Easy to understand why Rosenthal was world-famous in his day. Magnificent playing, full of grace and style, and a staggering technique. Thank you for this gift.

I love this! It is an utterly crazy stunt from the musical standpoint - but superb piano playing. It outdoes Schulz-Evler, Tausig, Szreter and the others who made virtuoso transcriptions of Johann Strauss. Rosenthal's pupil Poldi Mildner made an excellent disc of the piece. It is truly amazing that Rosenthal could play with this energy at 75 - he really seems to have risen to the occasion.

Fascinating document - I wonder if Ravel ever heard him play this?

Of course in his prime he could play his 'exploding music box' special, as one critic essentially put it, note-perfect! Rosenthal and Alfred Reisenauer were well acquainted and shared many talents between them such as love of and expertise in philosophy and had quite hi-IQ"s plus, both were polymaths. Most sadly Reisenauer was too familiar with the brandy bottle and it got him; one thing not shared by M.R. . : .

Too bad Reisenauer didn't make any discs. His roll (I can't recall the correct terminology) of Liszt's 10th Hungarian Rhapsody is my favorite rendition of that piece.

And I've read that R. and Friedheim would converse in Latin.

If I might recall correctly, a Viennese music critic described maetre Rosenthal's playing of this trade-mark work of his as "a run-wild exploding Viennese music box," or some words closely similar! Ha! Now this would have been during the time of Rosenthal's most powerful and potent era at middle-age. It really must have been very much of something, to have elicited such a critic's comment. This recording of him in his later years compliments of The Magic Key and Bechmesser2 provides to us, I believe, a fine example of what that one of earlier must have been-like. :|:

Rosenthal's excellent Ampico roll of his Carnaval de Vienne would be very close to what Rosenthal would have sounded like, judging from the reviews of his earlier recitals and from his earliest recordings (which were still made very late in his life, unfortunately). Rosenthal also officially recorded the piece several times in different versions. This one is the only live recording we have of Rosenthal playing his own work.

@@j.vonhogen9650 Yes! Only recently I found an original copy, the first of others hopefully. Rosenthal did a fair bit of work for Ampico, and turned out some fine mementos of his art. Someone somewhere really needs to do a deep-treatment biography on him. He and Reisenauer, as I understand probably from their Liszt days, were friends both having similar autre interests such as languages, philosophy and chess. All have forgotten 'the big guy' now, big Al, most sadly. I am working on his bio, and have gathered together considerable material for the project. A quote, as recounted from authority, had him proclaiming about Paderewski thus: "He knows EVERYTHING!! . . . except music!"

the joy of playing ( superbly) by a great master.What a delight that a great colleague sent this to inspire me in my 75th year...shall I get Liebesfreud of Kreisler/Rachmaninoff back in my fingers....?
@carlrichards49
@carlrichards49 7 лет назад
Yes! ... if you can. Good luck with that. Even Bolet's wonderful recorded rendition cannot match Rachmaninoff's, which was, legend has it, recorded in one "take". Incredible.
@Beckmesser2

. Neither Bolet or Rachmaninoff recorded Rosenthal’s “Carnival de Vienna.” What they did record was the Strauss-TAUSIG transcription of “One Only Lives Once.”

how rude to insult Mr.Richards neither of the pianists mentioned would ever stoop to this level!
@carlrichards49
@carlrichards49 7 лет назад
Quite correct. I was referring to the Kreisler/Rachmaninoff Liebesfreud, not Rosenthal's Carnaval de Vienna. I have attempted to play both, and my hat is off to anyone who can.

I can't understand why Horowitz had a negative opinion of Rosenthal. Maybe he was jealous that Rosenthal got to hang out with Liszt at the Villa d'Este in his youth, hearing the master play for hours.
@OzanFabienGuvener
@OzanFabienGuvener 3 года назад
When Horowitz performed at the beginning of his career, Rosenthal was the person who criticized the most. For example, Rosenthal would say he only had the octave technique: "He was octavian but not Cesear". Horowitz, who was trying to build his career, probably didn't forget these. Also, Horowitz praises Sauer, another Liszt student. I think his criticism is his revenge. He also criticized Hofmann, because he was Rachmaninoff's favorite. Some pianists say that Horowitz admires Hofmann at first, I think Horowitz, who has a similar style to Rosenthal, does not criticize very fair when it comes to personal matters.
@pianomaly9859
@pianomaly9859 3 года назад
@@OzanFabienGuvener Yes I remember reading that comment now. That would seem to put the last nail in the coffin of any previous esteem Horowitz might have had for Rosenthal.

Most likely a Baldwin. They sponsored him during this time of celebration. Also accompanying the photograph shown at the end was another with Rosenthal's son, as published. I've no idea if the fellow played or not. . : .

@@jamesmiller4184 - His son? I have never heard of a son of Moriz Rosenthal. Are you sure you got that right? As far as I know, he didn't have children, but of course I'd love to be wrong about this!
