Now that the engine is dismantled, the components must be accurately inspected and measured. This is performed to assess the current condition and determine if the part may be reused. A detailed visual inspection and measurement of the rotary shaft is performed. A piston and matching cylinder are then visually inspected and both are accurately measured to determine there actual size. These dimensions are then used to determine the actual piston to cylinder clearance. During the examination of the other piston a serious fault in the cooling system is discovered.

Rotax Rick The inner mark on the RV shaft is where the RV oil system seal rubbed . PLUG the weep hole like all the 582 Gray Heads were. Then if the oil seal fails it will go to the inner side of the ceramic water pump seal. The ceramic seal is not a directional seal & will work both ways being it uses spring pressure to seal . If the weep hole is sealed you really don't even need the inner seal. I install it but thats the way it works.

Oh dear, you did not recognise that the rotary valve gear helical teeth are on the brass rotary valve gear (4) and not the spur teeth at the end of the rotary valve shaft (3). You were going so well up to there.🤔

Rotax Rick. There is no way to measure a crankshaft to determine it's condition. You can measure the rod clearance & determine if the thrust washer clearance is ok BUT it's the lower rod bearing that fails. The only way to see it's condition is to take the crankshaft apart & inspect the bearing. If it's bad , the bearing cage coating will be gone meaning the rollers are so worn that the cage is rubbing on the rod. Even if they're good, you really can't see how bad the rod itself is worn. It has a very thin layer of super hard metal. Then your into the soft metal & the game is over . The only safe thing to do is replace the crankshaft or completely rebuild it , rods & all like I do.
