In today's video, draw a rose with me while I use my favorite variation of charcoal pencils - Cretacolor Oil-Based Charcoal. I haven't used these pencils on my channel for a while as I have been focused on watercolor and watercolor pencils lately, as well as the matte graphite pencils that I have used a few times.
However, when given the choice between regular graphite or charcoal, I'd still choose these Cretacolor pencils because they are so much less messy and easy to create different values with only the pencils themselves and not separate blending tools.
I hope you guys enjoy this drawing today! It was so much fun to go back to using my Cretacolors after a long break from them, but I am definitely motivated to use them more now! Let me know if you enjoy these types of videos!

Your rose is so pretty! I agree - roses are hard to wrap your mind around when it comes to drawing and painting them. These pencils looked really nice to work with. 👍

Mont Marte makes my favorite charcoal.They come in a set of 3 compressed woodless charcoal sticks. Their performance blew me out..Now I only use those for sketching..(I also use General's so I believe I have the golden standard to judge)My least favorite comes from my alltime favorite brand,which makes THE best sketching pencils,the Koh-I-Noor.

Oof i NEVER know how to properly utilized the compressed sticks. I will need to watch a tutorial or something...ahhh yeah weird koh-i-nor is usually good!

what is the difference between charcoal and carbon? i thought carbon was charcoal?
@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 2 года назад
It is a different form. The charcoal pencils create a lot more dust and debris compared to the carbon ones. The tone looks a bit different too. Charcoal pencils feel more scratchy to me

My desk is frequently messy with spilled art supplies. I use a cleaning product called Cif which is a slightly abrasive kitchen cleaner and it gets pretty much everything off. I have no idea if there is an equivalent product in America. Actually in Australia it is called Jif but I have a feeling that’s a peanut butter brand over your way! 😂 Moving on…wouldn’t it be great to be sponsored by an art company! You certainly know how to work those Cretacolors. I was about to say be careful with your hand and then you mentioned the hand pain! 😰 Please make sure to get plenty of rest, plus do regular hand stretches and don’t get yourself stuck in a brace like silly old me. But your rose turned out really stunning! ❤️

@AlexisCassandraArt 2 года назад
Ah yes here it is peanut butter😂 I could always try cleaning my desk with that🤣 but I think I will need to look into something not super harsh chemical-smelling that I could use! These stains are just gross now😂 I hope we get sponsored one day. I think hand stretches are worth spending time on now that I’ve seen a lot of artists ending up with hand pain! It’s one of those things you don’t really think of unless it’s already become a problem but I should get proactive about this, especially when I start spending more time creating art in the future!

My most recent super discovery,came after I tried the Hahnemuhle drawing paper called "Dessin" It's 150gsm(70lbs). I use Arches Hot pressed for my graphite drawings, BUT this paper... has the most exiting feel when you draw on it. It's like 5 times better than any other "feel" which also screams quality. I also got the Fabriano Accademia and the Hahnemuhle 190gsm Skizze. All are papers I should have gotten years ago. They are SO good!! I won't go back to Canson and Daller Rowney,never again! These papers make those brands feel so poor quality... PS Dessin was a smoother than hot pressed but not as smooth as brisbri. The Fabriano Accademia 200gsm was way rougher but still on the smooth side. Ive heard the Skizze 190,is great for Polychromos but hadnt the time to check on that!

I just took note of all of these. Never heard of them, but I am always excited to try new paper. I haven't been doing much art recently so no excuse to buy new paper. Ilove trying it out though. thanks for the recommendations:)

I liked the way the Cretacolor looked. I have not liked the way charcoal makes such a mess. I am at my son’s house for 2 more months and don’t want to mess up his house. So I bought the wolf set and then some oil graphite pencils and pastels. Love them. I want to see how these combine with other pastels and charcoal for people. I will search more videos to see if this has been done. It not, would love to see you try it. If you haven’t already.

I agree, charcoal can make a really big mess. I haven't tried all of the different variations, but so far I'm really enjoying anything that leaves less powder/residue! Maybe I can do some more comparison in the future. thanks for watching:)

Cretacolor nero can also be used with graphite pencils...usually the charcoal pencil didn't go well with graphite but cretacolor wins here

Now that's a great work of art. It speaks to me. It is not only illustrating the rose, it is expressing it.You should sell it if you are willing to part with it. Very high caliber art.

@@AlexisCassandraArt Yeah you've been developing your art capabilities and may not be objectively aware of your current level of excellence. I think you got the stuff. Maybe some more knowledgeable than me can also provide feedback. One thing I have thought about art that sounds cliched or ignorant is "bigger is better" like for someone wanting to cover a good amount of wall space. Doing larger prints of some of your existing smaller work might be nice. Like say that sharks drawing you did blown up might fit well in some young guys man cave. It has what I consider a somewhat visceral look. Maybe that sounds weird, but that's another example of your art being expressive.

I do like these pencils but they can’t go as dark as some other pencils but i suppose there has to be a downside considering they are great for not being messy.
@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 2 года назад
I guess once thing you could do is use another charcoal pencil (like generals) for the suuuper dark parts. I agree they are great for not being messy like normal charcoal!

@@AlexisCassandraArt - that’s exactly what i do, i use a “primo elite grande 5000” pencil which is the darkest i’ve found and once i’ve got an even layer down i’ll sandpaper some extra into a small amount of water and mix it well. Then i’ll get the excess water off the brush and slowly go over the black, once dry it’s pretty much jet black if the tooth of the paper can handle the heaviness.
