Her version of Rose is original, vulnerable, and believable. "Rose's Turn" (for me) is a moment of defeat, not triumph - that's why I find Bernadette's (like Lansbury's and Lavin's) take on the character to be realistic. This is the moment where Rose is making a fool of herself in front of an imaginary audience - the ultimate manifestation of a delusion that she could be something more than just an ordinary, albeit gutsy stage mom who is basking in the reflected glory of her daughter's success.
This performance is utterly devastating. But I suspect American audiences didn't want the darkness of Gypsy to be mined. They like a winner, a triumphant ending. They said the same about Imelda Staunton's interpretation. Both are far more interesting than the conventional readings of the role
Believe it or not, my husband and I saw Bernadette Peters Gypsy 13 times!!!! Always front row center!!!!! I was like her point because she always winked at me after she did Together!!!! She invited us backstage after my tenth time seeing her!!!!!! What a doll!!!! Now every show I see her in she says Is that my Tony!!?? Cant wait for Broadway to rise again!!!!!
Bitter, nasty, old queens tore her performance apart, but the truth was that she was phenomenal. Audiences have been terrible to her in the last 17 years. They act like her voice is gone and she's the worst actress ever. It's ridiculous. Truth is, she's still got it!
B cat I agree. I saw her a week ago in concert, and after I heard someone say she was good not great. She was 90 minutes of joy, I dunno why ppl insist to dislike her
@@rgmrtnsee that’s why I didn’t like about her performance it was too angst to the point where I couldn’t sympathize with rose angela Lansbury is the best rose then it’s bernadettte than it’s Imelda
Finally someone sees Rose's Turn in the same way I've always thought of it. The main reason I was so enraptured by her performance is because I thought an actress finally made the choices that made the most sense to me.
Bernadette's take is so original and so incredible. This is more of a breakdown song than the others that I've seen. Plus, the ACTUAL June had said that Bernadette was the one who was most like the real life Rose
@@lolkayleen2757 well ig we don't know if patti beat her because I think June died before she could see it but, but we know up to that point that apparently watching bernadette to the IRL June was like watching her mother onstage
This nearly killed me. Killed me so good. Thank you for posting this. I feel like i was shot right back to 2004 when i saw her do this and it tore everyone in the Shubert Theater to PIECES.
I feel as though that should be the antithesis of Rose's character in all cases. That's the reason why every professionally produced revival of Gypsy has striven to feature a high-profile actress in the role; I think it's done in an effort to show the audience, maybe even on just a subconscious level, just how talented Rose could potentially be had she taken another path in life.
Man I will never understand how the Tonys committee could over look her performance in FOLLIES. Ugh. And she honestly should have the Tony that Catherine Zeta Jones won for A Little Night Music.
I've never interpreted Rose's Turn as anything other than utterly devastating. I'm not familiar with the more traditional, triumphant interpretations. Bernadette's and Imelda Staunton's versions are both entertaining but deeply affecting and profound in their depth
Such a different, sexy interpretation of the character. I love it. It sounds like her voice had pretty much recovered here, too. She got such bad word of mouth at first because of that and it wasn't fair. I always felt Bernadette's Rose could have been a star if she'd been born later and had someone to push her. That's the real tragedy of her Rose.
I love Gypsy, which is one of my favourite musical, and I think Bernadette Peters in the best Rose ever! Iknow that she hasn't the voice of Patti LuPone, but she was so sweet and apparently weak... love her!
This. Everything about this affirms the feelings I had when I saw her in the show at the tender age of 13. I didn't know it then, but it changed me. Bernadette Peters wound up becoming one of the essential parts of who I am, and why I love theatre. This performance is not unlike the one I saw...the passion, the fury, the madness...it's all there, in spades. She really was beyond tremendous in this part, and it still saddens me she didn't get the Tony (which she also deserved for "Folllies")
She lost the tony because she was out a lot in the beginning of the run. Really sick. And the punished her. Who was it that won? Really helped her career.
Mr Moonfall we would be very grateful to know if you have the full audio of this and can share it, enough time has passed to enjoy that record. Hopefully it is possible for all of us who value this performance.
She got a nomination for her performance in the 2003, Are you referring to the 2012 Tony awards? If yes, then I'm with you. I want to b*tch slap all those Tony voters for overlooking BP and Elaine Paige.
