Rough Lake Crossing for a Small Sailboat: 16ft O'day Ospray Daysailer

The return trip following an overnight adventure to LBL. I have done most of my sailing on relatively flat, protected waters (and I prefer to stick to those conditions lol). These waves felt huge! More experienced sailors may not be impressed, but for Kentucky Lake, these are rough seas. The south wind blows directly down the length of the lake, generating much larger waves than the NE/E winds I am accustomed to. It was a bit unnerving, but Brigit pulled through! She is a 1960 O'day Ospray (similar to O'day Daysailer).

Looks like a nice adventure. I’m enjoying my 1965 ODay Ospray. They are fun little boats

What a great adventure! In strong wind I often leave the jib down as well on my 14’ ODay javellin. It’s really cool to see you camping and adventuring on a small craft.

I'm a fan of the Javelin. Owned one briefly. Just taking the jib down is often an effective and simple solution. I really need to add reef points/jiffy reefing for next year.

I solo a Buccaneer 18 which is a two or three-man racer/daysailer depending on if you want to fly a spinaker. It carries a lot of sail for its weight. I use a hank-on jib, so its either up or down. If I'm not much overpowered I can luff the jib. When I'm in heavy gusts I set the jib tighter than the main and luff the main, depowering the forward half of the sail, or totally depowering it if necessary. When I do that it's good to still have the jib locked in and working to keep the boat moving. You are lucky to live near such a large lake. I sail on a medium sized lake at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Steady winds are a rarity.

I have a 73’ Javelin and I enjoy camping from it and longer day sails, planning to build something more suited to the evening or afternoon sails I get time for more often.

"felt like I'd been out for a week," yeah, that's a heavy-air vibe for sure. I did a 4.5hr crossing of Lake Ontario in a Tanzer 22 with big swells and 15knot winds out of the Northeast and it felt like I'd been at sea for ages. I wish I'd been there for this one. An unballasted boat handles much better in heavy air with crew on the rail, and it's a lot easier to take, mentally, when there's someone going, "Wahoo! This is great! Let's SEND IT!" I've been in exactly the same place with my CL-14. Alone, it's worrying and stressful. With a couple gnarly dudes, it's thrilling and fun.

Extra crew makes higher winds a lot of fun. Solo you are on a knife's edge.

It seems like you’re proving that your sailboat is well equipped to handle some snotty weather. Reminds me of a Dolphin 17 I once had. She was a great boat. I’m impressed with your new addition to your fleet, commodore. Cheers.

There's something about this hull design. It feels like a much bigger boat in many ways. Very mild mannered. I see those Dolphin 17's for sale occasionally.

I often sail without the jib on my 16 foot dinghy. I also never cleat the main sheet. Good video! 🙂

Wise decision never cleating the main. I've learned my lesson on that one lol. A near flat calm followed by a very sharp sudden gust. I wouldn't say capsize was imminent, but the boat was completely out of control for about 5 seconds. I knew better, but know I have the experiential knowledge haha.

Cleating the main (assuming the quick-release clam cleats as installed from the factory [1]) is perfectly safe. In fact, doing so eliminates the novice tendency to excessively trim the main in an attempt to balance the boat. Except in crowded conditions, the DS tracks that well that-except in the most variable wind conditions-you should be able to set your course, set your sails to that course and then cleat up and relax. If you’ve trimmed correctly, virtually no sail trimming is required and the tiller will have little to no ‘helm’. You should be able to release the tiller and the DS will track true. This is the _art_ of sailing, and the DS is an admirable boat on which to learn that art. Rev. 1. At 9:16 it is evident on the trailing edge of the centreboard box that an open base cleat (search _open base boat cleat_) is installed. This should be removed and a quick-release cam cleat (viz. sunfishdirect.com/store/image/cache/data/products/SUN-91063-625x625.jpg) installed. Some Fiberglas work would be necessary. This allows the main to be cleated and also instantly released by snatching the main sheet up out of the cams if required. I highly recommend this modification as the temptation to cleat the main on the existing cleat is simply too great, but there are occasions where the main needs to be cleated, or convenience dictates.

FYI; I sail my Capee it’s short but I use a little Sunfish for the stand up 2 person paddle board. I use the rutter only when I need or want
