I'm an 85-year-old man with a 50-year history of lower back pain and two surgeries. I have taken your advice on lowering the foot rests on my new Concept 2 and it has made a huge difference. Thank you!

Omg this was life-changing. I bought a water erg a year ago and couldn't understand why my back just kept hurting. After watching this I realized my foot plates were on the highest one!!! Thanks soo much

So glad i decided to watch your videos at the begging of my rowing journey and not after all the injuries i would have incurred over rowing with my feet in the wrong position. Thank you sir, you're services are much appreciated.

Hey, thank you so much. My lower back was hurting and i couldnt understand at all why this was happening. You are right. My feet were placed too high. I lowered my feet position and my lower back pain is gone. All thanks to your excellent diagnosis and suggestion!

Thank you very much for this. I have had my concept 2 for about 8 months. I watch many videos, but have never quite understood where my damn feet are supposed to go. I am in my mid-50s, 5'6", got a belly, and have wide feet. I row 5X a week, but honestly, I have never felt I was getting (what I call the choreography) quite right. Yours is the first vid I've seen that addresses the foot position. I am grateful. Another thing that you may have already talked about, it how older people who have a belly or weird pain can tell when they are at 11-12-1. Much harder to tell if you are not young and slim.

Lowered foot plates per your suggestion, OMG, makes a lot of difference. Also got a longer handle because of your videos, rower came with 16 1/4 inch handle (Sunny) and my shoulders are 18 1/2 inches. Both are tremendous, you are the best.

Thanks for this very important info. I’m a thin female. I could feel my ischial tuberosities while rowing thinking it was just because I’m thin. My low back was bothering me yesterday and I couldn’t row. Today I’m pain free after using your tip. Takes some focus to shift sitting toward front throughout my workout so I pause briefly to do so and then resume. Loving rowing. Please keep sharing your tips. Thanks again.

nice tip! I don't suffer from back-pain after rowing, more hamstring pain! however I am 6'5" tall but have longer leg to torso ratio. My knees are always in the way even though I am "sitting on my junk". This tip will help as I know that my feet are not in the "right" position. I can adjust the feet and then focussing on reducing the size of my gut- lol

As well as this , I used my weightlifting shoes which have got a "bit of a heel" and my weightlifting belt, together they all helped a lot. Thanks

I've had very mild back aches (nothing debilitating, but annoying) that kick in about 20 minutes into some workouts, and this is definitely not something I've addressed. Always gone with strap over mid-foot, but that usually means I have to lift my heels a bit to get into a reliably "good" position. Gonna give this a stab in the afternoon. Thanks!

Felt that on my waterrower. Just bought pad for the seat (memory foam) and got some extra height on the seat. Comfort spiked up. Still sitting like you said brings me another issue, as wr seat rises up on the front edge it is putting pressure on my shank... really uncomfy after 40+ mins on a rower. Started thinking on cutting off bit of foam there. Will try putting the seat other way round as well.

I don't think I have too much problem reaching forward. When I have hurt my back is at the backstop. I thought maybe I was leaning too far back and then the snap forward pulled a muscle on the lower right side. From another video of yours I also was probably going too high of a rate too early in my routine.

My lower back pain is sort of unique. Long/short of it, my l4/l5/s1 are fused and the discs between were replaced a while ago. I use a Waterrower w/ max amount of water for resistance, well slightly more, it's a pain to empty/fill. My pace avg is 28/29 SPM for 25 minutes, 5 days a week. I never thought about the foot placement being an issue, worth a try. Back pain is nothing new to me, the rowing just seems to especially piss it off lol.

Anyone out there with an actual bad back/former back injury who can attest to using rowing equipment for strengthening their back? There are lots of reviews by trainers, all who seem to be in their 20s, but what about actual people with bad backs in their 40s and 50s who have tips and tricks?

Should the seat deck be on a parallel position to the floor? I have a total knee replacement and have a new rower, but it sits so low to the ground that I cannot get down onto the seat. I need to build an up rise platform before I can use it, but I currently have multiple discs with degeneration and herniation L5-Sacrum both sides pressing on my nerves, which makes walking a daily survival experience.

I don't know if this has been talked about before, but I also get pain in my knees for a time after I finish rowing. It kind of feels like I twisted them. Admittedly, I have had bad knees for the better part of my life. How should they be set when rowing? Is it okay for them to close in together when pushing out, or should I be keeping then firmly apart at all times?
