Rotherhithe comes from the Anglo Saxon - Rederheia “Landing Place for cattle”.
Shad Thames
Named after "St John at Thames” knights of st John who used to own the area or shad fish which was available in The Thames
At he end of the 19th Century it was the biggest warehouse complex in London.
Tea coffee spices and dried fruit would be wheeled along the iron gangways and it was known as “The lader of London". It is also where John Cleese hung out of a window in A Fish Called Wanda.
Dr Who and Oliver! were also filmed here.
St Saviour’s Dock
In the 18th century docks were so busy that cargoes remained on ships for weeks attracting pirates and if they got caught they would be hanged at this dock
The river at this inlet was called Neckinger after devil’s Neckerchief which was cockney for the noose used for hanging pirates.
This is also where Bill Sykes falls to his death at Jacbs Island in Oliver Twist and Fagin lives with his pickpockets.
Cherry Garden Pier is where boats sounded their horns for Tower Bridge to open.
Samuel Pepys bought cherries for his wife here too and The Fighting Temeraire by Turner was painted from here of a barge being taken to the breakers yard which is discussed by James Bond and Q in Skyfall.
Outside the Angel Pub is the remains of a big manor belonging to Edward iii
The Angel Pub was built by monks of Bermondsey Abbey and has
trap Doors and piles over the river useful for smugglers.
Captain Cook and Pepys drank here and Judge Jeffrys watched executions at execution dock from here.
St Mary’s Rotherhithe Church
Christopher Jones - Mayflower Captain is buried here (unmarked grave)
The Mayflower was the ship that carried Pilgrim Fathers to the New World from here in 1620.
Mayflower rotted beside the Pub and it used to be called the Ship Tavern.
They probably used the ships timbers to rebuild the pub at The Mayflower
It is also the only pub licenced to sell both English and American stamps.
Brunel Engine House housed the machine which pumped out the water from the first underwater thoroughfare in the world. Now a museum tells story of the tunnel.
In 1843 it was constructed by Marc Brunel who showed everyone how to do it after seeing a worm in debtor’s prison - he invented a special shield for digging.
He was French and his wife Sophia escaped the French Revolution after fall of Ropesbierre and was supposed to be executed but escaped. He also disrespected Ropesbierre and was lucky to escape.
He is buried in Kensal Green and his technique is still used today.
The Thames Tunnel was supposed to take traffic but there wasn’t the money to pay for the proper entrances so it was a foot tunnel.
Like everywhere it became popular with thieves and it was sold to the railway.
You can still see the original arches in Rotherhithe Tube station.

Always look forward to your adventures Julian. Here is another Londoner you may or may not know. Nicola white finds treasure at low tide on the banks of the Thames. She makes art work out of her finds and educates with some historical finds.

I love this video. Back in about 1985 I had a girlfriend in Rotherhithe, and later got a job there. This was when it REALLY was down at heel when the docks had closed down, but before all the new housing went up. It was a complete wasteland, and interesting to 'urban' explore (lots of old Southwark Council housing blocks FULL of squatters back then). The Mayflower was a 2-minute walk from where I worked (and 3 minutes from where I lived). I've always loved the Mayflower because it is one of those pubs that never seems to be too busy, and has always been 'quaint'. Joolz didn't mention any of the Scandinavian/Finnish churches that can be found in Rotherhithe which I always found fascinating when I lived there. There are Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian churches/seamans' missions dating back to the time of the docks. It always seemed incongruous that there should be Scandinavian churches in what was then quite a rough part of town.

That brings back memories. The Mayflower was my local while I was studying. I had some great nights there, 25 years ago. Quiz nights and lock-ins. I didn'r know at the time that my father used to go there in the 1970s, when all of the old dock buildings were standing (and mainly derelict). They messed it up with the awful modern chicken coop housing. Typically, the nicest and most valuable places are the old buildings that survived the developers' wrath. Same story almost everywhere. Architects have done more damege to London than the Nazis did in the war.
@Joolzguides
@Joolzguides 6 лет назад
Folks..it looks like I was wrong about Fagin! I stupidly read the blue plaque on the side of the building which claimed Fagin lived there but he lived in Saffron Hill! But I was right about Bill Sykes. Bloomin' SOuthwark council putting up wrong information. I read it and added it in at the last minute!

