Rowan Atkinson is unlike most comedians. Comedians are funny first and base their acting on their humor only. Rowan, on the other hand, was a great actor who happened to be good at making people laugh. This video is perfect evidence of this.
very well said, I just found out that it just exactly like you said, he is great actor, very intelligent and funny at the same time, a rare artist could probably does the same way like he does
"To criticize a person for their race is manifestly irrational and ridiculous, but to criticize their religion, that is a right, that is a freedom. The freedom to criticize ideas, any ideas - even if they are sincerely held beliefs - is one of the fundamental freedoms of society." -Rowan Atkinson
The way he delivered the line: "Sometimes all it takes is a little grace. A little of God's grace... And all our problems seem to fade away." His facial expressions, his delivery, the lighting, the audience's confused faces, and the soft background music. Goosebumps!
i bet if he searched his ancestory he would find he is also Heyoka such as robin williams (murdered), george carlin, "fluffy", etc. geaorge carlin wasnt a comedian, he was funny but he just spit truth "america is a club and we aint invited" and WE laughed, he smiled. robin williams/"fluffy" like to connect deep... mr atkinson also advocates for freedom. made a public statement about some bs law that gags freedoms... it was like 10 minutes long and so eloquent he looked like a valedictorian ... hes like the english robin williams lol
Just goes to show the man has the best acting chops. A lot of his personal opinions fly in the face of Anglicanism, yet he can pull off playing what appears to be an inspired vicar. This is why he's such a treasure.
When Rowan blanks out after he said "a little of God's grace" and continues with "and all of our problems seem to fade away" Hits me right in the chest, penetrates the rib cage and right in the heart.
zoe mateo wrote: "When Rowan blanks out after he said 'a little of God's grace' and continues with 'and all of our problems seem to fade away' Hits me right in the chest, penetrates the rib cage and right in the heart." Sometimes that is the best thing to do--like being engaged in a loud, emotionally intense argument (that one was usually drawn into) and suddenly deciding to sit back, relax, and ask, "Is this *really* worth shouting at each other for? Yelling doesn't make any wrong idea right, or a right one wrong."
@@ockins9830 wow i forgot i even saw this video. Can't believe it's been 4 years as well. So thanks ockins because i got to watch this again and reminded of something great. I needed to hear this and the timing couldn't have been better, god really works in mysterious ways.
@@XAMINGOnly😂 wow. Deja vu. Thanks, guess I really needed to hear this again. Can't believe a year has passed since I last saw this, and wow nice to see so many likes to the first comment. 😊 Been a tough year, but finally landed a job at the right place with good people, was hard getting here... still more to go and it's true God works in mysterious ways. This time through you. Thank you for letting me see this again. Truly forgot about this.
Had he not chosen comedy, he would have still been regarded as such an amazing actor. His expressions and the way in which he's able to convey emotions is just otherworldly. He is truly magnificent. I wish I could see a movie of his in which he has to play a more dramatic role
Blackadder is definitely comedy but he plays more serious characters in the second, third and fourth series, not at all the goofy Mr Bean but more of a biting sarcastic person with wicked wit. Hugh Laurie plays the goofy character.
Sometimes, I think it's cruel giving machines a personality. My mate Petersen once bought a pair of shoes with Artificial Intelligence. 'Smart Shoes' they were called. It was a neat idea: no matter how blind drunk you were, they could always get you home. But he got ratted one night in Oslo and woke up the next morning in Burma. You see, the shoes got bored just going from his local to the flat. They wanted to see the world, like, you know. He had a hell of a job getting rid of them. No matter who he sold them to, they'd show up again the next day. He tried to shut them out, but they just kicked the door down, you know. Yeah. Last thing he heard, they'd sort of, erm, robbed a car and drove it into a canal. They couldn't steer, you see. Petersen was really, really blown away about it. He went to see a priest. The priest told him... he said it was alright and all that, like, and that the shoes were happy and that they'd gone to heaven. You see, it turns out shoes have souls.
