Ryan reads today’s daily meditation and talks to Ross Edgley about his 1,792 mile swim all the way around Great Britain, overriding the innate function of self-preservation to perform feats of endurance, the importance of protecting yourself against becoming too comfortable in life, and more.
Ross Edgley is an extreme adventurer, ultra-marathon sea swimmer and author. He holds multiple world records, but is best known for completing the World’s Longest Staged Sea Swim in 2018 when he became the first person in history to swim 1,792 miles all the way around Great Britain in 157 days. Voted Performance of the Year by the World Open Water Swimming Association, he documented his training, nutrition, theories and strategies and published them in his books titled The World’s Fittest Book (2018) and The Art of Resilience (2020) which both became No.1 Sunday Times Bestsellers and have been translated into several other languages.

Really fascinating! Sometimes I envy how certain Individuals seem to have such singular drive? So to see Ross say that he uses a remote control approach and will switch to whatever works to motivate him that day really resonates with me! Kudos to both! Thanks guys.

Your podcast is invaluable to both me and my 24-year-old son. Thank you. In this interview, you said something about the body being a liar (and some other comments alluding to how it tells us we need to stop or makes us give up when we could have kept going. I experience this VERY differently. MY body has never said (for example) "oh my God, I can't breathe, my legs are on fire, this is too much, this is an acid bath and I still have so much to do (etc. or so on). All these narratives come from the thinking mind. Even pain itself or notions of pleasant or unpleasant, are concepts. My body doesn't conceptualize; intense exertion brings forth intense physical sensations (I am even having to conceptualize a narrative to talk about it at all). Like quick silver, those experiences can get put into interpretations (or misinterpretations). Chris Hinshaw says if you believe a negative thought, it becomes a negative experience. Narratives come from the thinking mind interpreting from a state of aversion or fear - a sense of dread (which is a feeling tone) can get a negative story ascribes to it and if you believe it, that can be the obstacle. Over the years, I have learned to practice quick recognition of these narratives, and then re-anchoring in sensation (without narration) as well as a feeling tone of courage or gratitude - you mentioned smiling and that can help generate a feeling tone that is empowering - LOVE is the most powerful for me. When present fully just in the moment - in stillness without judgement or concepts, the body isn't saying anything at all - it's a refuge. Pushing past that pain barrier - the place where the thinking mind says "I can't" has been a practice for me that I think of as very spiritual. There is no "Me" there - just an awareness and sometimes I see a light - I have heard other people talk about seeing a golden orb. I don't know. I used to describe it as an out of body experience but now see it as being fully in my body without distraction from ego or judgement or greed or aversion. I think of migrating birds. They don't have a judging mind discerning whether their flight hurts or if they are tired, etc. - They just fly. Seems to me humans can have a tendency to think to highly of thought and blame the body rather than have some reverence for it as a mystery we can't understand and ought not try to conquer. It is a powerful ally. Of course, there are valid physical limits that DO stop us - Like a 5,000 pound back squat or, a broken bone or true injury - I would not attempt the former or try to proceed with the latter - a certain element of wisdom and discernment comes into play as well. This likely goes without saying but ... just to be clear.

Another great dialogue! I love that Ross loves everything Ryan says : ) The main takeway for me is when Ross said "resilience is suffering strategically managed." Thank you for sharing. Peace.
