I have something special to share today. I've been working on a project for the past couple of months. While going through some of my grandparents' old belongings after they passed away, I came across the "Memoirs of Dorothy McBrayer," who was my grandmother. She was my grandfather's second wife, so we weren't directly related by blood, but she was the only grandmother I ever knew. She had a fascinating story: she grew up in Kentucky in a very poor family and didn't even have shoes until she was 14. Somehow, she made her way to Hollywood. I wasn't old enough to ask her about it, so I'm not completely clear on how she did it, but she became one of the top secretaries at a major Hollywood studio. My grandfather, a professional golfer, met her there after his first wife had passed away. I don't know much about her childhood or her family in Kentucky; we never really spoke about it. However, her Memoirs are very interesting. She had a passion for India and always wanted to go there. She titled these Memoirs "My Trip Around the World," mostly focusing on her time in India. It's written like her own diary just so she could remember all these special moments. I found a photo album alongside the Memoirs with pictures from her time in India, as well as from her days in Hollywood, goofing around with friends from the silent picture era. There are some familiar faces in those pictures from the silent films, but it's all from a time before I was born, so I don't know exactly who's who. I am including those pictures with the Memoirs, not in chronological order but just so you can get a sense of who she was and the life she lived. The album contains some lovely photos of her in India with her friends, visiting castles, and having lunch at the Taj Mahal. I'm also including scans of the actual typewritten Memoirs from 1937-1938!
I had a talented friend of mine, who has a beautiful voice, read the Memoirs and we created an audio recording of it and made that into the video you're about to watch.
