Frank Sinatra presenting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Rosalind Russell ("His Girl Friday" "Gypsy" "Auntie Mame") at the 45th Academy Awards® in 1973.
I’ve watched “Auntie Mame” many times, and I couldn’t agree more that Rosalind Russell deserved an Oscar. She was a wonderful actress and a wonderful woman.
Auntie Mame deserved All 6 Oscars it was nominated for. If ever a movie was robbed on awards night it is Auntie Mame. And Angela Lansbury was robbed of the film role in Mame. (Lucille Ball, as wonderful and pioneering as she was, should have never accepted the part.)
Good lord, these women of the Golden Age of Hollywood were truly "something else." It will never be this good again. They are a generation of people that have Gone With the Wind.
leighgate2 Realistically speaking , they all will be 'GONE W/ THE WIND,' as we will be as well. They will always be alive on film for each new generation to discover & enjoy.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any help you can give me
I've never seen this clip before and I absolutely LOVE how Sinatra does not allow this wonderful, graceful, elegant woman leave the stage without bringing her back to center stage to get an applause she so lovingly deserved....back then, it was truly HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY!!!!
Once in a while someone from the Hollywood community dispels the prevalent impression that actors are just self-absorbed egos. Rosalind Russell stands out as that exception -- a class act with a heart that embraced the humanity around her. She was an amazing and inspiring person. In her acceptance speech she said "The people of this nation have a golden tradition of taking care of each other." Alas, if only that were true today.
When I said Russell was a national treasure i meant it! She may not have gotten the headlines like Crawford and turner did but she helped in her own little way. Cary grant said there will never be another like her and he was right Everything is coming up roses and lollipops for Rosalind. Everything!
@@rr7firefly thank you for asking me. I am an european man from Northern Italy :) Sorry if I did not put any photo of me here, but you can find me on Facebook under the very same name :) its an historical imperial royal family name...hope to read you again! Loved how you expressed your profound and genuinely human observation about Miss Russel's speech! Take care, loving man...
Rosalind Russell Brisson was the epitome of dignity, selfless generosity, kindness, and compassionate love. I do not believe this great lady ever thought of herself first. Her simple speed at the Academy Awards brings me to tears every time I view it; I sorely miss her still today. Roz left this world a much better place.
This speech shows the real side of Frank, great heartfelt speech. He knew how much she did because he did just as much if not more. Two great STARS, we miss them both.
She was so good in so many things. So loved by so many to whom she meant so much. An actress who never got the acclaim of her peers that she deserved, but who never failed to congratulate them on the acclaim they achieved. Class and grace. Elegance and fortitude. Let's hear it once again for Auntie Mame, Sister Kenny, Silvia Fowler and His Girl Friday! and the woman who brought them to life, Rosalind Russell. RIP
"... I have been the victim, of this kindness..." That line, delivered by such a classy, selfless and talented person as Rosalind Russell brought tears to my eyes. A role model that inspires to this day.
the most profoundly brilliant comic actress of her generation (1930's and 1940's especially) before lucy. pure class and grace. her performance in "the women" is just about the best comic acting ever seen on screen at that time.
Ball always credited the great Carole Lombard and the brilliant Buster Keaton for her inspiration with comedy, but I suspect, too, that Russell was an influence. In any case, Russell was a class act and a super special actress. Grace and talent so sorely - and sadly - missing in today's world of "entertainment."
Steven Karash: She was indeed. I've watched 'The Women' many times and never tire of hearing her machine-gun delivery, where you can hear every word. How she does that I don't know. She is a marvel.
steven karash just watched the women which was the first time i ever saw one of her movies. i was totally blown away, she was by far the best performer in a film of some really great performances.
No standing ovation for Rosalind Russell??? That IS incredible! As an actress and as a human being, RR deserves our full admiration and respect. No actress could have done better than her in HIS GIRL FRIDAY, AUNTIE MAME; GIPSY and several other films. One of the greats, she was.
Ricardo Bigi I couldn't have said it better. She deserved a standing ovation at least. Considering the Oscars she was robbed of. She was one of the greatest actresses and humanitarian.
95KIPPIE Absolutely. Rosalind Russell was a very great actress and a generous human being. Her autobiography LIFE IS A BANQUET makes for very good reading. And her acceptance speech here is truly a lesson in elegance and sincerity. Genuine class, no frills.
Ricardo Bigi Very true! Class all the way. Her book was a great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't think she was even considered really beautiful, or a sex symbol in the golden era. She was beautiful through and through, and her class and elegance made her even more beautiful than most of her time. I loved all her movies, but especially Auntie Mame, and no one could have done it like her.
95KIPPIE No one could have done Auntie Mame like her. The version done in 74' with Lucille Ball and Beatrice Arthur was really bad. They should have left it alone, because I felt they failed miserably at it.
