The bit should be fully inserted into the collet and then backed off just a tiny bit. The idea is to get the cutting surfaces closer to the router for stability and safety. This is more important on smaller router bits, like ¼" and ⅜" The reason for backing it off is because on some collets (mostly older ones) you need to have a little bit of space, to press in on the bit after loosening the nut, to release it. Most newer collets don't require the space. When you loosen the nut and it seems to get tight again, that's doing what pressing the bit in used to do.

I really like your style because you take time to fully explain something at a speed that allows for comprehension to sink in. I had ordered a Freud round nose bit to try some sign making. After I watched this video, I cancelled that order and ordered an Amana 60 deg end mill. I have made some furniture and pic frames, but never tried signs. I just got a new Ryobi battery powered router. I still have a Hitachi in a table set up and a PC 100 corded trim router. I do a lot of pen turning now and am mostly sticking to small projects rather than a murphy bed :) I subscribed to this channel. Thanks so much for sharing you experience and knowledge with us. Agreed. Problem with only putting it in 1/4" is the shank can break if the bit is not balanced or has side force put on it. Much less likely to happen if it's placed as you say.

I just got a router a few days ago and I was not aware that one could make signs with them. However I had no idea on what bits one would use and as such I went looking on RU-vid for info and found your very informative video. Now I know what bit to use and how much depth or height to set the bits at.. From all of the videos on here on how to insert bit they all have one pushing it all the way in and then lifting it out about an 1/8 of an inch. It looks like you pulled yours out almost have way up the shank and that surprised me as I assumed that is dangerous.

A note on H&S in my shop... i) Router bits should be inserted to the depth of the collet grips - usually 20mm (3/4"). Take the collet apart to see the grip depth. ii) Anybody in my shop not wearing eye protectors when routing is instantly dismissed. iii )Anybody changing a bit without pulling the mains plug or removing the battery is instantly dismissed.

Enjoyed your video very much. Very informative. But I have a question. I am going to engrave into a 4x4 cedar beam a memorial monument. Just the name and dates. What would be your recommendation for depth and bits to use. Also to paint the letters to be legible??? Your input and help is very appreciative. Thanks in advance.
@woodworkingbylpi
@woodworkingbylpi 3 года назад
Thank you for visiting! Test your design on another piece of wood to see if there are any changes your want to make and/or adjust. I would recommend you start with a 1/8 depth to ensure your design is good and then go down to a 1/4 depth. Going slowly with the depth allows for you to look at your work as you go and make adjustments. A 60 degree bit would work very well. As far as paint, I would suggest applying a sanding sealer first. This will keep the paint from bleeding in the wood. Then I would recommend Rust-Oleum black primer and sand off over the lettering. As mentioned before test on a separate piece to ensure it will work as you want. Hope this helps!

That is great! There are all kinds of ideas for signs you can make. If I may suggest, start with something small and grow. Local businesses and community gatherings are great for starting also. Search for ideas you would like to do and would get you visibility. Another great place to search for ideas would be online, such as Etsy. Search for wood signs and items for ideas to sell. The best advertisement is your clients telling other folks of your great work! Best of luck to you and your wood signs!

what about carving line bit and profile bits? I see that they are used a lot on carved wood signs. Also what should be the max diameter/lenght straight bit to use on a palm router?
@woodworkingbylpi
@woodworkingbylpi 2 года назад
Thank you for watching! The carving liner bit is great and used for extreme detail work and carving (1/4 inch diameter). I have used the carving liner bit, but don't recommend carving very deep with it as you may break the tip. The profile bit (1/4 inch diameter) comes in many different angles on the cutting end, for example, 60 degrees and 90 degrees. I use the 60 degrees for about 99 percent of my cuts. They vary in length 2 1/2 to 3 inches approximately. To the best of my knowledge, a typical palm router will only use a max of 1/4 inch bit (diameter). If you wanted to use a 1/2 inch bit (diameter) you would need a bigger router that has a collet that accepts a 1/2 bit, plus you would need the router with power to use it. Hope this helps!

I’m thinking of starting sign craving. I’m seriously thinking of getting the Dewalt 600 cordless router but olddaves channel said it wasn’t that good for sign carving due to battery life he suggested the corded 611 granted he did only have a 2 amp battery . I would prefer cordless so what are your thoughts would it be good with a bigger battery or should I get the corded 611? Thank you!
@woodworkingbylpi
@woodworkingbylpi 3 года назад
Thank you for visiting! I do have both of them and they both are very good routers. With regard to the corded it will carve very well for you and has plenty of power, I have used it for both manual carving and I also use them on my CNC's. With regard to the cordless it does an excellent job as well. Completely agree with Dave on the power however, I mostly use my cordless for edging and minor carving and it does run out of battery life using the standard battery after a while. I have used the bigger batteries 5 AH and the Flexvolt with the cordless with great success and it does last longer. The only concern I would mention is the weight it adds to the top of the router when carving. If you are comfortable using with a little extra weight on the top due to the battery I would recommend the cordless. I hope this helps!
@mikelake662
@mikelake662 3 года назад
@@woodworkingbylpi Awesome!!! I think I’ll try at least a 5amp battery if not a flexvolt. How long do you think the runtime would be then? Respectfully disagree with your 1/4 " in on the shank. Most quality bits have marks on the shank that are at the most 1/4 " from the beginning of the cutter edges, more like 1/8" from the beginning of the cutter. Your collet is ~7/8" long and the bit shaft should be at least protruding out the back end of the collet. At your depth you are gripping with only 2 of the 4 flutes. The router shaft is tapered in and is what squeezes the collet flutes in on the bit shank as you tighten the nut.

I enjoyed your video but I wish you would wear eye protection at least on a video.

You lost me when you did not wear eye protection while using the router. Your showing beginners and not demonstrating best safety practices . Shame on you. No true professional would do such a thing.

I am sure that you have interesting things to say, but I am 7 minutes into your video and getting weary of your waffling. You repeat yourself and say a lot without saying anything. Practice before you do a video.