As a twelve year old kid in the US, watching him as Mr. Bean in the early '90s, I had no clue what an incredible actor Rowan Atkinson was, nor how much talent the man possessed.
it's a massive ability to spellbinding people like this with just correct pauses. More than the words it's his silences which create communication. Brilliant
it's an interesting bit of film from an atheist. Rowan has done many sketches dealing with religion and rarely does he say or do anything overtly mean about it. He will mock religion and clerics etc. but never in a cruel way.
I find it hilarious that people have to say "well coming from an atheists...". Nobody gives a fuck just say your opinion. If someone else said the same thing without admitting he is an atheist it should mean as much.
Flemes They meant that it's interesting seeing Rowan Atkinson play this part... Since HE'S an atheist. They said "It's an interesting but of film FROM an atheist." Not COMING FROM. Chill.
Shane Bowman to be an atheist is to have disbelief in God, not disbelief in religion. His argument doesnt base on the existence of God, instead it is based on the existence of the ways of religion. How it works and how it shouldnt work and sadly how it isnt working as it is to whats happening in the present. He's setting an example, through performances, that would make people see "this is what shouldnt happen", "this is what should have happened" , "however this is whats happenning now". To argue with religion, absolutely doesnt mean to be an atheist. I am not degrading those who are atheists, im simply subjecting that its not right to say that rowan atkinson is an atheist becoz he questions the ways of religion
I understand that Rowan Atkinson is a comedian but this rendition is highly inspiring and almost called him a priest because he has all qualities and looks as one and the message here is more than a sermon "God's mysterious ways" and a little grace is all we need
@@sockneman I highly recommend Orthodox Christianity brother i.e. Greek, Russian and most Eastern European and Asian churches. I was an atheist become Christian but was dissatisfied with most protestant and catholic churches and now go between Greek and Romanian churches, both Orthodox of course. I can go into more detail of the church/ my experience of it would be useful to you.
He has such wonderful voice and brilliance in using it. Yet, he chooses to do movies without dialogues and excels in it. Huge respect. Absolutely, beautiful.
This is one of the most profound statements I have ever heard. From a comedian, no less. In one of my last classes in seminary, the professor commented that, now that we were about to graduate, one thing that we should have learned in those three years is that we hardly know anything, especially about God, and by the end of our ministry, we will realize we know even less. Some 40 years on, when people ask me about God, I reply that God is mysterious, and all we really know is that (S)He is full of grace, and we can only hope to live in that. I did not expect this from Mr. Bean, but I get the sense that he knew whereof he spoke.
@ David Irving: Hi, David. Forgive me for saying so… but it’s safe to say that JESUS knows a lot more about God than we do, being Divine Himself & “God the Son” in the Holy Trinity. Therefore, since HE HIMSELF always referred to God & also addressed HIM as “FATHER”, that’s certainly good enough for us… (Our FATHER who art in Heaven…?) & why the use of the term “(S)He” when referring to Him - contrary to anything that one finds in God’s Holy Bible - is a modern affectation that should be vigorously discouraged at the very least…..
It seems more profound than it is when taken out of context. This is from the 2005 film "Keeping Mum". When he says "A little of God's grace", he pauses because at that moment he realizes that a lot of his family's problems have been solved by their new, elderly housekeeper Grace. And that her way of solving problems is very much not Christian.
how is it possible for a man to be so talented? except from being a perfect actor he is also a fucking genius. man I'd love to meet him someday. it's my dream ever since I was a little kid. he is just so perfect at everything
Zarkow how is that relevant to anything? and to answer yes he showed signs of atheism in many interviews.but again how is that relevant to what the guy said?
Rowan Atkinson is a generational talent. It is interesting to me that the same time and place produced Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Eric Idle, Michael Palin Terry Chapman and many more. Must have been something in the air.
" Our Lord doesn't want us to question too much" , which implies that actual faith always seeks a degree of understanding from reason. In fact the Catechism of the Catholic Church, states that, starting with the creation man can unfailingly recognise the Creator ,albeit not fully nor exhaustively . " I believe in order to understand and I understand to better believe" - St. Augustine
Nice one, Rowan. I know he's not religious, or at least has done irreligious things in the past, but this packs heart. I'm tempted to see the wider movie now. Someone who isn't religious but is still able to respect the value faith has for others is one I can real take my hat off to :-)
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not a junkie but I respect the value heroin has for others. ;) Same goes for all drug addicts. I just wish they wouldn't insist on inflicting suffering on the rest of us.
