If you were wondering what the inside of a roro car ship looks like, lets check out this massive Glovis car carrier. Short documentary walking around a Roro ship and just how massive one of these things are. Roro means roll on roll off. This means the vehicle must be driven under its own engine power. This is how the vehicle unloading process works and how cars arrived to any major sea port. For this type of operation you need, drivers to discharge cargo, van drivers to return the drivers back to the ship. A roro ship is same size as a container ship, but the cargo is stored all inside the ship. Roro ships are a vital part of the automotive car supply chain. These massive ships allow millions of cars to be shipped over seas each year. Glovis ship fire suppression system are on board each ship to ensure the safety of the cargo and crew.
I will walk several different levels of the roro car ship and show you how the cars are stowed and shipped from one country to another. I hope this help you understand the layout inside of a roro car ship. There is much more, but I thought this would give the RU-vid community an inside the ship perspective. These are how the Kia's come into the USA. Not all the vehicles on ship are for our port. The ship when full from Korea, usually stops at 4 to 5 different major sea ports to unload the cars. Thanks for watching! Yeah I am all good thanks for your concern. Very unfortunate that the Felicity Ace and all its cargo was lost. I have worked cargo discharge on that vessel several times. Very said for this ship indeed, but at least all of the crew was safely evacuated from the ship.

There was a fire onboard a ship just like this last night in Port Newark, NJ… killed two FireFighters and injured several more when they got trapped between cars and decks. I’m curious as hell how a car just self-combusts causing an inferno that lasts for 24 hours? Cool video though for sure! These vessels are incredible (but clearly have safety hazards that we likely need to address). From reports by Newark Fire Department some of the issues with fighting the fire last night was lack of adequate water suppression (Firefighters had to utilize onboard ship fire equipment) and ventilation was an issue (which is not typical in structure fires). Any thoughts on this type of situation? Is fire a concern onboard these ships? And I’m right there with you on not wanting to be 40 feet BELOW sea level lol… but to be clear, if anything happened causing a catastrophe like a hull or keel crack, chances are being below sea level won’t make much of a difference in the scheme of things unless water is flooding in… in which case there are bigger problems to worry about.
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive Год назад
My guess is that it was probably another EV battery that started the fire.
@gisobo
@gisobo Год назад
Car fires do often start in the 12V electrics, no matter the kind of fuel. Problem is, if you don't react ultra fast, the whole deck becomes an inferno. So you need a fast reacting and powerful fire extinguishing system and just as powerful bilge pumps to keep the fire from spreading. And while it's literally impossible to extinguish a burning EV battery, you can get away the heat just by spraying it with water.

Hi i live in los angles near the port.. I would be interested in working In this field. I'm moving the cars off the ship and I was just wondering how just want to find out where to apply they have any opportunities to do so? Would you know?
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 года назад
To be a driver, you would have to be part of the Longshore labor union. Those are very hard jobs to obtain, since all jobs are lottery driven. How this works is each PMA employee get a lottery card once per year or so, they can write down whoever's name they want on the card. When the port needs more workers they draw cars from the pot. And just like that if your name is drawn you are now a union casual. If you don't know someone who will put your name in the pot, you don't really have a chance of ever getting a job. Sometimes the port will open up for new hires from general public every 10 years or so, you would have to keep an eye out for that on their website. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for watching and that was a great question.

I've always wondered that how you handle the keys of the cars? Do you leave them in the ignition plug? I work in a used car park with 150 cars and we always search for the right key... which sucks. How you do it?
@gablan1468
@gablan1468 Год назад
Cars are left unlocked with the car key inside (always left in the same place). Only the most expensive cars, such as Rolls Royce for example, are being locked and the keys are with the Chief Mate until discharging. In the rare occasion of a car being locked by itself with the key remaining inside, the receiving company has to decide how to deal with it - mostly they will call a keymaster to open it.

If and when cars are damaged. We have to do a full damage report. The customer Glovis and our company executives are notified. It's not a fun process. In my opinion.... These are the second most dangerous ships at sea. More dangerous than oil or gas transporters. The most dangerous? Cruise ships. Without a doubt. Mixed crews who do not speak a common language...in an emergency: Useless. No disrespect but fact. (I am speaking from 17 years at sea......)(Various crews......some good some bad.) Passengers who have not even bothered to know the basics.......Not even read the instructions on the back of their doors. Costa Concordia was a miracle of survival: A few meters more off-shore...the death toll would have been horrendous, hundreds would have died. The ship would have turned turtle. They are top heavy with a low GM (Some will know what I refer to.).... In the drive for profit; A disaster is only inevitable.

@JDMRightHandDrive 3 года назад
I used an Import broker, there is a lot of different paperwork to complete in import process. The customs entry packet I received from the Import Broker was about 50 pages. All the paperwork needs to be verified by the US customs before they stamp their seal of approval. I think it is worth paying the money to not have to deal with the headache. Even if you hire an agent, there is still a lot of paper work you will have to do. You have to send different documents to various companies to get your cargo released from port. I want to make a video on this, but it's going to be a hard one to edit.

Depending on the how busy the ports are, the ship line will schedule with the sea port to make sure they can get right into the terminal and get the cargo offloaded quickly. Unloading (or discharging in sailor's language) can be done in one, maximum two days. It really depends on how many units you will be discharging, and it also depends on the speed of the stevedores (the people who do it). Crew is mostly comprised of about 20-22 people, not more. Everybody works at all times, especially during cargo operations.

Any idea on ships damage control as far as what foreman and crew are trained for? when fire breaks out.. after hearing about the car carrier that caught fire today in the Atlantic on its way to Rhode Island..2/17/22
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 года назад
I fortunately have never had any type of fire break out on any vessel with me on board. All these ships have fire suppression systems and a very loud fire alarm system. The fire alarms are so load they can damage your ears. The staff at the sea port is property trained understand how to properly evacuate the vessel if a fire was to break out. Each worker walks the entire ship first thing in the morning when they de-lash all the vehicles from the deck. This gives every worker/supervisor a chance to get oriented with the ship layout. Each Foreman is only responsible for so many longshore workers, and would ensure every worker was evacuated. Coast Guard and the fire department would be able to respond to our terminal to assist as well. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Very much indeed. There are signs everywhere on the ship that say AFT or FORE. That way you know which direction is the front and back of the ship. This helps me know which way to go. Plus, I have my stow map of the ship in my pocket, which keeps me from getting lost.

Can you please tell how loading is done on car carrier Heard that few decks are movable And also why there are side rams
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 3 года назад
I have never seen a load back operation, since my location is strictly discharge. If you do a search on YT, there are several good videos to give a good perspective on how loading is done. Yes you are correct, there are a couple of decks, where the height is adjustable. Usually it is the deck above the main deck, which can be lifted up, to fit taller cargo on the main deck. Stuff like large farming equipment or construction equipment, like loaders and excavators. I have also seen the main deck filled with Hyundai commercial busses, same size as a Metro Bus. Most vessels have side ramps on the port side of the ship. These can be used to set up a 2 way traffic pattern. It helps when the ship is almost full, give you more options to move things around differently with space limitations.
