I have a hen and it appeared she wasn’t going to be a good mum so I put her chick along with her eggs in my incubator. But it turned out she was a great mum and I put that chick back and then a few days later a couple more chicks. Then a few days later another 2…all is going very well. The oldest chick is now 20 days old and I have 2 more chicks that have hatched in the last 2-3 days in the incubator…is it way too risky to try putting them under her. Even possibly putting them under her and letting them be with her briefly to get used to it and putting back in the brooder during the day and bit by bit…get them used to each other?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 20 дней назад
I’m not sure. I’ve never tried with that big of a difference. It will totally depend on the hen. It seems like they would need to be with the hen all the time though or they won’t know to follow her. I, personally, wouldn’t risk it, but keep a close eye if you do try.

Nice video. I want to share something I just learned and tried with success. I was told not to move my broody till she had chicks under her. I tried this all night by securing her away from other hens. Then in the morning once she had bounded with them I was able to move her successfully. ( note : she adopted 4 chicks at 1.5 week broody) I moved her with 1 egg which seemed to remind her what she was supposed to be doing. ❤🐓 they are all different. This may help someone.
@ChickenHues

Thank you for sharing that! It is WAY easier to move her with chicks. She will willingly go wherever they are. True!

Just found out one of my pullets is developing spurs, and crowed the first time yesterday. He is more skittish than the hen that came with him, but he does come up to me with her. Sometimes I can pick him up, but the girl is definitely more happy to be picked up. The boy tends to flap a little more. So for the record, I tried the wing identification in the chick stage and I guess I was wrong lol

I'm incubating my first eggs and today is my first candling. Are there any serious consequences if I "misdiagnose" an egg as a good one and leave it in? If I'm not sure, could I do another candling prior to the next one that you're supposed to do around day 18 (I think)?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 2 месяца назад
It could explode if it’s bad. I almost Always leave them in until I’m sure. Unless you smell a bad smell or the eggs are really dirty , it should be fine to wait.

I have broody hen on a nest in my brooder in my house. The temperature outside is just too hot for her to be in the coop all day. This way I can keep an eye on her and let out when she wants out. I do have a small coop to transition her and babies to before they move to the big coop. But I'm still not sure how all that's going to work. I've never let a hen be broody before. I've always raised the chicks. Like does momma and chicks stay in brooder for a week then mini coop for a week then free range with the flock? Or does mom go back with the flock and babies stay in mini coop. They are due to hatch July 14th. I'm kinda nerve.
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 2 месяца назад
Hi! It is nerve-racking! lol I’ve done different ways… I’ve kept the hen and chicks confined in their own pen . I’ve also let hens hatch in the main coop and never separate. A lot depends on your flock and the available space. I do always keep the hen and chicks confined within the flock for at least two days before turning them loose. The hen will protect her chicks so mine have always done just fine within the main flock. But we have a lot of space. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

I’ve been looking for a channel that vids using their canned meats . I’ve canned chkn legs and thighs, not breast because I was afraid it would come out stringy. That’s why I’m looking for home canned meat recipes, tried and tested for goodness. I’ve canned venison, pork, chkn and hamburger. I’m going to use some of my chkn meat for tamales. So I’ll can up some breasts for that. Then when I’m ready in the cooler days I’ll make tamales. I’m canning pork butt when it’s on sale for my pork tamales also. My kitchen is my play pen.

@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 3 месяца назад
They can get down just fine and don’t get hurt. Chicks are pretty flexible and resilient. The issue is that it often takes them about a week to understand how to get back up. Mine usually need to be manually captured and “walked” up the ramp the first days. 😂
