Great breakdown! However, I find this and other tutorials assume the work is always being done by the same person and/or at the same workstation. Would love it if you could describe (or make a video?) detailing exporting an AAF or XML if you’re sending it to DIFFERENT workstation (and colourist) where they need to access their own copy media for themselves while the original editor may continue to work on other aspects of the project (audio, for example). This would specifically cover the consolidating and/or separate project creation and round trip procedures. Right now I find the entire process convoluted and, many time, prone to errors and incorrect exports. In fact, many APP procedures for consolidating don’t appear to do much consolidating at all…often copying loads of extraneous media having nothing to do with the sequence DESPITE the “Exclude unused clips” checkbox being turned on. Again...great job. Very helpful.
@@LUGIGGGGGG I’m using a different work method. I separate out my clips onto different tracks (based on which camera was the source). Then I turn off all the LUTS and export each track one at a time (turning off the ones I’m not exporting). Then I bring them back into Premiere, lay them back up on a new timeline, select all the tracks and auto-sequence the clips. Then I delete the black tracks, and export an XML. I copy the exported, flattened track media and the XML to the colorist’s computer. Ta da! It has proven to be the most reliable way to hand footage over to a colorist.
Man, tks for your work. But you kown how to bring the .xml to Resolve, with the color information from Premiere (Lumetri)? How can I mark the "Use color information" box on the Resolve settings?
Davinci Resolve is probably the best Grading software ever created I love premiere pro, but in terms of color grading specially those corrective lut for each camera, I was so dumbfounded and struggling looking for noise reduction profile for my mavic pro because the flickering and noise are just to noticeable, but then in davinci i color graded it and added a corrective lut from dji and the output was way nicer and the quality was better too, having both of these program are just really a must.
Thank you! We couldn't figure this Premiere Pro export from DaVinci and the Avid AAF fixed our issue. We still have to go back and manually copy and paste all the keyframe effects from premiere to each clip but at least it honours the editing sequence as is!
As of date, XML works fine with the latest CC except that for some reason it wont export audio. So all you get are your video clips on the 'resolved' timeline in CC. AAF more seamless in that sense. Brings in both audio and video. Thanks for the vid tutorial.
I would absolutely love if you did videos on color grading in Da Vinci resolve..from start to finish..you have an amazing channel(probably the best for adobe products)...keep up the good work
Thank you so much for your tutorials. They've made a huge difference in the way I do things. I tried roundtripping some merged clips (recorded audio on a zoom F4) but I think the XML transfer references the original clips and therefore de-syncs (?) the audio. I just needed to key out a bad green screen but had to abandon Resolve and just do it in AE with Keylight etc. I'm a bit of a NOOB but just wondered if my experience seems standard or if I'm missing something. I'm still using CC 2015.
I have a question, so I use proxy media to editing 4K in premiere and when I export it to aff to work in resolve is the file gonna be the original 4K or the proxy media? And after that when I go back to premiere do I get a color graded proxy media or a 4K one? Thanks great video
This doesn’t explain how to do a proper reconform in Premiere in the event I’ve been working with smaller proxy files that also have a ton of effects that need to be preserved, like a bunch of picture in picture effects, for example. In Avid for example, I’m able to do a high-effects edit with low resolution transcodes at 1080p, send an EDL to Resolve whereby all of my selects are colored and then rendered with handles at the original native framerate and aspect ratio. I can then in Avid, “decompose” the offline edit whereby a new sequence is made with unlinked clips, change to a UHD format for finishing, and point the unlinked sequence to the rendered color files, and then voila... I now have a sequence in Avid where every effect and modification is perfectly maintained, not just the in and out points. Can Premiere do that?
A little advice? At what point do you do your color, or rather what effects, resizing, time remapping etc do you leave till you get back into premiere.... ie what does not transfer well?
when I'm importing the AAF file into Premiere Pro CC, it sends message saying "The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened"...I keep having the same problem for a while, even on other computers previously. Every software are updated today. what's the reason?
hopefully you know by now ha! If you import the AAF timeline you should be able to readjust each clips attributes (right click on source files) and you can change the frame rate to whatever is needed. If you interpreted the clips as 24fps in premiere from 120fps source clips you can change it from custom frame rate (by default) back to 24 and the clips should line up in the davinci timeline. Hope that helps!
this all works fine until I got ot replace the original clips wit the graded clips and then the audio is out of sync, even though everyhings in the same position. help please
Great tut. quick question, can you still edit the clips from the RESOLVE sequence? as in make a clip longer or add a premiere pro effect and still retain the RESOLVE grading?
Now that they both work, what you export too will depend largerly on what the original files you're working with are anyway. If you filmed on an ARRI or a Canon then You'll probs be working with MXFs so you'll want to export out of Resolve as MXFs
hello, thanks for the video. I have a timeline I edited with proxies 1280x720. Native files are 4K slog.. In premiere I used effects like crop effects and changed the position. I was thinking about using the method of pre-conform EDL to pass in davinci. So relink in Premiere with native files then export a prores 4444 and import it in Davinci with a preconform EDL. Do I lose a lot of quality doing this?
Why is it that the colors look different from Divinci to Premiere? Pause at 7:57 (your final color grade). Then go to when it's in Premiere 13:17. The shadows are totally washed out. Look at the lines on the guy's shirt. You can hardly make them out in Divinci but you can see everything in Premiere. It is not because the picture is smaller because the same thing is happening to me on my project and I'm having the same problems. Please help.
How does the work flow change when using proxy files? I shoot mainly in 4k and edit with proxy files from media encoder. Typically I keep the file names the same. Then when finished editing, I just move the proxy files. Then reopen premiere, shot it the path to the full res files and I'm done. However this would add files with different names and would have force you to locate each file. Thanks great video.
Really great but what happen if you have to make just a little adjustments to your editing AFTER grading...? As it's "export / import" you have to re-grade your entire timeline in Resovle from zero...?! I don't find any answer to that... Do you have a solution ? Thanks !
I have raw footage. It gives me an fcp error when i try to export an xml from premiere or import xml to premiere. Its a genereic error i rlly need help
