Looking at the Steam page for Slayers X, I love the backstory that supposedly it's a game that the dev started making as a teen in the 90s, rediscovered recently, and decided to go ahead and finish it. I have no idea if this is true. I don't care. That's some grade-A meta lore right there.
That's because it being a spinoff of Hypnospace Outlaw where Zane was that 90s "cool kid" on the internet who absolutely spent his his time between making a webcomic where he's the chosen one to focus on made WADs that led to him making this while listening to his favorite band Seepage.

In the finale, one of the main characters deals with a repressed memory of having witnessed a woman strangle her crying baby (on behalf of a bus full of refugees) in order to avoid detection by the patrolling Chinese. At one point, he misremembers this as a woman strangling only a chicken, hence Civvie's joke about "actually" killing a poop monster.

Throwback FPSes have ascended from "looks like a Doom mod" to "actually IS a Doom mod." I haven't seen it but I'm willing to put money on there being some very specific ZDoom modder names in Beyond Sunset's "special thanks" section because when it comes to making distinctly non-Doom-y features (e.g. double jump and air dash tech) there tends to be a very obvious origin mod that you can point to and go "yeah it's that guy, he made it."
Slayers X is the closest anyone has gotten to a game looking like a 90s shooter. It is SO ugly and immature that it wraps around to being absolutely perfect. I genuinely could be fooled into it being real DOS trash.
Best thing is that the game is actually ton of fun and it really is connected to Hypnospace outlaw, the main character is literally in hypnospace outlaw.

Fun fact: Both Beyond Sunset and Selaco are part of Hellforge Studios, a group of game developers that primarily came out of the doom community. At the moment, 6 of their 8 games are gzdoom games, and that's not even counting Nash's projects. Age of Hell is especially incredible, although I am incapable of beating its demo

I remember playing the Selaco demo and NOT being able to see anything at any time, or feeling like sensory overload and couldn't quite figure out why. I didn't see how insane the particles were, they were coming out of the damn GRASS! That's wild
That shotgun from Slayers X is genuinely some of the most giga-brain design I've seen for a weapon in these kinda games: Making you look at normal breakable scenery as ammo is brilliant. That, and calling it glass sharts makes me giggle every time.
That Slayers X is a more faithful homage to 90s DOS games than any plaid shirt hipster pixel art Lo Fi nonsense I've ever seen. The crusty graphics, the crappy pre rendered 3d models, the fact that everything looks like it was made on KidPix studio, the borderline fetishistic obsession with bodily fluids.... THIS is how you do a 90s.

I've been excited for Fashion Police Squad for a while. It just seems very charming. I just hope it's got more diversity in level styles/aesthetics... The irony if they got that wrong would be palpable.
FPS dev here! No need to fret, the full game has quite a few different environments with level design that switches it up from cramped corridors to open areas etc.
A thing I've heard about Metal: Hellsinger is that it should be safe to record or stream because the developer owns the rights to the songs and they're okay with people making content with their game's music. That said, unsure if I'd grab the game when it comes out but at the very least I want that OST. So, I'll keep an eye out on that.
I dunno man, just because they "own" the music doesn't mean a larger corporation doesn't own them And it only takes one asshole upstairs to prime the copyright bots.

Probably unintentional, but the Cancer Mouse not knowing his dad gag actually fits very well with Slayers X because in Hypnospace Outlaw, Zane Lofton is revealed to not know who his dad is either.

God, I love Selaco and Sunset. Wishing those were released yesterday. I wanna live in the future where these two are patched and full and have expansions and I know every little detail about them because I played them so much but I can't stop.

Slayer X looks too much like an obscure FPS you'd see a Marphitimus Blackimus video on. It should not be possible to reach that level of janky 90's fps accuracy
@@cpi3267 I dunno, I read it in another comment. It does seem like a lot of the assets were actually designed by a teenager in the nineties though, lol. I had visceral flashbacks to that aesthetic. Others mentioned it is possibly the same dev as hypnospace cuz it has the same protagonist and seems to be based on a subplot of that game. I dunno either way, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of it were true. I've seen stuff like this literally doodled in notebooks in the 90s.
Oh I see, the dev goes by the handle of the character to hypnospace. Yeah I think it is a meta reference. Reading more but I get the feeling the devs are the indeed same and this is a tongue in cheek release using much older assets etc. I dunno enough about hypnospace lore to say further, I didn't realize they used the name Zane_rocks that is pretty hilarious. I did get the strong impression this was officially an abandoned project from a while back that got resurrected for the extra crunchy 90s flavor.

Surprised when he was talking about Selaco and that he continued to mention the F.E.A.R. comparisons, he never once mentioned Trepang2 which is a very obvious homage to F.E.A.R. in every sense of the word.

Kind of surprised Civie never checked out Brigand: Oaxaca. Interesting story and gameplay. Has the feeling of a Deus Ex style but in a totally different enviroment
I love that boomer shooter are keep going and still growing! I hope more simple games like these keep getting stronger, instead of the live service games or the corporate companies' DLC/lootboxes

Man, I've been waiting to see how Fasion Police turned out and it doesn't disappoint. It may not be the most extreme game, but I find it oozes originality and is tons of fun to play.
I'm surprised with Civvie. He didn't even mention Trepang2 which is going for a much stronger FEAR vibe than Selaco... or Retchid, a game going for a very strong Doom 3 vibe. Very strange.
@@jareds9863 Don't know what to say except for hard disagree. I personally played both demos and the so called FEAR highlights from CV11 are zoomed in and in slow motion. In normal gameplay you won't see those unless someone tells you about them. I went through the entire Selaco demo and didn't think of FEAR once, enemies just seems out of place and too pixelated compared to the environments, 0 feedback when hit except on death. AI felt like normal Doom AI. Trepang 2 screams FEAR from start to finish.
@@John21WoW It screams FEAR but the setting is generic and it lacks any plot. The combat's solid, and the random survival maps are probably the best you'd ask for. I think it's going to nail FEAR's combat loop yet despite not going for it 100%, Selaco will still feel like the proper FEAR successor by comparison.

selaco even has the enemy soldiers say "shit" like its fear, hilarious. Woah they even react to their own soldiers dying, they sound like the soldiers when they die too, it really is FEAR

I've downloaded the Metal:Hellsinger demo, and... Wow, what a banger. This my have been the first time since my childhood that I played a demo several times to find some new things in the gameplay. I really hope this will be a great game.
