Four rowing machines - all with their own purpose for me - and I love using them all. It also looks like I've had a rather unhealthy Christmas....

Wow by far the Concept 2 I love mine thanks for the video. 😊

Glad you like it! (The video and the Concept2). I love rowing on all four of these machines. A different purpose from each one. I'm very lucky to have them all!!

@@rowalong Do you mind sharing your thoughts on how you use the four rowers "a different purpose from each one". I'm just curious as I'm looking to get a rower and I'm down to the Concept 2 and the Waterrower (or Ergatta which is a Waterrower with a membership app). I like the water and the lower noise level on the Waterrower but I know the Concept 2 is the gold standard. I'm a beginner so obviously, I have nothing to compare to. Thx.

Over the years, I have rowed more than 10 million meters on the Concept2. But never on my own, I always had to go to the gym. As I live in an apartment I never bought a Concept2, some of the training sessions were far too intense and therefore too loud. Nevertheless, I never considered buying the quieter Waterrower, I didn't want to give up the Concept2 logbook, the accuracy of the PM5, the world rankings and the comparability among many rowers worldwide. And that's still the case today, I'm starting to row again, but I don't see an alternative to the Concept2 for me. I also believe that wind or water drive is better for the body in the long run than magnetic drive.

If you get the smartrow conversion kit for the waterrower it connects to bluetooth, is supposed to be much more precise and you can save your results. The waterrower feels very smooth and probably closer to actual rowwing in a boat. But, I've never owned a concept2 so I don't know how the two really compare.

Fascinating review. I must say that if I had a greater love of indoor rowing, I'd be VERY interested in the Aviron as well. However, I have this ongoing Love-Hate relationship with my Concept2, so there you go 🤣 Great content as always, keep up the good work ... and Happy New Year !

They're all great machines to be honest. And remember, the Aviron App for C2 kinda brings the two together! A very happy new year to you too. Thanks for watching!

Really interesting to see both the impact of the difference in technique as well as the machine. I had someone comment on how they were surprised on how short my stroke was for this CTC, but I am hesitant to take it on the erg too far from where my coach wants it in the boat. As it was, coach was yelling at me a lot from the launch today, "Elizabeth, sit up."

Yeah, like I say in the summary, what I’m doing isn’t about rowing. It’s just about making the machine go fast.

Glad you liked it! Although I'm tempted to go one step further and do the test for each machine at different settings. Not enough hours in the day for that though!! Happy new Year good sir. "Lang may yer lum reek". (And hopefully I'll be reeking alongside you).

Loved this comparison. You concluded the way I felt when I decided to get a waterrower. Compare the brands to themselves when talking splits, etc. I’m thinking quite a few rowers, like me don’t use our monitors for much more then just telling us how far we have rowed. Stroke per minute, time. We don’t compete or compare online. So any rower that suits your fancy is what you should go with. Well done.
@rowalong
@rowalong 6 месяцев назад
Exactly! And truth be told, I've been on a journey over the past 18 months or so to reach the same decision. I used to be a "Concept2 or nothing" kinda guy. But once I started using the Water Rower, then the Aviron and finally the RP3 - I realised that it's not that simple. There are a lot of machines that are great. (And a lot that aren't great!)

@brockthedog315 Did you buy the A1 and what you do think about it?
@rowalong
@rowalong 3 месяца назад
@kgp43 I much prefer the monorail model. You’ll see in the live rows when I am on the water rower I use that one. The A1 monitor isn’t great, but I did upgrade it to SmartRow, so that’s not an issue.
@kgp43
@kgp43 3 месяца назад
@@rowalong How about the seat on the A1? It looks like a new model, from the fotos. You had a lot of complaints about the Seat on the dual-rail model (you turned it 180°).
@rowalong
@rowalong 3 месяца назад
@@kgp43 Yeah, the two reasons I prefer the A1 model are the seat, which doesn't have the weird lip to it, and the width of the feet. The monorail allows the natural width of the foot placement either side. The other version squeezes your feet inbetween the two rails. I mean, I like them both - but I always pick the A1.

Thanks for the comparison, I own a Body power R100 water rower but have always been 😞 disappointed with it's resistance. You mentioned you filled the A1 above it's normal level to equal the concept 2. May ask by how much and of all of the water rowers you have tried is the resistance relatively equal or is the A1 just superior, sorry for long question, thanks.

I had the Concept2 at 150DF, and the water level at 18 felt similar at the front, but tougher at the back. I have another WR with 17 litres in it - it feels lighter at the front, but similar at the back. I know, I should probably try 17.5 one day... Both of my water rowers feel the same with the same water in them. The A1 I find more comfortable to row on as my feet are either side of the rail. On the performance (dual rail) version, I feel my feet are too close together.
@myztical
@myztical 6 месяцев назад
Oh hey you got the a1 same one I have. Do you like it better than the dual rail? I really want the smart row setup!
@rowalong
@rowalong 6 месяцев назад
Yes. I much prefer the seat and the foot width. I still have (and use) the Dual Rail performance from time to time. But I much prefer the A1. The Smart Row upgrade is essential if you train with pace based effort.

I had no idea that the RP3 existed. Not wanting to seem like a big dummy but what is the theory behind that rower with 2 moving parts?
@rowalong
@rowalong 6 месяцев назад
It makes it feel a LOT more like rowing in a real boat. It's also kinder on your back. I love using it, as it 100% needs to start with the leg drive. There's no way people can get away with just using their upper body strength to get the power in.

@@rowalongThanks for the explanation. There are a couple for sale on the local classifieds and now I want to give it a go. Thanks again for all that you do.
@DaveNeve

What some people will do to try to lop off a couple of seconds on a rowing machine. Have you thought about putting a rubber door stop at the end of the rail, undoing the foot straps, and then pushing yourself all the way back along the rail until the seat hits the doorstop and bounces you back for the catch as well. That would easily give you an extra 50 cm per stroke plus the faster catch. Only you are mad enough to try it John🤣🤣🤣
@rowalong
@rowalong 6 месяцев назад
Better yet, I could put a resistance band round my waist to pull me forwards each stroke!!!
@DaveNeve
@DaveNeve 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, and that would make sure that you get a forwards tilt in the catch, except that you might be a 3 'o clock instead of 1 'o clock 🥵
