In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, continue our visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Rothenburg is a town in the Franconia region of Bavaria. It was a free imperial city from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. During Rothenburg’s height, from around 1100 to 1400, it was an important stop along Europe’s trade routes. It declined after occupation and sacking during the Thirty Years War, which occurred between 1618 and 1648. It is famous for its well-preserved medieval old town and its intact town wall. It is a highlight on the Romantic Road through southern Germany. This video is Part 3 of a series of videos on Rothenburg. In this episode we are going to walk Rothenburg’s town wall. Rothenburg is one of only three towns remaining in Germany that still has a complete, intact, city wall. We will take a look at the wall, its defenses, some of the wall towers, city gates and entrance bastions. This includes the Galgentor or “Gallows Gate,” the Röderturm or Röder tower and the Spitaltor or “hospital gate.”
