Marten Root is a superb traverso player, particularly with J.S. Bach. He reminds me of a baroque flute player who played with Musica Antiqua Koln in the late 70s through the mid-80s. I last heard a traverso player of his caliber play in a Musica Antiqua Koln performance of Bach's "A Musical Offering" in the early 80s. That, of course, was of an earlier generation of traverso players. I cannot find the flutist's name among Antiqua documentation on the web, though I found a photo of him in one of the ensembles of that time. Their performance of Bach's masterwork can be found on youtube, although the video resolution is poor (but the audio is good).

The flutist Root quotes is Quantz, in case anyone was wondering.

Yeah, the quotation about the alto sound ideal is by Quantz.

Whoa. His support drops drastically at the end of notes, making the pitch even flatter than it already is. Yikes.

It must be difficult to be in tune with other instruments.

Yep. One has to adjust to keep the note in tune at different volumes. If you just slack the air, it sounds like in the video. Root definitely knows how to do it right. This was probably intentional.

The pitch doesn't change (at least on the last flute, the one he's obviously been practising on), the lower harmonics fall away giving the impression of the sound 'hollowing', and he does this because he - like many great instrumentalists - seeks to give the impression of a 'voice' rather than just an instrument. Definitely we hear some pitch change in the italian instrument but I think that's because he's still in the 400hz mode. Sound that remains the same until the end is, in essence, unnatural, so I think he tries to avoid this. His whole philosophy towards flute playing is fascinating actually, and you hear it in his other work.

Playing a woodwind is not like playing a mechanic like organ or harpsichord. Congratulations you just heard the nature of a flute instrument.
