Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Reprise: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still playable enough. Alternatively, a Reprise may fail to address the original's salient issues or neglect to add anything substantial. Formerly called the "Re-Meh" score.
3- Remaster: An improvement overall, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own the original. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original. Rereleases with this score often don't reach their fullest potential or otherwise lack something meaningful you can only get in the original.
4- Remake: A strong rerelease that fixes salient issues, updates the visuals/music, and maybe adds new content. However, there may be a few blemishes left untouched or other neglected opportunities to improve.
5- Replace: A rerelease that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it stands heads and shoulders above the original version. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of worthwhile new content as applicable.

Treasure trove Cove, Freezezy Peak, Mad monster mansion, and Click Clock wood that really stand out for me. Clanker's Cavern, Bubblegloop Swamp I don't really like, and Isle o Hags imo is better than Grunty's lair simply by virtue of not having the bullshit one goes through from MMM to RBB. I feel like not being able to split/swap anywhere was probably a platform limitation: having to remember where the other character is, render them when you walk by... not to mention that the pads are very carefully placed where enemies and other stage elements will never interact with the idle character.

@LilJbm1
@LilJbm1 4 года назад
@@lpfan4491 Yeah I totally agree with Joe's point. Was thinking the same thing throughout the review and consistently disagreed with his criticism on that. It just was not possible for them to listen to his literally UNREASONABLE demand that you be able to split anywhere, and even for the remake that criticism is still unreasonable and illegitimate. He admitted it himself in the video when he stated splitting anywhere would require total rework and redesign of all the levels to accommodate the massive game mechanic shift. Asking for that "little mechanic change" would necessitate changing all the levels of Tooie to the point that it isn't the same game anymore, and at that point you should just be making a new game instead of a remake. Really hated that point he kept making because it was so stupid. I get why he wanted that, but hated how he acted like it was the Dev's fault for not being able to work it in.

@@LilJbm1 I don't get why he's hating on the feature so much. I mean, for fucks sake, it was the MAIN SELLING POINT of the game. It's front and center in the commercials. Getting mad because you can't split up anywhere just comes off as childish. He's criticizing the game for not being what he wanted it to be, rather than on it's own merits alone, on top of the N64's limitations. It's like you said, allowing you split anywhere would require so much reworking that it'd be a completely different game by the time they were done.
@Kinkajou1015
@Kinkajou1015 4 года назад
@@WhiplashPuppet It's front and center on the logo too. Notice how Banjo has bear paw prints and Tooie has bird talon prints. It's a major point of the game for sure. Many complained back in 1999 and 2000 about how they wanted Bear and Bird to be able to do things on their own. Rare granted the wish. What got me more is how he kept complaining it wasn't on L. But newsflash, the standard controller for the N64, L wouldn't be used unless you were playing with D pad. I get he has that nice controller where everything is reachable, but myself and I bet most people used the tri grip controller. Requiring the players to change their grip during gameplay is bad game design.

Dragon Kazooie has another benefit you know... unlimited Fire Eggs. Granted, they remain mostly situational compared to normal ones, but they do a bit more damage by default.
@msgameandcake628
@msgameandcake628 4 года назад
I mean, they are tied with Ice Eggs for the best DPS at 4 damage per volley. 2 Fire Eggs at a time, 2 damage each, compared to 3 Blue Eggs at a time 1 damage each and 1 Grenade Egg at a time 3 damage each. They're used for a decent number of puzzles, and can even make Weldar explode just as well as Grenade Eggs. Heck, just having an infinite supply of ANY egg type helps a good deal during the FPS sections, makes it so the only times you'll ever need to restock eggs is if you needed them for puzzle solving.

Oh, as for the last Canary Mary race, for some reason, at Rare, they didn't realize how horrible the rubberbanding AI was. So you had to actually purposely go slow for most of the race, only to overtake her at the very end. I only found out about this when I replayed Tooie recently. I never knew WHY that race was so ridiculously hard as a kid.

I prefer Tooie. I'm not trying to argue with anyone, this is just my opinion. I prefer Tooie's larger and interconnected worlds. That made the world feel more organic and natural. I liked that your notes didn't reset in Tooie. I liked the more varied gameplay and more differing level themes. Kazooie was pretty Nintendo standard with level theme. Tooie has some of that too, but they're more varied and have more specific, or more fleshed out, versions of a theme. I also feel that Kazooie's item placement detracted from the games. It felt less like an adventure and more like the devs were guiding you through a level. Like they were holding your hand, not letting you truly explore and discover things on your own. I also really like Tooie's darker themes.

