Rory Stewart reads out 1982 Eton letter about Boris Johnson’s ‘gross failure’

Boris Johnson's perceived lack of commitment to academia as a schoolboy was highlighted in a letter from Eton College to his father, Stanley, in 1982 and read to the public on Thursday night by his one-time leadership rival Rory Stewart.

At the Royal Albert Hall event, Stewart joked that the letter from the prime minister's former housemaster constituted his resignation from the Conservative party, which he announced formally on Friday morning, saying he planned to run for London mayor. The audience seemed to delight in the letter, which says the schoolboy had adopted a 'disgracefully cavalier' attitude to his classical studies and 'sometimes seems affronted when criticised'

Despite his laziness and complacency, he was eventually awarded a second class degree at Oxford… and was “deeply unhappy” that he did not get the “first” that he felt he was entitled to. And later of course, he was given a job with The Times through his family connections, from which he was promptly sacked for dishonesty. Who would’ve thought it?

@@bradavon Yes, too few had figured him out by 2016. I think they could have but were too lazy to really research his record. Then there were those who find charisma more important than actual actions. Both reasons are very bad in a democracy. People think voting is a right. It is but it is also a responsibility to do all you can to get the right information before making the decision on whom to vote for. In a democracy the ultimate power lies with the people which also means the ultimate responsibility. Perhaps this needs to be taught at schools as well as how to research a candidate.

@Sharon Washington He 's nowhere near "twice Boris" and it is only, in my view, the surging level of socialism in Scotland that forces this guy to distance himself from the Crime Minister, but Rory is less than half of Starmer and less than a thousand of Jeremy Corbyn. Corbyn would have stopped the massive fuel price profiteering and he would have put a stop to supermarkets' greedy price increases. This letter to Stanley Johnson has been in circulation for some time now. Had it been my son it would never had seen the light of day for fear of embarrassment. By making this letter public it seems Stanley has a very low opinion of his own flesh and blood. Perhaps Stanley's opinion is the correct one.

One should be quite careful with statistics like these. Firstly, often bills do more than just one thing. Secondly, party discipline exists. Thirdly, there's finite money and infinite causes - prioritisation is key, not simply saying "yes" to every nice thing.

Well, that made it very clear for me. As a deeply conflicted lifetime Tory voter (whenever I waiver in my determination not to vote again for the conservatives), I just have to think of Boris and then I let out a sigh and realise it’s impossible to vote for a party that elected him in full knowledge he is rotten to the core. Rory on the other hand is brilliant!

What a shame that the teacher had his personality down to a tee and yet the British public loved him and agreed he was exceptional and was not subject to the obligations required of others. Nope, I don't agree, and I think its a daft idea to be thinking like that. This is ALL our future at stake here. We can't just "give in" and "play nice". The whole "get out of the EU" was rigged in the first place. Even when he resigned it was less of an apology for wrongdoing and more the,attitude of ' they don't know what they have done , they will be sorry , can they not see how great a leader I am .' Basically blaming everyonexelse fir his own short comings which is what has been Johnson's MO throughout his life.
