GREAT review! I love the Concept Model D. Bulletproof, light, easy maintenance, smooth feel. The adjustability is awesome, and the ErgData app has been improved by leaps and bounds over the past 6 months. The WOD that integrates into the PM5 with one touch of lets me start super fast. PM5's connectivity with a variety of heart rate monitors is top notch. I have no complaints.

I'm just a beginner at rowing and during my research of rowers I came across how awesome the concept2 rower is however because I am a beginner and needed something to keep me engaged I chose the Nordictrack RW900 with the free 1yr subscription because the Hydrow rower was costly and subscription was twice as much as the ifit subscription. I hope my decision will benefit me but as I said I really needed the interactive classes and rowing down rivers to keep me coming back and not giving up. I have already lost 90lbs with diet alone and now adding exercise to lose the last 90lbs and rowing seems to be the exercise I like the most. Thanks for your videos, they are really helpful.

I've had a Concept II Model B for over three decades. It's the second piece of home exercise equipment I've purchased, the first being one of the original Nordic Track - PSI legacy skiers. I discovered the Concept II at a hotel fitness center when I was at a conference and loved it. I think it was about $600 when I bought it in the mid 80's, so about $100 more than the Nordic Track that I had purchased a few years earlier. It is heavy, one piece, and has wooden footplates but they have three position settings. :-) And it has an older computer that has all of the basics. It came with a choice of two seat styles, the default being the one that they still have available on their web site, but decided I liked the older Model A seat better and exchanged it. It is narrower from front to back, with deeper impressions for the ischial tuberosities and a wide cutout for the tailbone, and it doesn't chafe my butt and thighs when I'm rowing. I'm not a heavy user (but I am a bit heavy), I go through periods of being active with my home exercise equipment and periods of not using it at all, but I've really liked it.

Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this ru-vid.comUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

Concept 2 - Low maintanence & Battery powered monitor - Light - Compact for storage - Durable - Good feel and not that loud - Great resistance - Priced well, and the used market for these is awesome to save some money. nothing else really ticks these boxes, especially when you stick a tablet on one running the C2 app the display becomes an awesome feature.

A note on the Sunny Fitness Phantom Hydro Rower: The monitor does not track distance/pace accurately and does not even claim to do so. It measures your strokes at 8m per stroke whatever power you put into it. Customer service told me "the monitor is not intended to accurately measure pace or distance". If that doesn't matter to you, it's a decent machine, but you won't be able to track anything useful apart from time.

Pistachio is my favorite. The Sunny Hydraulic is such a waste of money, you'd almost be better off spending the $86 on cake, and getting your workout walking to CVS to pick up your metformin. Great vid. Nothing beats the start/end position of your hands on the Concept2. If my work gym didn't have a couple, I'd just buy one.

The Concept 2 is (still) the rower for me, 4yrs and counting. It’s built like a tank- professional grade for sure. Replacement parts, should you ever need them, are very reasonably priced. The PM5, though smaller than I would like, is very powerful… i.e. the force-curve display, offering on the fly feedback on the quality of your rowing strokes. And there are no add’l subscriptions you have to pay for… I really like that.
@arprtr
@arprtr 3 года назад
I picked the Concept2. Factors involved were the open eco-system, it talks to my Garmin and Strava platforms. If all of the tech on it dies I can still use my watch to record the rowing and the machine itself continues to function. It is an industry-standard and commercial grade piece of equipment. I have used it with the IFIT software that came with my treadmill and even though the ifit is a closed ecosystem I could run both the concept2 and ifit software on my phone at the same time and project it to a Chromecast big screen. I think the IFIT workouts are good but they are indexed poorly and there do not seem to be too many of them. I took delivery of the Concep2 Nov 4th 2020 and have logged 595,690 meters. I could not be happier with my purchase. Thank you so much for your guidance.

