I was 12 years old when Route 66 premiered; quality of television in that era beyond reproach amazing scripts of Sterling S. today junk that passes as "entertainment". I am proud of Route 66, Bonanza, Twlight Zone.today kids have no knowledge of what WE had as children watching every week. My father was with NBC as an executive for 30 years and the account manager for Milton Berle "mr. television: a drunk and an SO.B. Long live Dad and his strength in that time. Roberta Chizzini
So true. I'm the same age as you and I too loved Bonanza, Route 66 and The Twilight Zone. My younger brother and I are watching all of The Twilight Zone on DVD nowadays - one episode every evening, after dinner.
My Dad was supposed to be in one of the scenes, but I never saw him. He would have been 17 at the time, attending Corpus Christi Academy, I think. Even though I never saw him, it was still interesting to watch, knowing he was there somewhere when this was filmed!
This is a Route 66 episode with the opening filed in Corpus Christi. The tall, dark haired guy with the tennis racquet that chases the thief is W B Ray ‘65 graduate and Tx State 4A Singles Tennis champion, the late Scott Doty. Ironically, he was killed not long after this was filmed racing a corvette in downtown Corpus Christi close to the U&I Restaurant.
The Viking Motor Inn Hotel is still there between Corpus Christi and Portland Texas and really hasn't changed much,They really did stay in that hotel while filming 2 episodes, the producer felt the guys could not stay in Corpus Christi because they would be bothered too much.In the end the kids are running toward Portland Texas with Sunset Lake to the right...Yes I remember those days.
I know Corpus, Portland and Ingleside well so this was fun to watch for the scenery. By the way, they have a new bridge under construction right now. I suspect this new "infrastructure" spending is going to erase many old landmarks across this nation.
watching denver Mint episode was same, except they went west from denver and then back to denver - odd -- stephanie powers 60 years ago was so pretty and 20
Yes, Martin Milner died. Route 66 was before my time but I love catching episodes on sleepless nights. aka the wee hours of the morning. Nice that we can find them here. There's always been something about Martin Milner that appealed to me. He was always like the boy next door, except he could be tough when necessary.
I remember as a very young kid, I believed I’d grow up and marry Martin Milner. He was such a believable actor but I think he must have been a really great guy as well.
That was rough! All hard choices. We know that Todd is a free spirit, so he morally wouldn't lead another free spirit into captivity, but they were children! It's profoundly difficult. This show continues to floor me! And guest star Martin Balsam was awesome as usual.
Call me crazy but I even bought the entire DVD set. Just today. 4 seasons. Over 100 dollars! .. Don't mind it's black&white but , wish to see some color SOMETIMES because I like the retro furniture, vintage cars color etc..:)
He was also the 2nd son in "Life With Father" 1947, William Powell and Irene Dunne.! This is quite a treat for me. The series was all over by time I got back from my Navy tour on Guam.
I watched this series...as a 12 year old kid...and loved it then!.. I love it even more...now!.. THAT!.. is good television, folks.. Not like the silliness they mostly have...now.
I was the same age as you and I loved Route 66. There was something about it that appealed to me very much, even at that young age. The shows were all good stories and the excellent acting drew me into them. Also, there were many episodes that appealed to my sentimental nature, even though they were set in the alien world of adults.
I bought a '63 Convertible Vet 18 years ago. Drove it everywhere including Route 66 multiple times. I still have it but can't drive it much due to it's 4spd trans and my replaced hips. I will not sell it due to my childhood fasination with the TV series route 66. It's my full-scale diecast that takes up a car space in my 4 car garage.
Thanks for posting this...I loved Route 66...used to stay up late watching it in reruns as a teenager...great memories finding it here...thanks again🇺🇸
The ending.... was reality. ...Not some 'Hollywood' ending.. Stirling Silliphant was an amzing ...and fast!.. writer.. He wrote at least half of the scripts...maybe more.. And his were always the best.
wow i live about 100 miles or so south of Corpus Christi! I'm going through it tomorrow (stopping for lunch) as a matter of a fact weird i just stumbled upon this episode! The only difference is i drive a mustang! xD
Really enjoyed this episode, hadn't seen it. Martin Balsam, great character actor, had a good role and performance here. I always wanted to do what they were doing.
...no that was...scary ...Like crossing that Bridge ...to NORFOLK...Va...and the San-FRANCISCO-...GOLDEN-GATE-...Bridge...&...GREAT-LAKES ...LAKE-SUPERIOR-...(otherSideOfWisconsin-I-90-)-...Looks Like you''re ...riding on ...Water...scary as ...shit...
...yes ...and more creepy than ...Interstate-I-90...and ''The-Great-Lakes-Looks -Like- you''re ...riding right On The ...Water''...and people Actually Built their HOMES ...off in the ...Water''...w.t.f.-''
I am so sad... I grew up watching Adam 12 and recently watched every episode on netflix with my kids who at first thought it was corny then fell in love with it, we watched one episode each night and eventually made it through the entire series. RIP Martin...
Some actors are fortunate to have one series become a classic. In Martin Milner's case, he was in two, Route 66 and Adam-12. He was one of the reasons I got into law enforcement.
Will not forget this one. Some buddies and I were at the Boys's Club (?) downtown Corpus Christi one day and someone came running in and said that filming for this episode was going on down the street. Sure enough, we ran outside and saw the Sting Ray and a film crew. My memory (such as it is!) seems to tell me it was a gold one. Can anyone else verify any of this?
