, she sits higher than the others. Now I won't think that she has an ugly voice or that she's a weirdo. She does lay beautiful x-large eggs. We are blessed to have her and the rest of the flock is too. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks so much for sharing. Reno, Nevada.

Another way I can always tell early on is by behavior. Even as early as a week old many roosters will run toward your hand as you go to change our the water or food in the brooder. Unlike the hens who typically scurry in fright to the other side of the brooder. If any tend to run away but then run back up to your hand in curiosity or even jumps at your hand as to flog it, it's a rooster! Mine started doing that at just a few days old and now he just turned 1 and he's the meanest rooster we've ever had! We're hatching eggs in the incubator and he's history.

@Tara-id3rk
@Tara-id3rk 4 года назад
Oh no!! I ordered all pullets and have two chicks I’m not so sure about, who run right up to my hand and investigate. Definitely not as weary as the other chicks. I cannot have roosters where I live so I was hoping this wasn’t the case. But I also have a brood of meat chicks, so they may end up in that brooder :( sad! One is a beautiful Black Copper Maran chick and I was hoping it was female. I guess we shall see. All the others are supposed to be red sex link. And the one that may be a roo has a red tipped beak unlike the others. But a couple of the “female” red sex links I was sent are yellow. So I’m not so sure about this brood.

I am on the fence about one of mine. They are about 11 weeks. Out of 4, I believe I have 3 roosters. However, that is because one of them that still looks like a hen to me is crowing and loudly. He/she is bullied by a definite rooster, but she is a bit bigger than him. I am just learning about these guys , new to this since Mid April. I have 2 Rocks, a Maran and a Leghorn, the most dominant of the bunch by a mile! It gives me hope to think she might still be a she, because I live in a region that does not allow roosters! I found someone to take them and they are coming tomorrow.

I'm terribly sad. I just found this video after much searching and we'll, I'm glad I did. I just had to dispatch a cockerel. 5 weeks old. I have one more to do tomorrow. They have been fighting and I had to separate them because one was bloody. I brought it home put him in a brooder and dressed his wounds. I don't have enough hens for 3 roosters so these 2 have to go. I've had this problem once before and I let them go until they were 6 months old and regret it. I should have put them down long before that but I just wasn't sure at first. I'm still new to this, only 3 years in and learning as I go along. Thanks for the video. Trying not to feel bad.

My question is how long should You leave them in the brooder with heat lamp? Since it is cold now in November past Thanksgiving they ate a little over 3 weeks old and are starting to get features, when would it be safe to put them with the rest of our hens and two roostes? Excellent video! I'm glad you mentioned androgenous chickens and crowing hens. If you have a flock of one breed it's easier to tell the difference between cockerels and pullets but if you have mixed breed chickens it gets a lot harder. I had a rooster named Rose because he was thought to be a hen until he was about 6 months old he was 1/4 dark Cornish Game and had a small walnut comb and small wattles. Also had a hen that crowed. As you pointed out it was a very specific circumstance. She was top of the pecking order of the hens and we were temporarily without an adult rooster. A young cockerel made some advances towards her and she was having none of that she beat him up chased him off and crowed!