I think it's unfair to blame 4J Studios for not "fixing" design problems with the original game. Presumably this was an outsourced remaster. It's probable that they didn't have the budget for a carte blanche approach. The project scope was probably defined by the publisher.

It's much better than how Kazooie did it imo. You actually saw firsthand how Grunt and her sisters straight up ruined your home. Being able to split off whenever would have shattered the game's puzzles. You could just fly somewhere, split up, and then do whatever you wanted the individual member to do. Rather than wondering "how do I get solo Banjo there". You might argue it's not good design, but as Tooie is right now it wouldn't work. And it's not fair to knock the remake for not changing that when it would've completely changed the way the game plays. I didn't find Canary Mary so bad once I realized how her rubber banding worked - hovering behind her doesn't take much mashing at all, then boosting out at the end isn't bad either; I'm not saying it's well designed, but finding that out made beating her so much more comfortable and consistent And about Klungo, be uses his 3 potions in a different order depending on which save file you're playing Also funny enough, in one of my really old concepts for a Banjo-Threeie, I had Kazooie wield his wand (similar to the wrench in Nuts & Bolts, but I made this idea first uwu) after he gets kidnapped; you would collect Mumbo Tokens and spend them to activate Mumbo Pads as in Tooie, but you wouldn't need to switch characters for it

At 25:43 it’s mentioned that Dragon Kazooie’s Fire Breath is too short ranged and later it’s mentioned that the Homing Eggs are the only worthwhile unlockable. However, Dragon Kazooie actually grants you infinite Fire Eggs - a lot of people don’t tend to notice that and I don’t believe Humba Wumba tells you (I could be wrong). At 42:59 it’s mentioned that the Bee can boost in Tooie, but this was also possible in Kazooie. Again, Mumbo never mentions this to you. Also fun fact: You can cheese THREE of the boss fights in Tooie: • To the left of the entrances to Targitzan’s Slightly Sacred Chamber & Really Sacred Chamber, there’s a nest of Gold Eggs, granting you infinite Eggs for 60 seconds • Old King Coal takes more substantially more damage from Ice Eggs than any of the other Eggs • You can fight Lord Woo Fak Fak as the submarine, giving you infinite ammunition Absolutely loved both of these videos though! Many, many valid points here that a lot of people don’t tend to acknowledge hahaha

Tooie is like those old point and click adventure games where you need to get through a locked door, so you look for a key, only to find out hours later that you were supposed to go out to the farm and steal a rooster and use it to wake up the janitor's pet lizard so that it will eat the flies in the room so you can get through the passage without the flies blocking you. Then you go through the passage and find a barrel with a green liquid in it, which you have to collect in your goblet (you got the goblet, didn't you?) and then go all the way back to the entrance and give it to the knight. After he drinks the green liquid, he'll open the door for your with his key. Duh, how else would you open a door?

Tooie has a lot of problems, but I love the insane ambitions that it has. Like you mentioned, most of its attempts at pushing the series forward fall a bit short, but the interconnected world adds so much to the atmosphere of the game in a way that makes me enjoy it even more than Kazooie. For first time players though, I do recommend playing alongside a guide to cut out time trying to figure out how to get Jiggies that require later moves. It made my first playthrough way more fun than it would have been otherwise (even though a game shouldn’t require a guide to be fun)

Tooie was also a lot of fun, and I think people exaggerate a bit on the critiques. It really isn't unfair to get all required jiggies. They also make the worlds feel more interconnected. That being said, getting all the jiggies can be boring because of some very dumb ones, and moving from a to b can feel sluggish and slow. Also, most of the boss fights can feel pretty easy (aside from a few of them). And also, Canary Mary sucks. Watched a lot of your videos, disagree with you the most here, still this is what earned the sub lol. Very well thought out. I love Banjo-Tooie. For me, I'm a big fan of open world RPG's with lots of backtracking and returning to locations so the collectathon-metroidvania mashup that Tooie is scratches just about every one of my itches. But I can see now more than ever how it strays so far away from what a majority of collectathon games are like. Even DK64 limits the backtracking to the first few levels where you dont have certain kongs yet. Great analysis, even if I totally disagree and will clutch tooie tightly to my chest to the grave!!