Not only was she an exceptional actress and creative person, but she was also a superlative writer. I highly recommend her autobiography “Life’s A Banquet.” Truly an American original.
Roz was something very special. Her performance in HIS GIRL FRIDAY is perhaps the greatest female comedic performance of all time. There will never be one quite like her ever again.
She got cancer and had the first mastectomy in 1960 and the second in 1964. She also had a hip replacement in 1976 and died later that year. She was a trouper and such an incredibly generous lady!
She was an amazing woman, person and actress. I loved all her performances in her movies, and her gentle award speeches were humble. My favorite movie of her's was Auntie Mame. On a humanitarian note, what she did for others throughout the years made her a legend.
Dear Rosalind Russell....my parents took me to see Auntie Mame when I was 12 and I have been in love with her ever since. My Dad got me a copy of the play and I read it over and over again, imagining Roz in every scene. She was a perfect actress and a fabulous lady with amazing class and grace. I still love her with all my heart!
ROZ RUSSELL is my favorite actress from the 1930s & 1940s. My Mom introduced me to all her early films especially ,"The Women." In later years it was "Auntie Mame." She was so marvelous in all her films . Check out a little known gem of a role in ,"Oh Dad, Poor Dad ..." (1967). Also ,her appearance on "What's My Line,""fr.Jan.1953 is one of the most hilarious I've ever seen. U can find it on Utube. She was so deserving of an Oscar, especially for "Auntie Mame.."thank God the academy recognized her B4 it was too late, since she died in 1976.
Would someone PLEASE invent a time machine? I want to go back in time...to the days when people like this, graced screens & touched lives. Just let me know..my bags are packed. God Bless You Miss Roz.
Rosalind was the epitomy of grace, elegance, style and class. She never got sucked into that vaccuum called Hollywood. A great wife, friend, tireless giver of herself to all the charities she worked with. She was such a humanitarian. My most favorite actress of all time
Hi..friends.... I was born on july 4,2001..I'm a filipino Everyday...I keep on watching rosalind russell's Old movies....I love her so much... I keep on watching...her movies...just like (Where angels go,trouble follows, aunt mame, And other black and white films of hers...... I tought she still alive in 2014...but when I read the facts og rosalind russell....she dead,,she's my idol...I cried,..when I read this.... Rosalind russell:: Born:June 4,1907 Died:No. 28,1976 (aged 69) Cause of death: Breast Cancer Resting place: Holy Cross Cementary,Culver City Occupation:Actress, singer, screenwritter Spouse(s):Frederick Brisson (m. 1941-1976) Children: Lance (b. 1943) I loved you Rosalind Russell Brisson... :'(
Sad to see how arthritis had ravaged her and the effects of cortisone. She was a champ and a first class lady. Makes me incredibly sad knowing each year we slip farther and farther away from people of her character and courage.
THANKS, I was wondering what illness she mentioned. Was it Rhumatoid Arthritis she had? Yes, cortisone has bad side effects, i was on it for a while, my doctor did not want to renew the prescription, cause it also brittle the bones. Please, i would greatly appreciate it if you have more information on her.. Thanks. My all time favorite of hers was, AUNTIE MAME, how i love her acting,. THIS movie is the greatest stress reliever. Rip great one ♡
She was so gracious. Such a dear, dear woman. She would die from breast cancer (I had previously, mistakenly said it was lung cancer) just a few short years after accepting the award. May she be remembered and loved always.
Should have won one for Best Actress, but competition back in the day was much tougher, than today's standards. Body of work is great, enjoyed all of her comedy & drama movies. Yes, One of the Greats.
What a lovely lady. She was a wonderful humanitarian. I absolutely loved her performance in Auntie Mame. We love you Auntie Mame, May you rest in peace.
Two great talents, each in their own right. Sinatra brought a great humility to his introduction as did she in her acceptance speech. While Sinatra may not have led a perfect life he knew class and grace and goodness and when to applaud it. Ms. Russell was well loved and admired by her peers and much of her generosity was not made known until her passing. Sinatra was also very generous with not only his wealth but his time, largely unknown as well. May they both know heaven in all it’s glory. Their like will not be seen again, sadly.
I will never forget Rosalind Russell's performance in Picnic!!! That film was so great in telling a story and my all time favorite Rosalind Russell Performance. I also liked her role in A Woman of Distinction with Ray Milland. The Trouble with Angels and her Great Role in Auntie Mame. His Girl Friday and all of the Wonderful Performances that I totally enjoyed. A real Classic Lady.
Her performance in Picnic was absolutely brilliant. Her heart wrenching scene with Arthur O'Connell begging him to marry her shows some of the best of the art of acting. Today? No way. They don't have the understanding and particularly the sensitivity. No way. Of course, Auntie Mame goes without saying. She was a great!!!