Strawberry icecream. I went waterrower thanks to the sound... It's silly, but the sound motivates me and makes all the difference for my wife using it too. Most of your subscribers will be too young, but sometimes I just put on the theme from Banacek and go for a row. But most days I use it "for real". BTW, your books and videos have been key for my rate of progress.

I've had a Concept2 since 1999. Mine was a Model C. I replaced the handle on it because I liked the newer handles more, and I had to replace the PM2 monitor on it due to a malfunction. My present monitor is a PM3 which I have been using for several years. It does not have all of the wireless features of the PM5, but still can be connected to a phone or computer by wire. Without a doubt, the Concept2 is the gold standard for rowing machines. I have also been involved in organizing indoor rowing competitions where all of the machines were Concept2. These are the machines used for training by the best rowers in the world. My neighbour used her Concept2 while rowing to a silver medal at the Olympics in London.

I’ve used Concept 2s at the gym on and off for years. Always got a good workout, although I dreaded any row over 15 minutes. I pulled the trigger on a Hydrow last month after seeing the wait list for a Concept 2. I was legitimately concerned about the cost. I needn’t have been. I’ve been rowing with it for a couple of weeks now and can honestly say that I look forward to every row. The rowers with water sound very appealing to me and look nicer. Here are my questions: 1. How much of a hassle is it to change the water resistance back and forth for diff levels of users or needs? 2. Is rowing a good exercise for losing belly fat? 3. Would rowing be a good exercise to do after a knee replacement? I hope I get some response here! Please let me know your thoughts.

Java chip - thanks, you saved me from buying a piece of equipment that may or may not get used, but doesn't provide a good experience in any case. My priorities: good workout, comfortable use, quietness, quality build, space. Haven't decided how much I like the pro-level coached workouts that come with membership subscriptions, but for sure dislike monthly subscription costs. So I love the Hydrow but would likely buy the Concept2. That's probably what I used at the gym a long time ago, and I liked it just fine.

I recently purchased the Sunny Obsidian Surge and take issue with your negative review. While I'm not an experienced rower, I do know an excellent full body workout when I feel it. Sure, the foot plates pivot when they shouldn't, but the resistance feels authentic and the build is solid. I really like the sound of the water resistance and the whole unit can be stored on end to save space when not in use. Thanks for providing your input, but I feel you need to give this machine a more thorough review...

All you need to know about the C2 is from the resale market: Every used C2 erg is almost the retail price. You might get one for a hundred off if you're lucky, but the things hold onto their resale value almost entirely. That says a lot about quality and construction. And a friend got the Sunny magnetic for free and I tried it out once. Holy cow, what a horrible device. It's not really rowing so much as it is strenuous pulling. There's no rhythm, smoothness or efficiency to the machine. I've used the C2 since I was a rower in high school, and sitting on the sunny was like going from a Ferrari to an old Ford.
@HermanWillems
@HermanWillems 2 года назад
Sounds like buying a Herman Miller office chair. Just spend the extra. They have 12 years of warranty and the resale value is very high. So total cost of ownership is much lower than a cheap ass chair. And it's the best chair for your back. I see the C2 like a Herman Miller of Rowing equipment.
@sabrowenie
@sabrowenie 3 года назад
The beauty of the C2 stuff is their longevity and consistency. Before it shutdown I used a model E the company fitness center. They never did any maintenance so I sprung for the $60 parts. After new bungees, chain, and seat rollers, worked like new. Last September got a model D for home. A couple weeks ago picked up a C in good shape at a yard sale. Freed the stuck links, cleaned and lubed the chain, tightened the bungees. Feel is almost the same, most difference is the handle. Basically except for the differences in the PM’s with only minor maintenance these will last a lifetime, or more

