Rough Shooting for Pheasants and Partridges

This week I am back out in the sugar beet fields of Cambridgeshire hunting for pheasants and french partridges. I opted to work Percy all day and although I am still struggling with the after effects of covid I had a great day and the little dog worked his socks off. I was especially pleased with his last retrieve as picking partridges in sugar beet is a real test for the dogs, still a bit of work to do on his steadiness although he was rock solid on the hares he flushed.

Like all real hunting days, highlights where we are incredibly proud of our dogs and a notebook of things to work on, enjoyed the video very much and hoping you get back to full health soon, cheers Howie

Thanks Howie, you are quite right and it is very noticeable when you spend more time on training a pup and not keeping on top of the older dogs. Feeling better today and looking forward to getting out again on Saturday. Cheers Nick

Covid had me winded for what felt like a year. You'll get through it, enjoyed the video thanks.

Nice video nick, would love to see a video on stopping the dogs from running in,I've got a cocker that does it and it's really embarrassing 😂

Top dog handling. Especially getting him to stop from chasing hares. Also holding him on other downed birds. 👍

Thank you…he was really tired at the end and Percy did well to stick at trying to find that partridge…it’s those little things that make my day. Cheers Nick

Nice Vid Nick, I recon you should try doing a voice over as narrating on the move getting puffed out trying to film is taking your concentration, I have been rough shooting for 50 years so started at 12 with Dad, and snap shooting you need to be on the ball knowing where the other people are and the dog. Then you miss and get pessed off. Your dogs are a credit to you.

Thanks for your comments...I understand what you are suggesting but under normal circumstances I manage and I think (hope) it adds to the feeling of the day...not my heavy breathing! I am beginning to feel back to normal so hopefully I will have a better day on Saturday. Cheers NIck

Nick the shot at 4:20 looks like Percy was starting to run in? I've noticed when beating my cocker will stop to flush but when rough shooting and I shoot the bird myself he runs in. Any tips on how to stop it? Lovely work though and a great retrieve at the end

You are right ! It is a habit that has formed recently and I think it is because I have used him dogging in and beating and not insisting he stops to each flush. I am working on it during the week and we will get on top of it. In your case I suspect that your dog has learnt tat when you shoot he always gets the retrieve and that is what he is anticipating. If you can I would go out with your gun and dog and set up some scenarios where he is hunting and you take a shot into the air, if he moves take him back and make him sit, if you have a dummy launcher you could use this as well but don't let him have the retrieve. If I get a chance I will do a video to show how I am reminding Percy of what he should be doing. Cheers Nick
