So what you've created in your workspace is a scaled down version of traditional lines manufacturing back in the days of sail, only to satisfy your needs in supplying you with proper rigging. That's brilliant. What a great solution to an enormous obstacle.

My gosh, I have been to Mystic Seaport many times. When I was in school I read a book about the Charles W. Morgan. I never thought back then that I would actually set foot on the real ship. Back in the late 70's and early 80's the Morgan was refitted and I was able to watch the progress over several years. One of the guides, a Mr. Willet got to know my wife and me very well and when we would visit he would give us great detail on the work that had been done since our last visit. His personally guided tours were the best. This video brought back some great memories.

As I noticed you use top tier tools for your models, I want to recommend investing in a good cordless screwdriver for drilling and fastening. It makes work so much easier and faster, and I'm sure you will find it very useful for all your workshop projects. I would suggest a Festool T18 with 2,6 ah batteries for lightness and durability but Makita and Dewalt also have some decent products.

Are there categories for different sized threads? By that I mean do the lower sails require heavier ropes than the topsails? Is cotton thread better than poly thread? Your videos are superb and the lessons they teach are the best. I've already learned a lot from watching all these videos and I still have many more to go. Pete
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 11 месяцев назад
Of course, the biger the load (the larger the area of the sail), the larger the diameter of the rope. I used cotton ropes on my first model and the last one. I prefer 100% polyester thread for rope making. They do not react to changes in humidity, as cotton threads do. The most important thing is that they are not "hairy", and cotton gets hairier every year...

Hi Olga, first off all thanks for your amazing videos. A splendid source for modelship makers like me. I have a question: On original ships the rope for the shrouds and standing rigging were cooked in tar to make them more durable. This gave these ropes a dark brown/green dull (not shiny!) look, which is what I want for my Sovereign of the Seas, but I just can't figure out how to do that. Do you have an advice or trick how to accomplish that? I would be very grateful.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 3 года назад
Thank you very much! I am really happy that you like my work! If you want to get the most natural color - you can paint a light rigging in brown. I painted with bitumen varnish diluted with turpentine or real tar (but it's hard to find) is also diluted with turpentine... I painted the rigging on the Bounty: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yPNciJznNck.html

@@OlhaBatchvarov Thanks for your reply Olga. Bitumen varnish is indeed hard to get. However I found out that in the Netherlands they sell high quality liquid waterbased paint in pretty much all the colours so I/m free to experiment to get the color by mixing colours and steeping the ropes. That should do the job also. For your interest, their website (also in English): www.royaltalens.com/en/products/ecoline/bottles/?productCode=1125P

@@janspeyer5887 Jan, when I do rigging I use white cotton thread then stain it to the color I need. Every country has something different but I use gunze paints thinned 90/10 or inks for panel lining if I am doing a generic color I already have. Then I go over them with powder for highlight and the slight texture. Tamiya weather sets or similar or artist chalk. the powder will give it the flat look. A very thing spray of flat matt seals it all and still stays flexible. Sometimes you will be lucky and find that perfect thread and color combo and just grab it. making these look old and used, is I find a little harder as making the wash for them is a little more time consuming. @Olha Batchvarov Cool design. wonderful work. thank you.

Being a model railroader primarily, I was looking at it thinking it could be built using a model locomotive motor and controlled with a tethered speed controller used in the hobby. A section of track from one of the larger scales could be used as the guideway, and a railcar truck could form the base of the, well, truck! Very neat device she has there!
@TheEmeraldMenOfficial
@TheEmeraldMenOfficial Год назад
@@tomt9543’d use Lego Technic, with a 3D-printed drawing plate for the truck. The drive motor would be one of the really old 9V train motors with the big black and yellow control panel, so I could change the speed, and I’d likely provide a bit of tension on the truck by linking it to the afterturn machine with a weighted pulley: that way it coils a bit tighter.

Do you ever use beeswax on your rigging lines?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Год назад
It is not needed at all for polyester threads. But I didn't use it for cotton ropes either - I prefer a lighter. Because after waxing, you can't glue this rope and dust sticks to it very quickly. Therefore, the rope becomes even more "hairy" right on the model and you can't do anything about it!

Can you supply rope for models 1/64 scale all sizes ? Please let me know as the rope I have now is not of the quality that you have.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 3 года назад
Technically - I can, but practically ... I do not make a rope for sale because it is a very slow process and expensive. I still did not find an analogue of German Guterman threads here. There are many similar, but thin, as Guterman E121 - No. I do not know when I can go and buy a new batch of material for ropes... If I count all these expenses (including tickets to Europe), it turns out to be an unrealistic high cost!

@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 4 года назад

Например я нашел такие нити - Gütermann E 121 No.160 Thread for 23000 Meters, такие подойдут?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 3 года назад
No. 240 или No.160 ето диаметр.