Great vid...and very valuable to the consumer...bottom line...in for a penny, in for a pound...get the Concept 2 if you're starting out, and watch some rowing vids on your laptop if you want that "on the river" "experience" of the hydrow (which by the way will cost you $438/year for the video subscription service--and you have to listen to the musical bed under the narration! Who wants that??? Wouldn't it be better to just hear the oars on the water with an OCCASIONAL comment re: form or technique?). Almost TOO EASY of an answer: you can have bells and whistles of hydrow if you stick with it--but start out with a Concept 2. Resale on Concept 2 is good...especially now, when there are... Hey WAIT JUST A MINUTE!! They're no longer $900...more like $1200 if you can find one. But still a sound buy. And if you want to row "on the water", get yourself a 65" tv at Costco for $500, put it up on the wall and play a rowing vid from your laptop to the TV via an HDML cable (or use Apple TV)--there's a lot of them from all over the world on youtube--on your WALL size (not 22") monitor...and you can also watch netflix and amazon prime while you're rowing...don't underestimate the distraction a good compelling tv series provides--6 years of House of Cards?--to get in a good workout without getting bored. But Waterrower ought to be an A as well, and not just with ergatta vid accessory. Watterrower is as CLASSIC a rower as Concept 2. Me? I use a waterrower (used, $900 four years ago + 65" tv from costco, my laptop and a hdml cable--simple setup). I am neither competitive nor an athlete. I can row at 6.00 am in my third floor gym and not wake the family in bedrooms on the second floor.

Waterrowers are good and in my opinion the only machine comparable to the concept2, but they are not “as classic” as the C2. As a real rower, they simply are not a viable option for a competitive athlete.

Boysenberry I have a water rower, it looks great and sounds great. I do have a bit of an issue with the footplates being so close and a bit high, it's harder to get into a comfortable catch position. If I upgrade I may look at the 2ater rower with a monorail. The plates seem 2 inches wider and an inch lower which I think would make all the difference.

The absence of RowPerfect is a travesty. Every D1 program in the US uses them. Expensive as hell but with or without the piston to simulate boat roll, dynamic ergs are so much more like actual rowing.

This video is really helpful now that I'm looking at investing in a good machine. I bought the Sunny Magnetic machine three years ago because I was worried I wouldn't stick with rowing and couldn't afford much as a broke student. Turns out I loved rowing and I've used that Sunny machine almost daily for years....but yeah. Its features are bad, I always relied on apps/other programs to overcome the lack of metrics, and I had to remake the foot peddles because the original design is terrible. Now that I can afford something better I'm looking forward to upgrading. (Gotta agree on the rocky road for favorite ice cream)

Very helpful to hear how and why you ranked them. Wish you had included more, but I'll bet others in the $500-$700 would range fall into your C-D category. Also, it would have been helpful if you had said more about differences in the physical experience of using these rowers and if any of them might be actually more prone to creating back problems. Pistachio!

I have a waterrower, it’s hard to compare my 2k times to an air rower (apparently 7 min on concept2 would be the equivalent of 6:20 min on my water one?) also did a marathon on it last week and one of the wheels cracked clean in half at the end 😂 thank god for your rowing exercises for when you have no machine!

I sort of have a problem with ranking rowers you actually haven't rowed on. It would be more authentic if you actually tried them and did a true review. Especially when I heard you compare a $400 Costco Proform to the $1600 Norditrack RW900. That's like ranking a Lexus based on having driven a Toyota Camry. They are made by the same company but one is the economy brand and the other the luxury brand. I really would like your opinion on using the actual RW900. You may still feel the same and that's fair but then it would be a true opinion

