On this video, Joy and I travel down a rough dirt road, way back into the woods of Stewart County, Georgia, to visit the old Irena Graveyard. This cemetery dates back to the pioneer days as the burial site for Irena Methodist Church. The church eventually moved to the nearby community of Union, leaving the cemetery to be forgotten and lost in the woods.
Burials:
Rufus Allen, born in Fort Valley, Houston Co, GA May 23, 1833. Died in Milledgeville, GA Mar 30, 1902.
"He giveth His beloved sleep"

The Irena Church was built during the pioneer days. The early membership, in part, were Williams, Gillis, Kent, Banks, Delemar, Allen, Cleve-land, Lawson, Mathis, and Streetman, there often being more than one family of the same name. In the 1880's the moving of some of the people to Columbus and other points brought about changes that caused the removal of the Church to Union. Near the old Irena Church site is a cemetery filled with graves of the early settlers. I'm a Neil Gillies from Scotland. A large number of my Gillies's ancestors emigrated from the Morar area of Scotland to Canada and parts of the United States throughout the 1800s. In America the spelling was sometimes changed to 'Gillis'. I'm interested in genealogy and will be very interested to see if I can find out more abour the Gillis's at this graveyard, and where in Scotland they may have come from. You are correct in that these Scots would often write back and forth with their relatives in Scotland about prospects in America. Very interesting indeed - thanks for sharing this video.

So much to love but now a memory of lives long ago. Please dear Lord may their souls be home in heaven. Until next time. Please, take care and stay safe. Love ya 🍺🍺🌹🌞🙏😇👍🌈❤️🕊🇺🇸

I find these graveyards so very interesting, stirring and historical. I love the old stones, the iron fences, the little white crosses are touching. Documenting these resting places is a gift to many. Remembering these lives lived is a gift of love, they wait for us on the other side. We need to know that. Their lives had purpose and so do ours.😊In these changing times,💞from Ky.

I found the Thaddeus Beall Lawson grave interesting. I would be willing to bet without diving into descendants that this male was named for Thaddeus Beall, an American Revolutionary Patriot, who had ties to Hamilton , HarrisCo, and related to the Bealls in the extinct Beallwood area of Talbot County. The Bealls were connected to the land lotteries by the Governor of GA and spread out as they did their work in the lotteries, especially Talbot, Harris, and Muscogee.

That beautiful pond and that beaver dam reminded me of some places in Burlington County, NJ. Just beautiful. But our roads in the middle of nowhere in South Jersey are all sand, or in some cases gravel. And NO logging. All though there are a handful of small sawmills scattered around, that cut a few white cedars now and then. And as for your country roads, I haven't found any country roads here in Virginia yet. Most country roads I've seen so far are state roads. Maybe that's just the way Virginia does things. In that phrase "Suffer the little children...", suffer is an old word for allow. Anyway, what an amazing cemetery out there. Great video.

Seeing the condition of that road, I hope you let someone back home know where you were going in case you get stuck. At least someone could come look for you after not making it home by a certain time. 😉

20:10 It looks like a vase or pedestal. 20:33 Funny, I just can’t picture a two year old named Gertrude! 😬 Hopefully they called her “Gerty” like in E.T.! 21:30 They may have turned in the wrought Iron during WWII?

Wow. The jeep did great. Joy, your camera work was impressive. Robert, you did go on a wee bit about the beavers and the wooden bridge but it was still a beautiful area. I will have to go back and see if you did do an early video on this cemetery. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It was a quiet serene cemetery. Thank you both for showing us this road and cemetery.

I found the beaver talk interesting. We don’t have them here in Australia 🇦🇺 so it’s interesting, thanks Robert ❤😊

@@chriswilford3576 I expect I worded that poorly. It was interesting, we have lots of beavers here in Canada plus one on our nickel, and Robert is always highly entertaining in his delivery.

The dam is why that bridge is sketchy. Otherwise it would be a small flowing stream. They need to capture the beaver relocate it, and knock down the dam.