"not religious... but... packs heart" The "but" in that wording is pointlessly biased. Many people who aren't religious have heart (Rowan, for instance).
Joseph Scott sorry if I was unclear. I didn't at all mean people without religion are heartless, that would be ridiculous to say. What I meant is that even though he was acting out beliefs he didn't personally hold this scene still carried a lot of emotional weight. I was complimenting him on his acting skill, not denigrating people with different beliefs.
I know I'm late to this party, but I'm glad there's someone else out there who isn't personally religious, but can respect other people's belief in God :)
@@Gods_messenger_Elijah Two very different situations which cannot be compared. One claims to be what God said. The other is two historical figures talking about another historical figure. All of them human beings with no special powers. Just like you and me.
Yes, Keeping Mum is an excellent movie, this scene can only be understood in the movie's context ("Grace" is the name of one of the characters in the movie), and the character Rowan plays is not expressing Rowan's beliefs, he's expressing the fictional character's beliefs.
The character "Grace" is phenomenal in this movie, accidentally to which she was referred in this convention by vicar. The music is also very catchy and compliments the situations in the movie. It's a must watch movie though it is referred as a dark comedy. You will fell in love with all the characters especially Grace...
"I am mysterious, folks. Live with it" #that line cracks me every time. Mr Atkinson is really a brilliant actor. God... Doesn't want us to ask many questions... That line kind of hit me. Why do you answer a question... With another question.. I guess Cod will have their separate convention . Lol XD This made me think though... Live with it.... Live with it..
If God didn't want us to question him, he wouldn't have given us a questioning mind. We have every right to question God since we are questioning about things that affect us. Well, that's too bad, God.
And thus in the bible we have the book of Job. It really tells us what it means ''my ways are not your ways''. When we start questioning god it comes to the selfish aspect, but god's actions will affect everyone. Also God said he will grant any wish to Solomon, any wish he desire... And what Solomon asked made god give him even more. God want's us to ask questions, but we should not question his actions with selfish mind.
@@suomipoika1796 Will it be considered ''selfish'' if a child asks not to be raped? Or if another asks to be cured of cancer? Will your God, who is so concerned about the welfare of a king, have the time and inclination to listen to a starving child in Syria?
@@JD-ro7xe My father is dying on small cell lung cancer as we speak, so i would say it's not selfish... What i meant by selfish was the things we ask from god. Make me rich, make me famous, make my life better, i don't want any pain. The thing is that our point in life is not to be rich, not to be famous, have a easy life... Our meaning is to help one another, we are not here to be served, we are here to serve. That child would not be raped if the person doing that would not be selfish. Each action we do will affect others, our selfish actions will hurt others. Every bad thing happening in this world starts from selfish action. When you serve yourself you are not making the world better place. So a child asking for help or a dying person asking for healing it's not selfish.
@@suomipoika1796 Sorry to hear about your father. I have no words to comfort you. With all the pain and suffering in the world, it is difficult to believe there is a God. Wishing for wealth and enjoyment can't be considered selfish. What's wrong with wealth? It's the religions that glorify poverty. All creatures are made selfish. It's the basic rule for survival. Only animals that live in groups help each other. But that also is to ensure their own survival . God read nature, has made us so.
Very moving and inspiring! Actually brought tears to my eyes. As good an argument as I've ever heard masterfully performed by a master-Master Thespian, that is! Genius!
Wow! Absolutely amazing speech! I’m overwhelmed with Gods amazing grace after listing to The one and only Rowan! Amazing actor! Should I dare say “The best”😍
wow, i needed that. I just recently in a state where questioning of what is happening to my life lately. "my ways are not your ways", that hit me so hard, everything is happening for a reason. instead of questioning his ways, i should just be thankful for the benefits he's given me.
Um, yeah he's acting. His words are in the script. But... "To criticize a person for their race is manifestly irrational and ridiculous, but to criticize their religion, that is a right. That is a freedom. The freedom to criticize ideas, any ideas- even if they are sincerely held beliefs- is one of the fundamental freedoms of society. A law which attempts to say you can criticize and ridicule ideas as long as they are not religious ideas is a very peculiar law indeed." - Rowan Atkinson, 2004, commenting on Britain's Racial and Religious Hatred Bil.
