I am not a mechanic. This is solely for entertainment purposes :) This video takes you through how I diagnose a rough idle on a 5SFE. Bonus: I also took the liberty to replace the distributor o-ring due to an oil leak on the driver's side.

At 8:56 you can see a crack going right across the top epoxy coating on your coil (just below where your rotor is pointing). It's a really common issue, if you start having intermittent no start but it cranks fine that will be your issue.

My 96 has a no start condition due to the distributor needing to be replaced. Planning on buying a new one off RockAuto. Do you think I'd have to adjust the rotor to match my old one, or just leave it be and install it in??

Match it. Don't take the old one out yet until you have the new one. Then stab it in to match the rotor position.

Had the same issue but with the same car but it turned off and didn't turn back on. The car cranks but there's no spark from new spark plugs I bought. Should I replace the whole distributor?

More than likely yes, sounds like distributor. If you have an ohm meter, follow the online repair manual at turboninja.

I did this and now my distributor is rattling and smoking. Help!!!! what could be the cause???

Check your cap and rotor. Make sure things are put back well.

@@dadaking ok so I put a little oil back in and it did quiet down. I think it was the camshafts with the rattle. But it's fine now.🤞🏿 The smoking: it came from when I changed the valve cover gasket and spilled oil all on the exhaust manifold, etc.. Now about the still leaky distributor: That orange fell pro didn't do jack. Lol. (Looks like it made it leak worse.) I'm thinking to do the toyota o ring. It was black and seemed to be thicker, even tho you can still tell it was worn out. Thanks for the response sir. 👍🏿

Oil inside the dizzy means the internal O ring is faulty!😊

Figured that out weeks later. I ultimately replaced the whole distributor :)

You can clearly see burn marks on the dist. rotor where it gets its signal from the cap. Dude "PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE" you replace these parts BEFORE you get stranded somewhere 🙄
