From the 1998 Top Gear Motor Show special, the newly launched Rover 75 and Jaguar S-Type are featured by Jeremy Clarkson and Quentin Willson, who talk to designers Geoff Upex, Richard Woolley, Wyn Thomas and Geoff Lawson.
Rover 75: Amazing car, VIP Class, Quality, Awesome design, Elegant British Senior. Rover 75 is the second on my list of amazing design cars after Bentley Cont.
Anyone who hates the 75 really has a problem!! Let me question: why??? Tell me good reasons. It is a desirable and lovely car, just look at it!! Even in 2012 this looks fabolous!
It was in 2003 that they dropped the real wood dashboard. MG-Rover was in desperate need of money. So they came with "project drive" to save money on production.
I absolutely love my 75 CDTI auto in Copperleaf red. Style, finesse, comfort, and quite possibly one of the best looking cars ever made. Well, the Italians reckoned it is, and that's good enough for me. It's simply superb. All hail the Rover 75.
Same here - mine is the Tourer also in Copperleaf. It's my third 75 in 6 years (if you count my 2-year love affair with an ultra low-mileage MG ZT...) and I can't add anything to your comment. I ❤️ my 75.
Proud owner sinds 5 years of a 2000 built 75 1.8 Connoseur . Lovely car in Arden green with Sandstone leather , rustfree and running smooth and silent . My " secret " about the " horrible " big K ? Weekly coolantlevel check and top up if nessesary . Really ! It's that simple . Great thanks to Richard Woolley for drawing such a masterpiece .
This was where Rover and Jaguar fell down looking at nostigia in there cars as the "Britishness" to them.. Unlike the latest Jaguars which are at last not looking to the past.. But look like saloon tourer Astons..and with beautiful finishing touches like the electric pop up air vents on start up!Lovely touch!!
@capitalsho . People talk nonsense about Rover 75 out of ignorance and jealousy. people like me who own one will tell you it is a superb car. It is powerful and fast as well as luxurious. it is a head turner. The only side effect: some people will hate you for having one.
@capitalsho I have a Rover 75 1.8 and find it perfectly suited for me, have had the car for over 5 years, and regular servicing and coolant changes, no issues at all. As far as performance is concerned, it's the equal of say the non-turbo 1.8s of other manufacturors, and is quite economical on fuel. I am very happy with mine.
Had a good look at the 2.0 cdt se tourer yesterday on an 02 plate for £2300, So comfortable and a really nice place to be. All the switches an buttons are easy to reach and amazingly light power steering. On the plus side i am a bit short so had to move the seat forward improving rear leg room.
Rover 75 (not the 1.8's) are better than the Jaguar X-Type but not quite on a par with the S-Type. I've had my Rover 75 Tourer cdti connoissuer for 2 years and it is just such a bloody good car. It has a BMW engine and it feels like your in a Rolls Royce it's so quiet and smooth. Don't take my word for it listen to Clarkson! If your buying a second hand car and looking for luxury and reliability with great retro chrome splashed looks this is your car.
I'm not keen on small cars and i want one thats british. I have sat in one and it was a really nice place to be, very luxurious and i like the style of this car. Yes it does have issues but what car does'nt. Its best to get a list of possible faults and check when buying if these have been noticed and or adressed.
Great car......... great looks.....BMW diesel. Interiour makes you feel like 007....People (even new BMW, Mercedes owners) stare at the car. Looks very expensive, you buy them for very little money....Hope part wil be there for the rest of my years......
Guys on Old TG Jeremy seems to like cars on merit, but he likes them on image on the new one. He likes the 75 styling, but doesn't like the OAP clientele a few years later.
I'm British and proud of it is the impression I get from the rover love rovers broke my heart to let my grandma's 400 gsi go and replace it with a brand new s40 in 2009 love volvo now just replaced the s40 with v40 cross contry what a bag of shit the faults breaking down electric failor it was only 1 month old still love them though 2 years and be getting a xc70. when I learn to drive in 5 years it's a volvo or rover top of the list my dad said I'm 11 and should love mersadees and bmw no not me I'm just simple and old fashioned 😊
I have had both of these cars and extensively worked on them as I have never trusted anyone else to carry out servicing or repairs. I have to say that at low mileage my (14K) the 1.8ltr Rover 75 is displayed a fundamental flaw with regard to the engine design causing a head gasket problem which is expensive to repair (if done right) but can be done with a Feelander gasket kit, Crankshaft block nut replacement and a mod to the thermostat setup. My Jag S type 2.5ltr has done 270K and has had engine ancillary and non engine repairs such as water pump, Oil cooler, heater control valve and Spark plug replacements oh and door winder problems otherwise great. Conclusion Jag 2.5 excellent Rover 1.8 engine crap! Good Luck
If it's not too late after 11 years🤣, it means the Lighting Control Module has had a used replacement but the encoded VIN has not been changed. It requires a software tweak using either T4 or TOAF. TOAF is downloadable, free, and easy to use.
Yes, car is gorgeous inside. But there is one thing. I am from Slovenia and if something brokes down, I will have problems about parts because they are expencive. So that way I am having second thoughts.
@reilly972008 yeah thats a bit true but its still a great car. i ever wanted to buy a jaguar but they are too expensive. so i bought a rover 75 which looks great and is pretty cheap.
😰😰 Sad times Jaguar has always made nicer Cars So did Rover The 75 & S-Type were so nice looking and creamy and woodtriming and Luxurious But what was sad was 1. Rover shut down in 2005 to become a chinese company 2. Jaguar is now planning to become a fully electric brand with Land Rover by 2025 I do love the Jaguar's cars their models were cool which were XF , XJ , XK , XE , X-Type , S-Type , F-Type and the F Pace those were the ones i liked. Now well shall see whats jaguars gonna make in the future.
Good that BMW didnt designed a Beer-Holder and a Pretzel-Baker in the Glovebox and finished it up with leathertrouses seats... because the Rover likes like a british clishee, and so does the Jag, they looking like the driver eats some After Eight and drinks Tea, by looking at a picture of the Queen....
I wana believe you. But the 75 stoped in the middle of the road for about 3 times during 4 years. Batteries run out without any alert, dynamo damaged once. For some reason tires get punctured for nothing, I fixed them over 8 times and replaced 1. The window stopped working 2 times. The suspension fixed 2 times and still not mint. Cup holder damaged because of normal usage. The brakes produces a laud metallic sound on a hard press. I finally got me a BMW.
@reilly972008 : what a crap! the Jag and the Rover are totally differen, and besides that, the Rover was designed before the jag. One can say, the jag is a copy of the Rover. and what about "poor": it's a fact that the Rover has lots of luxury, who cares about the oprice? However did you ever drive a Rover 75?
The S-Type was Ford's big failure, it was a sort of American reimagining, of how it saw what a British car with wood and leather should be like, which failed along with the laughable X-Type which was basically 'a Ford Mondeo in drag' that everyone laughed at. Anything Ford seems to touch, turned to 💩.
It wasn't just a brief fad it was like sharp angles were the 80s it was the style of the late 90s to the mid 00s remember the hhr, or the ssr, the s type, xk8, x type, or cruiser, Plymouth prowler, ford mustang, etc
