I know this is a year old, but I appreciate the way you go through the processes and identify the common mistakes someone like myself makes. Thank you for posting this guide!

Hi Deborah and thanks for stopping by my channel for this video! You are most welcome, I love sharing knowledge and experience with other gardeners and learning from them as well. Currently propagating roses in our hydroponics greenhouse and they are doing exceptionally well.

Good morning brother Steve and blessings to you and yours on this day 🙏🏾 Yes give it a try, patience is key, and be sure to use just plain clean sand, you can get at any garden center. You should have no issues rooting your cuttings if you use the tips from this video.

I am definitely going to try rooting some of my cuttings in sand. You had me at “ peat moss and all that crap.” I really hope it works!

Hey Brett, thanks! I’m hoping that at least half of them successfully root, roses can take a month or more to root using this method but it’s the most maintenance free method for me here at the nursery.

We have a such a short time in the spring that this works. I use to do this all the time in The 80s....but for some reason cant get past them molding and fungus...

Greetings Sislertx and thanks for watching. Do you use plain sand to root your cuttings in? If so, you should have no issues with mold and or fungus. Clean sand contains virtually none of the organic material that usually leads to mold and fungus forming on cuttings during the propagation process, but like peat moss, potting soil, ground soil, ect does contain those things.

you can also sanitize the sand with boiling water before hand@@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel

Although we haven’t posted an update on this video, we successfully rooted about 97% of these cuttings and sold them in our nursery about 3 months after this video and have successfully rooted more than 300 of them since that time.

Great presentation. Can you use vermiculite instead of sand? Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

Greetings and yes, you can absolutely use it instead of sand as long as it is sterile. Be sure to keep it moist during the propagation process.

I've had success with knock out roses, but not at a high rate. I will try this method and see if it ups my rate. I would love to see if you have a method of starting Wax Myrtle. I have never been successful with them.
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Try using this method with the wax myrtle as well but use hardwood cuttings with newly formed but not yet opened growth nodes and remove all other foliage from the cuttings. Be sure to cover but remove cover for a few minutes a couple times each day to allow ventilation.

Oh man, I really tried this rooting technique so many times but it did work. I live in a hot area, maybe that is the problem. They say, the best technique in this case is the air layer rooting technique.
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Greetings H. Torres and thanks for watching this video. I don’t think that heat is the issue my friend, it gets extra hot here during the late spring to late fall months and I have rooted rose cuttings during every season. First start with healthy, viable cuttings that have been taken at the right time and from the right locations on the rose bush. Regardless to season, the best time to take rose cuttings is right after the blossom has nearly dried out,, and the best location to take the cuttings from is along the stem just below the dried blossom. Be sure to take cuttings that are at least 6” long and bury at least half of the cutting in sterile sand and keep sand moist at all times during the rooting process, also cover cuttings to with clear plastic conserve moisture but be sure to remove plastic for a few minutes each day to allow air exchange, cuttings should root in 14-21 days.
