Did deer defoliate your beautiful climbing rose? Or you had a bad day and trimmed those long canes off? No problem. You can form a new main cane with the help of a strong lateral stem. Here I am showing you how to do it. Happy gardening!

Thank you so much! I am in rose heaven now! My Don Juan lives on! He is very new and I’ve not any blooms yet. Perhaps I stunted… but now I know exactly what to do. I was super excited when I saw this video. God bless you!

Don’t worry, the rose will take care. Only take a little bit time. Sometimes you can use it as a technic to create more branches. It can help to slow down the growth of the rose, cause you divide the growth. If you bend them horizontally, they will bloom.

I moved into a house in the Spring 6 years ago and didn’t realize how many roses were on the property because previous owners cut down to hide them. I have them growing up and out of huge hydrangea shrubs; which makes me believe that they were planted to close originally. I also have them coming up on walkway by front door and this past summer cut them way back and left 2 leaders…the canes look like yours but have burgundy/white center with yellow ring around the white center: have no clue on what any of the roses are or how to take care of them. The neighbor showed me a picture of our back yard from 9 years ago from a bbq party and there was a huge beautiful octagon pergola with the roses growing beautifully on 5 sides….they didn’t want to replace the pergola since they were moving so they removed it and cut most of the roses down but they’ve been popping up everywhere so I think there was trellises throughout at one time. I feel at a loss what to do.

I never really thought about the fact that the rose I cut way back was actually a climber. Maybe the reason why it probably didn't bloom this yr.? Plus the J beetles feasted on it for months. Thanks again for the informative video.

How do I know which stem is a main stem? Do you fertilize in spring and fall before winter? Love your videos Olga ❤

I made a video about main stems and lateral stems, check it out. It is right here - studio.ru-vid.comhlGuX5PByHc/edit

Thank you for this video! What happens if you instead cut the cane back to the ground? Is that ever a good option or should it be avoided?

Thanks for answering my question so throughly! I have high hopes for my generous gardener next year using this technique. Can you tell me about crossing canes as well? Should I prevent it from happening? I have 3 climbing roses on a trellis - left, right, and center.... the center climbing rose has canes crossing the other two roses. Suggestions?

You are welcome! Yes, prevent crossing canes as much as possible.

Do you prune back to the main cane all the last year laterals that grow from the main cane in the spring and then bloom. Do you remove all last year laterals before (winter) the new spring growth starts?

Thank you for answering my question. So, you said that after 3 years or so, you remove the main cane at the ground. Has another already formed from the base, or does one wait for the new cane to form, to tie up horizontally? Thanks again.
