Wondering how to get a round butt? For most men and women, round, firm glutes are seen as more attractive than having a flat, pancake butt. A nice-looking butt isn’t just important for turning heads though. The glutes are a key muscle for athletic performance and keeping them strong can also go a long way to preventing back and hip pain. The problem is, most people approach their glute training the wrong way. 5 mistakes, in particular, that keep them from getting a bubble butt. Before diving into the mistakes preventing you from achieving a bubble butt, let’s first understand the anatomy of the glutes. The glutes are composed of 3 muscles; the gluteus maximus, the gluteus medius, and the gluteus minimus. The gluteus maximus is much larger than the other 2 glutes muscles. It’s actually the largest and heaviest muscle in the human body. It’s also a strong predictor of sprint performance. Since this muscle makes up most of your butt and seems to be the most important region for boosting athletic performance, it only makes sense to make it the focus of your training. But most people fail to do this because of the following 5 mistakes.
The first mistake people make that lock them into a flat, pancake butt has to do with exercise selection. The primary function of the gluteus maximus is hip extension, the movement of driving your hips forward. Most “glute exercises” you’ll find online either don’t train hip extension at all and focus on the smaller glute muscles, or they’ll train hip extension but not in a way that enables you to use heavier and heavier weights over time. The best glute exercises are instead the ones that focus on hip extension and enable you to use heavier weight overtime. Exercises like back squats, leg presses, bulgarian split squats, deadlifts, and hip thrusts. They’re not fancy, but if you use the right form and get really strong with them over time, these will be the key to the glutes growth you're looking for.
The second mistake when most people try to make their glutes rounder is working the quads more than the glutes. In a leg press, if you were to place your feet higher up on the platform and stop each rep once your knees hit 90 degrees, this would enable your shins to stay vertical over the foot throughout and will also involve more hip extension, therefore emphasizing the glutes more than the quads. You can do these one leg at a time as well, and you can also apply this concept to lunges and Bulgarian split squats as well.
Alright so we talked about the quads taking over but in other glutes exercises, the lower back and hamstrings actually have a tendency to take over. Let’s take a look at one of the best exercises for round glutes, the Romanian deadlift. To emphasize the glutes more, you want to use some knee bend. This incorporates more hip extension into the exercise. In addition to this, you should only go down as far as your mobility allows you to. This is the point at which the hips stop moving backward on the way down. So, try to look in the mirror and spot the point where your hips can’t move back, and stop each rep at that point.
Alright so we already covered what some of the best glute exercises are, but the way you program them into your workouts is also very important when it comes to how to get a round butt. You want to include exercises that challenge the glutes in different ways. Bulgarian split squats, back squats, leg presses, and Romanian deadlifts challenge the glutes the most at the bottom position. At the top position however, there’s no tension placed on the glutes. So we’d want to look for an exercise that challenges the muscle when it’s fully shortened. Exercises like the hip thrust and the 45 degree hip extension both do just that. To apply this to your glute focused workouts, pick 1-2 exercises that challenge the glutes most at the bottom position, and then include 1 that challenges the glutes most at the top position.
Finally: although picking the right exercises and performing them correctly will set you up for success, some people (especially those who sit a lot) will still have a hard time activating and feeling their glutes working. One way of improving this is with activation exercises.

I'm the only person who train glutes in my gym, and yes weird looks all the time 👀 but it's worth it... My deadlift, squats and most probably single leg stability have improved quite exponentially as of now.

To answer your question, a nice butt is a nice feature on a guy, but it's not everything (I actually like shoulders the most!). If the guy has a great personality and is working on his internal as much as his external, that's when the real attraction come! ;) Bodies can change; personalities usually don't.

I struggled with my glutes for years until I incorporated sets of sprints into my workouts. Yes, sprints. Sprints form the bedrock my lower body workouts now. People think I squat or deadlift huge weights at the gym. I don't.

For me personally, as a straight cis woman who is attracted to straight cis men, I would say that the butt is definitely a turn on. Tiny butts don't do it for me. Also, big glutes suggests that the person is very good at hip thrusts in the bedroom as well...

I always did 100 squats daily, and sometimes did 300... and my butt was the same, but it was not a problem to me, it just was for workout... then I started in a gym and changed to the press leg (just 12 reps x 3 sets with 80 Kg, I'm skinny ;) ) and now, 4 months later I can sprint faster and longer... my normal pace is quicker too and can run longer without changing my running-training... My butt is also bigger If I had a time-travel machine, I would say to my younger me: do press leg!!!

When I first did rdls I was so confused cause I didn’t feel it, then I just did glute bridges for a few weeks. I recently started doing rdls again omg I feel a huge difference and I am actually seeing a crazy difference now!