I noticed one major problem in your annoyance with Banjo-Tooie. You keep seeing it as "just a collect-a-thon". But have you ever thought it was trying to be more than just a collect-a-thon? You're trying to review it as just one thing and it has to achieve what a collect-a-thon should, when it's more than just that and achieves alot of other things you have yet to mention. That's why when you make comparisons to Zelda, they dont come off as positive because that's not what you want out of Banjo Tooie. But that's what makes Banjo Tooie amazing. It feels like a real lived in world. Or at least a world that isnt an excuse to fill time. A more appropriate comparison would be Mario 64. In which you do have to backtrack sometimes after obtaining special caps. You think of "back and forth" because you only thinking in terms of linear. And banjo-tooie is everything but linear.You can explore and progress as much as you want. And I personally LOVE backtracking if it means I get to see old worlds and enjoy them all over. I personally HATE doing everything in a single world on the first or second go and never go back to it again. Sure Yooka-Laylee did it almost better. But also sacrificed immersion and lived in worlds. They have the themes but each area doesnt feel lived in or remarkably special from the last. You complained about Mumbo and Humba Wumba for being two separate mechanics rather than being two separate characters with their own story. I like Wumba and I like mumbo. I dont like seeing both too much and they break up the monotony. I completely disagree with separation of Banjo/kazooie undermining the point. The point of having that opening where you can bring your fast food to the dinosaur world is tied to a quest. One of the dinosaurs wants to try new foods and you have to bring it to them. Banjo may not be carrying the eggs for valid reasons. And I find it so nitpicky to even point it out without putting any real effort on explaining how it works. I will completely agree that the bird race in the sky world is practically impossible and always annoyed me. Overall I understand your annoyance. And I get it's your opinion. but dont you think for a second that maybe just maybe you're blowing it out of proportion?

@EvilApple567
@EvilApple567 4 года назад
It's not that unpopular, but I don't think your comment does a good job of justifying it, especially because it highlights what many don't enjoy about Tooie. To me Tooie just feels like more of an adventure, back tracking to previous worlds and helping out all the inhabitants of the island throughout the game and such gives it a much more cohesive vibe akin to a Zelda title than just visiting one off areas for the sake of theme variety that feel like they exist in some alternate dimension (although there is one exception, Mad Monster Mansion being Grunty's home). That's a huge part of Tooie to me, is that all the "worlds" are just real areas of the island which you can clearly see once you reach the final stage Cloud Cookooland (although I'm not sure how the Hailfire Peaks entrance works).
@genericyoutubecommentchann7418
@genericyoutubecommentchann7418 4 года назад
EvilApple567 I wasn’t trying to make an objective argument for the game, and I didn’t really feel like writing a paragraph at the time, so I only picked one thing for that reason. I like Tooie more for other reasons too, such as the reason you mentioned, an ever-growing move set which I thought was more fun than the original, more humorous dialogue, and worlds that are more challenging than your average 3D platformer. But I like the length of this game the best because the first game had too many jiggys that were just lying around and just required you to walk up to them without any sort of effort involved. It felt more like I got a participation award than an actual reward for doing something. As a result, that game is very short, and most worlds can be completed in about 20 minutes or less on average during repeat playthoughs. Tooie had far fewer of these moments and had more of a greater emphasis on problem solving to figure out how to acquire jiggies and other collectibles, which made it much more satisfying for me. And the game wasn’t over too quickly. I understand why people don’t like it because it’s hard to 100% the first time, but I personally like to enjoy games causally during the first run and 100% it later. I did use the Xbox version with the jiggy tips, so maybe I wouldn’t have liked the original version, but I still like a longer game that’s due to problem solving than a shorter game that’s too easy most of the time. (I do still really like the original, but I much prefer the sequel for this reason.)