Worked out at gym with Concept2 for years. Moved to a different gym that only has Matrix Rowers. Never looked back. Don't need to add anymore to my gym noise experience than already exits and the Matrix Rower is essentially silent. Enjoy the seat experience better on the Matrix as it has more spring and is thicker for more comfort for 30+ minute rows. Handle is easily better/ergonomic on the Concept2 though for sure. Would like to try the handle on the Octane Ro though as well as that rower's experience. If you have ANY interest at all on more resistance type of training (less cardio/more muscle building), the Concept2 can't hold a candle to the Matrix Rower. Try level 10 on a Matrix Rower - you're muscles will be screaming in no time. Much better machine over a Concept 2 if you are interested in supplementing your rowing cardo with muscle building movements on the higher magnetic levels of the Matrix. Oh, and those close foot plates on the Concept 2, just not for me as my psoas muscles, etc are often contracted and the wider foot plates allow for more range of motion/full strokes. I didn't know how important and helpful that was for me until I spent months on a Matrix. Also, the build quality feels great on a Matrix versus the Concept 2's I spent probably 10 years on. Very solid and stable. The only others I would like to try would be the Octane Ro and the Technogym...which of course will not be silent like the Matrix which I personally enjoy. Anyone interested in a Concept 2 should compare to the Xebex.

Great video. I've only used rowers at the gym. I have always preferred Concept 2 and I like the sound. I grew up rowing a small boat on a lake so the fan reminds me of the wind. I did have a gym that had water rowers and it was still enjoyable but I missed the sound of the Concept. Magnetic didn't do it for me. It is also difficult to find Concepts used, people keep them. I've not tried the Hydrow but would not like the subscription issue.

thanks, Concept it is, I had originally looked into Nordictrack as they were having a special, but the lightweight, simplicity, build quality, and availability of parts make the case for the Concept. If I want a screen I have an ipad air so the PM5 will be fine, and at $900 its not a bad deal

35 years of rowing. Concept two is the best machine out there. Durable, parts easily and cheaply replaced, built like a tank, and always updating the Electronics for all you data nuts out there. Hydrow is fine also. The rest is commentary. Mechanically there is nothing as good as a Concept Two. Practical without pretensions and still the best IMHO.

Mint chocolate chip, Baskin-Robbins version is the best. I got a waterrower 6 months ago because of my small space and the low noise. The noise is actually quite calming on its own. I'm using it to get healthy again, so I don't really even pay too much attention to the screen it came with. Once I get to a more competitive place physically then I'll likely upgrade the monitor. The first rower I used was an air rower at rowhouse and that one felt really great too, but no space for that !

Thank you for your videos. I am 58 years old and have always stayed fit. I lift 3 days a week and run on my elliptical 4-5 times a week 40-50 mins. With that being said, with my age and a stomach disease, I do have body fat on me. I would say I'm probably in between 14 to 16%. My diet is pretty bland because of my stomach disease but I've noticed as of late the elliptical is not helping me in my quest to cut body fat. Hearing how much of a percentage rowing uses of all your body muscles, I feel that would probably be a better bet for me as far as taking down body fat percentage. Yes I'm going to continue to lift. My good friend has a concept D rower and now with what you have just confirmed in the next month I will be purchasing one myself. Again thank you very much for your valuable information.

Strawberry ice cream! Thanks so much for this comparison video. I almost was going to buy one of the ones you graded low, and instead may get the Sunny Phantom Hydro (when it become available again). It's been a really tough search for me. At 5'2" I've run into the crappy (and pivoting, ugh!) footrest issue, having to buy online with no real idea what they'll be like. And you're the ONLY reviewer who even mentions this being an issue for petite women! There are many short people out there and reviews (and products) only seem to consider the tall ones, grrrr. So again, thanks for that. :)

@@vreekel5379 Hey. :) I ended up getting a Marcy Water Rower NS-6023RW. It has a tilted tank. It's perfect for me! I'm still wimpy - about the lowest water setting is still quite a challenge for more than a couple of minutes, lol. But it's a pleasure enough to use that I know I'll get better. The pedal positioning did the trick for my short height issue after some experimenting with the settings. The computer is kind of crap, but I usually just listen to music anyway and go by minutes and count instead of stroke rate and all that (trying to build strength over aerobic speed). It seems really well-made, nice smooth glide on the rail, tilts upwards to save some space when not using, and the water sound is so cool!