I think visually the attractiveness comes from having a small waist in proportion to the glutes. A lot of people have developed or bigger glutes unfortunately that usually comes with big stomachs that take away from the attractiveness of the glutes.

Honestly, these exercises are some of the MOST important. When I was in high school I would not at all workout legs or pretty much anything beneath my torso, and as a result I had a terrible anterior pelvic tilt for years, and a lot of back pain. It took a lot of work to mostly fix it, most of which included these exercises. Lower body is extremely important to not only look better and have better posture, but to feel better and alleviate back pain and pelvic discomfort, so don't skip it!

100% agree. 3 other key reasons to do lower body is that lower body is involved in almost every upper body compound exercise, with some exceptions. So working out your lower body will improve the performance of your upper body. Plus, leg work outs are proven to increase your testosterone, again improving performance. Also lower body tends to be critical in conditioning and cardio exercises. So having a strong, well balanced, lower body that synergizes well, is stable and well conditioned, will greatly benefit your conditioning, stamina, cardio, and even heart health because you can do even more volume of an exercise, and ultimately reap even more gains. Also i really liked what you said about posture. I would put that as my #1 reason, but you already mentioned it. Posture is just so critical, we use it every minute of every day of our entire lives. Having some nice squared hips that supports and balances the body ergonomically with good posture will have probably more impact on your physique and health than almost anything else.

@@masterchief699 Absolutely agree. I think something that's also super important is the mindset of how and why one is at the gym. For me, it's less about packing on a bunch of muscle, and more about just feeling better. Posture like you said, is the foundation and it impacts your workouts too. Too many people worry about building arms or chest, shoulders and abs, and while those are important, they neglect the foundations. It's like putting quality bricks on a water log and building a house on that haha.

Tbh in order to look good or be attractive glutes are not that important in my opinion, if you have overall nice looking upper body and quads/ calves, flat butt won’t be a problem and on the other hand if you have big and round ass without any upper body muscle you’d look soo bad 😂. So in my opinion, the goal should be well balanced physique, no need to give EXTRA importance to any particular body part. Hypertrophy matters.

All you need to do is squats. I do them once a week and girls at work always ask me how I got such a nice butt. Maybe I'm lucky but that's all it takes me. I do do quite heavy squats tho.

The exercise that gave me the best results for glutes is lunges, concentrating on contracting the glute. It is a very uncomfortable exercise for me because it is a weak spot. I notice every time I find a weakness the best exercise for it is always very uncomfortable and takes a lot of will power and effort.

I've been working out for years and always skipped lunges. They were indeed inconfortable and I always was out of balance by the second set. I eventually endes up trying them again a few days ago and my butt has been on fire ever since.

Barbell RDL are so damned glorious. Currently I'm doing 10 sets per week, 250lb x 10 reps to 270x10 depending on how strong I am that day. Usually 5 sets on Monday, 5 sets on Weds. I have really benefitted so much from this.

As a scientist this video is excellent. Great communication, references available, language you used wasn't clickbaity ("this study provided evidence to back this claim" ). etc. It's clear a lot of work went into this, and I didn't check the references but assuming they are okay just have more studies per point if possible to boost data pool. Otherwise really great, this is why you have millions of subscribers!

I definitely am a glute person lol! There is just something about it. Whether a man every once a while wears clothes that show it off or when it makes an appearance in their birthday suit lol. Yes men don't neglect the bum lol. I feel like men care more about their chest, legs, and arms. I could care less what those areas look like as long as a guy can still demonstrate they have some strength. I once dated a man who was very slender and not very muscular outwardly, but he climbed up my 2nd story porch like nothing to help me out. It just shows a guy can be strong without looking ripped. It was sexy. Overall don't neglect the glutes. They are important for various reasons. Ps. Love this video for me. I learned something new.

I've managed to lose my weight and increasing my muscle mass (Since start I weighed around 320lbs with nearly 50% body fat, over the past 2 years since I've found your channel right now I'm at 240lbs with a bit less than 30% body fat). Like PS P said, I do two leg days a week, one focused on hams, the other on quads. With both I mix in some calf and glutes exercises to round out the workouts.

The biggest thing that helped me connect muscle memory with my glutes is "thinking" with my feet. I felt like when I tried to use my glutes I was overthinking it and still using my back muscles but thinking with my feet helped with activation way more.

I have super long femurs and calves compared to my torso and find it so tough to actually feel glute max activation. The only exercise that seems to work is lunges and curstsey lunges for me. I workout from home so use free weights and can’t use a barbell or any machines. How would you encourage someone with my anatomy to approach other exercises to get bigger glutes? I can easily work the min and med... max is so hard to work though... even bridges and hip thrusts work my quads and hamstrings more that glute max...I’ve tried all sorts of stances and foot placement. Help!