@@jamescalifornia2964 My research was that from 1961 and 1962 the Corvettes were 'Jewel-blue' but later in '1962, changed over to fawn-beige because it showed the lighting better for the cameras (all episodes were in B&W). The coves were all the same as the body-colour for the same reason. I loved the series so much that I bought a Jewel-blue '61 Vet with body-colour coves but had to sell that one as my replaced hips made it took hard to use the clutch. I still have my '63 Roadster but it is Riverside-red, not fawn-beige. It's also a 4spd but I have to have at least one car from route 66.
Way way ahead of its time. They based shows on taboo topics in the early 60s like America's involvement in Vietnam, Milner getting slipped LSD in his beer and robert Duvall as a young man hooked on heroin. Balsy writers and producers for the time.
Oh my gosh . This was the most intense episode I ever watched from all the seasons of route 66. I cried my eyes out right after the spanking scene and the boy cried and hugged Todd . Wow that boy needed a Father figure so bad and I related so much to how they both were feeling . I only wish I had kids as I think I would have been a great Father . I am 66 years old now and that is my biggest regret . Such touching episode 😢.
This episode is a perfect example of great storytelling - dialogue, writing, plot, acting, sound, and cinematography. Hard to find this level of craft these days yet Route 66 pulled it off time and time again.
I read today that Martin Milner died. They had mentioned Adam 12 of course, which I liked as a kid, but they also mentioned this show . I was too young to watch it when it was on as I was only 6 when it went off the air and I never saw any reruns. So I came here to check out some episodes. Seems like a good show, but different. .
Arguably one of the most touching episodes of the entire series.....and filmed on location in Corpus Christi, Texas....the home of two of the most beautiful women ever....Eva Longoria and the legendary Selena Quintanilla Perez
+David Maslow Yes, I agree, at least he was in this episode. (He had well over 100 TV appearances, though this is the only one I'm familiar with now, his career having been so long ago.) As another noted, his career ended when he was drafted in into the army. ("Uncle Walt [Disney] had plans for me, but so did Uncle Sam and Uncle Sam won.") He became a Green Beret (How many former child actors can say that!?) and afterwards a police officer for awhile and later a Christian pastor.
I worked in group homes for years Martin Balsams character nails it. So does T.S. you feel for d kids n they can take you for a ride. But stay with it.
Not enough, from a median wage of about $5000/year to a median wage of under $40,000/year(by IRS,BLS,Social Security stats),not keeping up with housing, fuel, utility, medical costs, etc.

I DO remember the 74 embargo and it was CRAZY! I was 15 and worked at a Vickers gas station. bad timing i'd say. THe long lines, people screaming at me for withholding gas from them (hey.. all I did was scrub the oil stains from concrete, mow the lawn and stock shelves... I wasn't even the cashier most of the time!), someone pulled a gun on me because my boss wouldn't sell him less than 4 gallons of gas. i almost forgot about that.
+Andre Noble It is partly due to abandoning traditional story-telling, building up to a great ending. In other words, the plague of naturalistic affectations.
+Andre Noble THANK GOD we don't make something like this anymore. It's STUPID! Bad and slow acting. This is my first episode watching and I'm disappointed. Look at the way he treated the girl at the end. He'll end up being a fucking PUNK!
Mark Richardson LOL! I saw a couple of episodes and that was enough, man. I can't believe my grandparents and parents liked this stuff. I agree that what's on TV nowadays is garbage but there was other TV series back then much better than this one as far as the ones I've been watching on RU-vid.
+ElCid48 Route 66, like The Naked City, from which it was indirectly spun off, was noted for its highly literate scripts and rich characterizations (as in this episode, the most complex characterization I’ve ever seen of a juvenile character on an hour long TV episode). That is doubtlessly why you don’t like it, “man.” You’re a victim of the dumbed-down generation who probably couldn’t find most European countries on a map without names.
"In The Closing Of A Trunk" was shot in Port Aransas. Ruth Roman was the guest star I believe. Try shooting on location like that today! Co$t prohibitive! Instead, "they" try to feed us reality crap.
Yeah, but the audience watches it, avidly. Sometimes the networks give t hem what they go for. You can thank the "dumbing down of America" for the lack of intelligent shows nowadays.
Sad...was hoping for a feel good ending, but life doesn't offer many of those...we just keep running like the two children till we reach our finish lines...
Love is cheap. And Joby had figured that out. He understood that real love requires judging and respect for values. Love that comes just because you were born degrades the essential quality of it.
As a kid all I wanted was love & NOT lied to. I trust NO one because of the lies. I am in bad shape because of the abuse &pain. I cried out for years trying to get help. Now I have given up.
the people who made this and worked on it were stellar. So many went on to larger careers. The writers were smart an the show reflected a smarter America back then as well.
I love all about Route 66 and also drove on parts of it 4-5 times now. My favorite was a road trip between Texas and Vegas (there's a video in my USA playlist). If you have sometime, come on over... I'd love to know your thoughts! :) Cheers!
10:41 “…the Earth and all the other planets will be vaporized….The consequences for anything still living at that time could be catastrophic.” “Could be”?
@@KindCountsDeb3773 Yes I know, I used to live next to it. It just cracks me up to have seen the show in which they came to Oregon City, Oregon which is where I live now. It was real far from Route 66. I've driven by the house they rented a room in on Washington Street. It's now owned by a lady who has been restoring it but she has her hands full. It's a very old, charming house of which there are many in Oregon City in the older sections. We live in the newer area up on the bluff where back then in 1962 was all Hazel Nut tree orchards. We live in the Hazel Grove subdivision. The running joke is that there are more nuts in the neighborhood now than there were on the trees back then.
The television show stated that the Sun may pass through a Nova Stage where it will explode in a supernova, at 10:31. This is incorrect as the Sun lacks enough mass to pass into that stage, absolutely.