Tooie is about as bad as he made it sound. All of the inspired design decisions from Kazooie, like tight, landmark-based, intuitive level design with nice consistent pacing. You don't really have to run around for more then 30 seconds ever to find something interesting to interact with that results in a jiggie, and The Thing That Needs to Be Done to get a jiggie is always pretty simple and straight to the point. Tooie on the other hand has these massive levels with 5 ways to "push buttons", there's Banjo+Kazooie, Banjo, Kazooie, Mumbo and the transformation. Go to the place as the right form, do the thing, backtrack to transform back to the next form you need for the next activity, then backbacktrack back through the massive, mapless, maze-like level. Many of the jiggies have "video game logic" problems, where the solution to the problem is not obvious at all: for example, the hot pool in hailfire peaks that you can't do anything with until you get to the last level. Between that and all the backbackbacktracking in different forms, it can be extremely painful to play through for the first time unless you have the determination of an 8 year old or just use a walkthrough.

It's three times as tedious if you don't know what to do and where to go because you aren't consulting a walkthrough as necessary. I want to like it, but I don't think I do. Yeah, even years after the paradigm shift in philosophy, I'm still in the minority that Banjo Tooie is the superior game due to the content and actions, though my bias is more skewed towards to the fact that Tooie was where I started with the duo rather than the first game and the issue of "the sequel *has* to be better by default, right?" logic back in the heyday. Nostalgia aside, I feel the reasoning as to why the shift occurred was that Tooie was too ambitious a game and after the bloated collect-a-thon that was Donkey Kong 64, where you were literally collecting things just to collect other things, Banjo-Kazooie appears more like a happier medium of the collection-based gaming where it's level based and not world based and you aren't forced to do route planning and optimization. In Tooie, you can't do or go to certain areas until after you unlock advanced abilities from Jamjars or visiting other regions of the Isle of Hags, while in Kazooie, you could practically 100% a level with the exception of Freezeezy Peak or Gobi's Desert on your first visit. But, what made Tooie so... impressive for me was just how much it helped build the world of the series and its quirks. People like to use Kazooie as an example of storytelling by mentioning "the Gruntilda effect", but in reality, you don't garner much in dialogue from Banjo & Kazooie aside from some cutscenes. Throughout Tooie, however, they interact more often, and you get to see their personalities, especially Kazooie's, where her snark and contempt made her the more endearing one to me. You also get to see the world evolve and change as time goes on through your actions, while in Kazooie, things reset due to its level-based structure. Characters you help out early on can be encountered later or be totally unexpected based upon your actions, with one of my favorite worlds being Witchyworld, which is a pivotal area in the game for both the game's mechanics, but also where you run into several old characters, such as Gobi (who despises the bear and breegull) as well as Ms. Boggy and her children (which includes my personal favorite moment in the game, though many people may look at it as child abuse, where after you take a now morbidly obese Groggy back to her, she smashes him twice with her purse and sends him home crying). It's all relative, of course. From a mechanics standpoint, Kazooie is clearly what dedicated gamers want, but from a story perspective, and something casual gamers and people no longer as dedicated into the hobby might look into, Tooie is the game due to the time you would invest into.

Rareware had separate internal teams at the time, and so Banjo-Tooie not having the aiming controls of a game that had an overlapping development cycle with it, is expected. Donkey Kong 64 was released on November 22, 1999. Banjo-Tooie was released November 20, 2000. Banjo-Tooie's game-play was already encoded by 1999, because work began on it, even before Banjo-Kazooie was released.

Funny thing is, and I know people are going to hate me for saying this, but as much of a divisive game DK64 is in terms of being a collect-a-thon, it does a better job driving the story and reminding the player the stakes at hand with pre-world cutscenes of K.Rool and his Blast-O-Matic than Tooie does, if not better than Kazooie.

Great review! Even though I loved Banjo-Tooie as a kid for its world building, NPCs and (back then) mind-blowing interconnectivity, I agree that it's a chore for a new player. You showcased very well what the developers should consider when making a sequel to this game. There's definitely elements they should take from BT, but a stronger focus on BKs structure would make it way more consistently fun and replayable in the long run.