Rowan has such a majestic, magnetic voice. If he does not have an audio bookl series, he really, really should. Rowan reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (for example) would be up there with Stephen Fry reading the Harry Potter books or Morgan Freeman reading anything.
When MrBeen was on tv i was on a very bad place,i was placed on a orphanage,i think i was 7 when i saw the first episode and every time the episode ended i always waited till the next day cause it was a way to smile. So thank you MrBeen
Good actors: are those who can make you laugh or mourn... and... god, i'm crying with this video. A little sad but I can see a lot of talent in this actor
I was browsing his skits to rid my anxieties and help me cope with them, then this was next. I wasn't expecting this to be wholesome, and eye-opening. Might it be a sign, true, but I shall declare my apologies, and gratitude to the Lord. God bless us all!
Well, according to something I revently read he's got IQ 178 Don't know if it's;s true but even if it';s not. he's certainly a very well educated person. (Went to Newcastle and Oxford)
The problem with saying that "God's ways are mysterious." is that you can say that with anything. Pray to a plastic bag and if you don't get what you want, the plastic bag is just being mysterious.
That's a good statement, except that praying to an inanimate object is not the same as praying to God. Surely you can pray to a plastic bag and try to believe in it, but it is only a plastic bag, it does not talk and it will not help you.... ever. On the other hand, praying to God who is a real being and someone you CAN talk to is very different. Just because God doesn't answer your prayer right then doesn't mean he doesn't hear you or isn't working. Even in his silence, he speaks. He never stops working. He is also very much doing something else somewhere else in the world at all times. Things you wouldn't believe even if they were told to you. So yes, it is okay to say "God's ways are mysterious" because He is a very unpredictable God. If God had made it so that we were 100% like him, and we had the same knowledge as him, then there would be no reason to follow God or need God. I hope that answers your comment.
That's a great question! I've wondered that most of my life as well. It's been a recent thing I have discovered while i have been here on a missionary trip in Costa, Rica. The reason I know it's not my own voice or conscience speaking to me. Is because I know with 100% confidence some of the things he's said to me would not in anyway be something i would ever say. That's number one. Another reason is when he is talking it's usually something convicting. Why would I want to convict myself? that doesn't make sense. Another reason is when It's God talking It's usually something challenging and uncomfortable. He doesn't talk to us physically. He could if he wanted to. God can speak to us in anyway he wants. But that was something that happened in the old testament. He doesn't typically use sensational means of communication in this age. He mainly talks to us through the Holy spirit which only lives in those who believe in Jesus and what he did on the cross and his resurrection, Through his word (the Bible), and sometimes even through other people. This is how I know it's not me talking to myself. I hope this answers your question.
Isaac Hull Depending on how optimistic or pessimistic you are on a certain day, you may imagine God saying "Do this." or "Don't do this." People are hard on themselves all the time. So it isn't surprising that they could be hard on themselves and imagine that it is God behind it. And you read things that are relevant to something you are going through and think that God led you to that passage. But it may just be a coincidence.
Roger Kreil Well.. I guess to that I would have to say that's where faith comes into place. The evidence that we have of the existence of there being a higher deity gives us confidence that it really is the voice of God. Another way to tell if it is God's voice is to revert to the scriptures. God will never tell us to do anything or to not do something that is going to contradict what the Bible says. Just for a simple example: let's just say you thought God was telling you to go murder some person because they wronged you very badly. You were so confident that it was him because it felt like that is what the person deserved, but then you go to the Bible and it says Do not murder. It also says in Matthew when Jesus was giving the sermon on the mount. He talks about revenge. He says if a person wrongs you, give them the other cheek. Now granted, that is a little on the extreme side. but it gets my point across. Obviously God is never going to permit someone to murder, but that is one way to simply explain whether what you think you are hearing is from God or from yourself. If it in any way contradicts the Bible it's probably you talking, or even possibly the enemy(Satan) talking to you trying to deceive you. Does that make sense?