Many years ago there used to be a film studio opposite St Saviour's Wharfcalled Mill Street Studios which played host to many well known actors, now sadly gone. I had the pleasure of some 1st class lunches at reasonable prices back then. If Joolz had walked round the corner he'd have seen the fire station that was used in the opening credits of the series London's Burning. Also Butler 's wharf was known for its spices, many's the time I'd be typing up documents and the whaft of nutmeg would make its way across the dock. Different times

Wonderful area I know well. Generations of my family lived there & I often walk around soaking up history. They lived in an around Cherry Garden street at turn of the 20th century & census shows that some were "scholars". One became a scientist who helped develop an atomic warhead for USA, another a journalist for London news agency, one worked for American Cable Co in the city, artists & head teacher. Just to prove not every poor family was uneducated. They were also used to happily mixing with all nationalities bc of the proximity to docks.

Dire Straits played their first gig on the estate. A plaque has been placed on the building that some of them lived in. Deptford is rich in history. Among others, Chaucer, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Francis Drake, Christopher Marlowe (who was murdered there and is buried and commemorated in St Nicholas churchyard), Grinling Gibbons, Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn have connections to Deptford.

As a fellow Londoner, born of generations of Londoners (albeit now an ex-pat in Italy) I salute you! I'm over twice a year to stay with my parents and to see my son who moved to London for his job. But I digress. We do a lot of exploring when I'm over. For example, we did this same walk 2 or 3 years ago armed with Google and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food in the Mayflower is good too, to my great surprise, as I thought it had become a tourist attraction. Anyway, what I wanted to ask you is if you know Sands Film Studio (82 St Marychurch St, Rotherhithe)? When we were in the area it was open to visitors (I mean not just to see their shows: we were given a tour of the place and a potted history) and is absolutely fascinating. I know for sure that it's closed now because of the coronavirus emergency and to be frank I don't know if they still do tours anyway, but if they do after all this is over it's worth a visit.

Your information is a bit out fella...The video starts in Shad Thames, SE1 which is Bermondsey not Rotherhithe. Jacobs Island, which featured in Oliver, and St Saviours Dock are also in Bermondsey. Nice to see St.Mary’s church, where I was christened, married, my Mum and Dad married there, also countless other family weddings, christening’s and funerals. My Nan lived dead opposite the church in Adams Gardens Estate. The Mayflower used to be called the Spread Eagle not the Ship. If you walk past the church towards Rotherhithe tunnel you’ll find the Ship pub. I also had my wedding meal in the Mayflower in June 2019...

Very good Jules! Just in regards to the part where you were near tower bridge there's the dock where people were hung... There's a double story house boat? There's some good history about that boat. I've stayed on it, actually. From memory it used to be used by royalty to watch boat races in the Thames. It was then bought up by a family for a song after it was disused for years and left in that place. Message me if you want to know more! 😊

Oh yes! I think I've seen about that on tv. Is it a very high end luxury rental apartment now? Sometimes used for tv and films too.. Or amI thinking of something else?

Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films I'm taking about the barge-type thing that's to camera left around the 1:40-1:50 mark. Once upon a time I had dated someone close to the owner. We sat out on the balcony with the rise and fall of the Thames. You can air bnb it, I believe but you'd not want to be prone to sea sickness, to wouldn't believe how Rocky it is.

Marc Brunel fled France with the technical drawings of the French naval ships .Handed them over to the Admiralty to gain favour from his new country.so we can thank him for aiding Nelson and co in their battles with Napoleon

I watch your videos Joolz, ( subscribed) and for some reason I found this video extremely favourable, perhaps because Rotherhithe was unknown to me, you don't often hear about it do you? Maybe it's also because it reminds me of the lovely old mill developments in places like Leeds, Saltaire?

Oh I'm glad. Perhaps also because it was actually very quick and easy to make this one in comparison to the others. Maybe I was in a good mood that day.

Tower Bridge is owned by the City of London and is insured by Lloyd's of London. Because of Lloyds insuring it, the bridge is licensed as a ship. A ship needs to give notice 24 hours in advance for the bridge to be opened.
