Rooster Talk - What We've Learned About Roosters 

My subordinate rooster is my house pet. He roams the yard at a distance from his family but when he was younger he was really serious about roosting in the house, so I let him. He has a little roost in my guest room. And I put paper down every night for poop. He waits by the backdoor at eveningtime. We let him in. He strolls over to the dogs bed and humps it a couple of times then jumps up to sleep. I have an ostrich feather duster up there for him to sleep with. He is a little persnickety to my husband but that is rare. He’s my buddy.

Who doesn't have chickens is missing the fun of the whole experience they are very entertaining.

I like your video thank you. I have a Wyandot Rooster and a Bantam Rooster in my flock and they co-habit without issue, they eat together. I got them from a school. The boys share the flock. Yes the little bantam has no issues with the ladies 😂🤣

Hi. I love your green pasture area and your chickens look gorgeous. I know that we can tame mean roosters by holding and petting them ar least 3 times a week. As they react protectively when a human comes into their run or pen, they attack, but if they get confident enough, they will change their attitude. Greetings.

Haha I have a total jerk rooster but he's little so I just laugh at him. My laughter hasn't helped. HAHAHA

Over this fall/winter, two really pretty roosters just randomly started showing up in my yard to eat seeds! I’ve been regularly giving them a scoop every day and now they’ve formed a sort of bond with me lol. They do what I think is happy clucking and purring sounds when I go outside. They even follow me from a distance! I’ve yet to be able to pet them or get too close, but they’re really chill for roosters! I named them Bert and Ernie because they’re always together 😂

I have 6 roosters. I have separate yards for each. We added 700 square feet to the coup. We are getting pullets for each. We eat a lot of eggs.

I found my rooster Midi used to always peck at my feet and bite me, but he did it to be held (not to say this is always the case). All my roosters are lovely and kind, they love cuddles and no longer run up and peck me. They are silkies and quite little, so less intimidating and I think, safer? Not sure. Midi is amazing, and I wouldn’t trade him for the world 💗

Just found out one of my pullets is developing spurs, and crowed the first time yesterday. He is more skittish than the hen that came with him, but he does come up to me with her. Sometimes I can pick him up, but the girl is definitely more happy to be picked up. The boy tends to flap a little more. So for the record, I tried the wing identification in the chick stage and I guess I was wrong lol

I have been around chickens my whole life. My great grandpa had a poultry farm. And all our family has chickens. I have NEVER seen roosters "fight to the death". Just like any flock, they will fight, and find their place. They are all individuals, so sometimes they will even work it out, and you can have two roosters, as long as one is willing to submit to the "loss" of dominance. Which is all the fight is. They will challenge each other, but usually will abide by the rules of the challenge. The reason the roosters "fight to the death" in a chicken fight, the ILLEGAL ONES, is because the roosters do not know each other, and are FORCED TOGETHER! they are in rings, and cannot escape. In a challenge for dominance, once one has "lost", it will "retreat". ANd the winner WILL LET HIM RETREAT! I have wittnessed this so many times over my life time. Right now, because of circumstance, I am down to 3 hens and two roosters. The two roosters are BEST FRIENDS! Now King, is KING! But Jackson is his right hand man! We have a hawk around here. YOu should see the two work TOGETHER to protect the flock and each other! IT IS AMAZING! and in the morning, King eats first, but he waits for Jackson, before they leave their coop yard! They rely on each other! and throughout the day, you can watch them take turns "standing watch"!!! One eats, while one watches! Then they switch! I cant imagine ever not having a rooster. I am hatching out 24 eggs right now! Jackson has EARNED his own flock! I wonder if they will split into two, or if they will just be one huge flock! I am excited to watch it play out!

The bantam chickens are my most aggressive ones i have. Small but hearty.

LOL yes, I only have bantam roosters and they...um... "surf" on the big ladies HAHAHAHA

Good Stuff. I've been spurred by a rooster before. He jumped on my leg and sunk his spurs, one on each side, in my calf. Needless to say, but it did not end well for that rooster, or me for that matter. My leg bled profusely and I had to get antibiotic shots from the doctor.

Love your knowledge about rooters,o have been keeping hens since my childhood ,and every point you made is bang on money, One thing you missed is head rooster won't even allow other and subordinate rooster to do cuckle-doodle-doo

Hello Stacie, I found this very interesting and informative. I had put my roosters in a separate area. They did great for the most part. Then one day the brothers were fighting so I kept the less dominant rooster with the hens and the others went to freezer camp. I kept the rooster for a long time. I eventually sent him to my brothers house because he was wearing out my girls backs. I think I have a bantum rooster. Still to young to tell. I hope he is nice and easy on the girls. I hope to keep him. 💕 NonnaGrace

We only keep one rooster per flock and in separate coops. but we don't hatch eggs here either. this year we had several roosters and sold all the extras.

Haha no worries I get attached to my bois too sometimes a little more than girls. At least with my first rooster he was the best our second is also really good but he only tolerates people and would prefer to stay to himself.

I have a rooster that is the sweetest boy. He’s not going, I rescued him from a property that was being sub developed along with some of his wives. He’s such a pushover though, he allows the hens to bully him. We have chicks and I am concerned that the cockerels might out rank him and kick him out as you described. He’s the sweetest lovely boy. I hope I can find a way to restore some order in the flock

I have 3 roos. One Barred Plymouth rock, 2 reds. The reds I had since chicks. The Plymouth is a new addition, introduced as an adult. They where aggro at first, but the Plymouth is twice the size of the reds. They rarely have issues anymore. Although the Plymouth did attack a child recently. I told her not to chase the chickens! Admittedly I gave him a soccer style boot in the heat of them moment. Made my little niece bleed and I lost it. But he and I have made amends. I'm sure he understands, as he would sacrifice himself for his hens.

yes , roosters will definitely attack people and they can hurt and draw blood. how old should a regular chicken be to be a good fryer? I never really did know, my wife wants to wait a long time and by then they are as tough as a boot if we try to fry it.

We had a mean rooster that would even chase the car and peck at the tires when I was A kid. 30 years later I got chickens and haven't had a single mean one yet. I believe for the most part people ignore the early challenges that lead to aggressive behavior. The head of the flock does not let another rooster mount the hens near him. It is a challenge to the head roo and left unchecked the lower roo will see him as a poor flock leader. By simply giving them a light punt to make them get off a hen. I have yet to have a mean one and they actually take the hens behind a bush or something to do the dead and come running back 20 sec later 😂😂

I have some type of MASSIVE rooster, and he's been around for a good while.. But he runs stray dogs off and I when caught him setting off security lights while fighting a possum. Hes mean to anything with a pulse, except me. He hangs out all day and night in my shop while I'm outside. He's like a lapdog.. anyone else shows up and I have to put him in his house..

Mean roosters are the best reason to keep chickens. Putting them lower in the pecking order is as easy as putting on a hat. There's no excuse to not keep them.

Have any of you baby sat a flock? I currently am and I’ve never been around free range chickens, let’s just say her rooster is displeased with me, I want him to like me and I’m following her instructions but her rooster keeps trying to ambush me, please help🥺