@@jamesmonroe7751 Mourning Becomes Electra is another masterpiece where Russell shines in a dramatic role. It was her second back to back nomination for best actress. The prior year she received a nomination for her role as Sister Kenny in the self titled film. Mourning Becomes Electra is not to be missed.
This speech by Ms. Russell should be rebroadcast on national tv and to our now dictator, so Americans, of all color, will remember when we were proud to be Americans, and not made to feel ashamed for our contributions to humanity.
That was great. She does have a wonderful speaking voice. And since she was a Catholic and went to Catholic schools, I think that helped her be totally believable as Reverend Mother.
My gosh the woman actually wrote the damn play and gave the credit to others! She was a very gracious giving generous woman. She absolutely was auntie mame!!!
She was an amazing actress....in both comedy and drama she was flawless. For all the charity work she did that audience couldn't bother to give her a standing ovation. Both gave great speeches.
RIP Rosalind Russell (June 4, 1907 - November 28, 1976), aged 69 And RIP Frank Sinatra (December 12, 1915 - May 14, 1998), aged 82 You both will always be remembered as legends.
Rosalind Russell was just amazing. She had so many one line jokes in "His Girl Friday", and it's hysterical. She was terrific in "Rosie" and in "Auntie Mame". I always think of her when I think of "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows" and "The Trouble with Angels". If you haven't seen any of the movies I mentioned, you're in for a treat once you do.
What an amazing, beautiful person you were Rosalind Russell. I've always really liked you in your films and hearing what Frank Sinatra said about you and seeing you speak makes me realize just how great and humbled a person you were. I'm sorry for your struggle with breast cancer and that it took your life. The day you died we lost an angel but heaven gained one. God bless you.
Genius! An extraordinary actress, one of the best. And a true star! It's a great shame she didn't win an Oscar for "Mourning Becomes Electra" and "Auntie Mame". Great Roz!!!!! 🍾 ✨
Such an animated talent. Watch this speech. Even with age, you can see Auntie Mame or Hildie. I have introduced Auntie Mame to many people, old and young. None thought it was anything less than brilliant. Forget Lucy, forget Angela Lansbury. There is only one Mame Dennis Burnside.
What a lovely lady and a great actress they don't make them like that anymore Just watched the film Gipsy again on easter Monday she was fantastic as rose nobody deserved that special Oscar more.
Watching her movies all day. My favorite is Auntie Mame and an epic movie A Majority of One. She was a legend. Rip beautiful, talented and a humanitarian.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Saw a clip of Helen Hayes winning her second Oscar the other day and asked myself why Joan Crawford of all people accepted on her behalf before I realized that it was actually Rosalind Russell who accepted it.
i also never knew about her charitable work. i love and respect her even more. the women is one of my favorite movies. along with auntie mame, and the trouble with angels. happy new year, and peace to all in 2009!
Mike Field The majority of celebrities of the past followed their talents, that brought them success & fortune. Today most celebrities(not all), follow the $ fortune first, thinking somehow it will lead them to being talented. What a Farce ! They think Shock value is a talent. We mostly have the fifteen minute of fame seekers....thank God that's not the case with all.
Rosalind Russell was a terrific lady. Rent "Gypsy" with Natalie Wood, or "My Gal Friday" with Cary Grant, or "The Trouble with Angels" and see what true talent is -- in an expression, an eye brow lift, a look. She was the real deal. On and off camera it seems.
My favorite. I always loved her since I first saw her in movies. Classy, funny, sweet, talented.....but enough about me, she also shares some of those same traits as well.
These stars do SO MUCH that the public never hears about. Here are two of the biggest givers. Frank Sinatra and Rosalind Russell. Not to leave out the great Danny Kaye, we miss them all very much!!
Thank you very much for this posting. As all have said......she was a Great lady and not enough honoured or appreciated for her brilliant dramatic and comedic talents. I used to see her in the late 60's early 70's in Food Giant Market Beverly Hills doing her shopping. In the days when legends could walk among us. She was all swollen from the medication to help with her crippling arthritis. She suffered terribly, was mostly in pain since many years. There are no more such role models in Hollywood
They could not have picked a better person to play the role of Mother Superior in those movies. Her being a devout Catholic made it all the more fitting. :-)
Rosalind stole everything that wasn't nailed down in "The Women." I crack that movie open occasionally as a treat. Whatever she was in, she's a gift that keeps giving.
@@arthurgearheard4701 I assure you, Republican stars like Joan, Doris Day, Irene Dunne, even Reagan knew or cared little about policy or history, and I could say the same for Frank and his Democrat-Republican flip-flop. Ethel Merman: "Of course I know there's a war going on. I read Variety."
Get a copy of Aunti Mame! you'll be blown away... and these posing, pretty faced starlets that grace the pages of People, etc. will never measure up. None have the charm, class or wit of this great woman.
