Just the final approach over winter wonderland and landing on runway 03 and taxiing on snow covered taxiways at Rovaniemi (RVN / EFRO) airport, the capital of Lapland in northern Finland. Rovaniemi is the "official" hometown of Santa Claus.
Cockpit, pilots, charts, PFD (primary flight display) and ND (navigation display) view. With cockpit audio. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 9270 (Eurowings Niner Two Seven Zero). Produced with 6 cameras in 4k quality. Airplane registration: D-ABNU

Question for u Captain. U asked you copilot to check VLS in short final and adjust the speed. What does it mean ?

We compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. The PFD VLS is calculated on the basis of aerodynamic data (angle of attack) and our entered CG. The MCDU VLS is calculated on the basis of the Zero Fuel Weight from the loadsheet plus the current fuel load. If the PFD VLS is higher, we add the difference to the approach speed in the MCDU.

Superb landing. Taxi on snow and ice must be a delicate operation. I could barely make out which taxiway you're on. Merry Christmas to you.

As we do not want to skid on the taxiway or the apron, we have to taxi very carefully, especially in turns. Sometimes 1 or 2 knots is the maximum speed for that.

Yeah there are only a few Planes with those Screens that eurowings operates since their fleet is quite new

Most of the planes are very new with the flat screens. Just a few have the CRT screens. During the day, I prefer the new screens. They even have a better resolution. For example, the CRTs cannot show the ILS ident and the mach number in parallel on the PFD. Recording of the old CRT screen is somehow difficult due to the very odd framerate.

There are several airports which I like very much. Examples are: Palma de Mallorca, Santorini, Samos, Funchal, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Las Vegas, Naples ….

Are you able to explain what the “VLS check” entails and why sometimes the speed needs changing (and sometimes not)?

On older Airbus the VLS display on the PFD comes from aerodynamic data and on the MCDU it comes from the calculated gross weight entered by the pilots. Therefore there can be a slight difference in readings so you go off the aerodynamic data and if say PFD is reading 140 but MCDU says 138 then you would add 2 knots in the MCDU VAPP speed. On newer models the VLS on both PFD and MCDU comes from the calculated gross weight in the MCDU so they should match all the time

@@11clarkm only if there is a headwind. Even if there is 0 wind you always land at VAPP which is VLS +5 so to ensure you fly VAPP you need to check you have correct VLS

@@11clarkm as minimum yes. But like I said newer CEO and pretty sure all NEO now use just the MCDU GW as the VLS source so shouldn’t have to modify it

A few older planes still have the CRTs. It is always difficult to record them because of their odd frequency. In the dark, they are very good readable. In the bright sun, I prefer the new displays. Also, the new displays provide a higher resolution.