Speedrunning stresses me out. I prefer to take the level in, breathe and get as much out of the game as possible. You know something that makes me wonder? In the old days when we were kids games like dk 64 and banjo tooie that were a slight pain in the ass to complete some objectives, did we like them that much better because they wasted our time? Because i remember both dk 64 and Banjo Tooie very fondly from when I was child. Though that stupid barrel where you force the snappers into a hole in the castle level can go die in a hole. I loved these games and finding things to come back to and explore with a different character later. But nowadays i find it kinda tedious because i am a working adult with limited time. While I really appreciate the time and effort you took to make this video, I've never disagreed with an opinion on a game as much as in this case. It feels like you expect any 'collectathon' to be plain and easy, being playable without much thought. But this is just not what Banjo-Tooie wants to be. It's a complex puzzle - comparable to a Zelda dungeon like you said yourself. It forces you to create a mental map of the levels, know all the different characters/moves at your disposal and combine them in interesting ways. Having a jiggy accessable via an entrance from a different world for example, feels immensely rewarding once you figure it out. The level-design is also more clever than you give it credit for. There's lots of places where the developers made sure non of the different characters could get stuck, even giving you multiple ways to reach the same destination with different characters or placing additional platforms so other characters could get somewhere they don't even necessarily need to be. This is also the reason why you cannot split anywhere, as it would make using those additional routes unnecessary and simply break the intended level-design and navigation puzzles, which make a big part of the game. I agree with other points though, like the lack of a map system, the aiming controls or some less than optimal bossfights. I'd even include the timer-based first-person sections as really annoying and am surprised you rated them so positevly. In my opinion though, all in all this feels like a list of negatives that only result from a misinterpretation of what the game wants to be in the first place. It's fine if you dislike this kind of complex, interwoven, puzzle-style gameplay. But don't try to judge the game on what YOU want it to be. It feels like criticizing Mario Kart for not having a deep story and a crafting system.

I think you have to compare to other collectathons at the time too like Spyro 2 to understand his point. Having complex level design is not a problem, but wandering around for circles or doing "busy work" doesnt really contribute to the challenge or the fun of the game. Making the player to pick a paper and a pen to draw the map or watching a walkthrough is certainly not an ideal way of making a game.

31:15 Because they make you think about how to tackle parts of the levels with just one of them. It is annoying how you can't rejoin automatically when exiting a level or entering the train though. It's the same with the shoes being power ups on a timer. *watches more* Ya know, maybe this should've just been Zooie Tooie: Without Mumbo The level structure used here works in Zelda because they have map systems and because they don't make you go back and forth over and over like the dodgem example you brought up.

Personally, I much prefer Tooie over Kazooie - not because I think one is necessarily a better game over the other - but because Tooie feels much more rewarding than Kazooie in terms of challenge and investment. That being said, I'd be much more willing to play Kazooie on a casual basis because of said investment cost (Kazooie is just a much more compact/concise game, which makes it more streamlined), but I find no issue with having Tooie being a bigger game that requires more time put into it. I'll concede that ultimately it boils down to personal preference, and that obviously Tooie isn't perfect by any means (a map system would have certainly helped many areas in the game), but I tend to observe Tooie more from a lore/series perspective than just an individual experience: it took the world of Kazooie, made it fleshed out, and gave it a lot more substance. Having the worlds feel real and interwoven with one another alone gives this game much more value to me. One thing I would have liked would have been more involvement from Grunty and her sisters throughout the middle of the game, but I think that was partially what role Klungo played. I also feel like backtracking gets used as a negative aspect of gaming way too much these days. There are moments where it can be frustrating to have to travel back and forth to accomplish an objective, but Tooie's challenges are all about solving multi-step puzzles using the tools you're given: and it excels at that, in my opinion. For certain missions, I completely understand the complaint that having to revisit areas several times gets tedious - but having to revisit areas because you didn't solve the puzzle in the correct order isn't a valid criticism to me. All and all, I appreciate your criticisms of Tooie, but I feel as though you focused way too much on the negative aspects and may have missed a lot of the intent of the design choices the game utilized. The one thing I think legitimately everyone can agree on though, is fuck Canary Mary.

@zeeteepippi275
@zeeteepippi275 4 года назад
@@kevinvu5432 The point of collect a thons is collecting things. The things should be relatively simple to collect, and that's where Tooie falls short. Tedious sidequests like escorting characters and arbitrary progression gates are fine in Zelda where you get substantial rewards like heart containers and items that give you a tangible benefit. Collect a thons thrive in the rhythm of consistently getting new objects that immediately feel good to collect for the sake of having them and making your completion percentage go up. The challenge is the reward, and the collectable objects are your trophy. If the challenge isn't fun, the trophy isn't gonna be satisfying to collect. That's why locking things behind moves in another stage or just plain making you switch to another character just to grab different colored bananas isn't satisfying. You can see Tooie as an adventure game or a metroidvania, but as a collect a thon it is just does not hold as well as Kazooie in that aspect.
