One of the most impactful episodes for me. While focusing on the order of operations, I feel like this episode provides the best explanation of the transitions into and out of the hip swing.

This guy is brilliant!! I've just realised what I was missing in my stroke, as up until this moment I felt there is something wrong I was doing. Many thanks for those very informative videos, and please keep up the good work.

I just knocked 45 seconds off my 5,000m PB simply by finding my damper sweet-spot. But even after all the time I've been rowing, I've never really brought the legs and hips into play. Thank you for the reminder at 4:06.

I have had my concept 2 model D Rower for 1 week and I absolutely love this thing. However, I am having a hard time getting my 500m split lower than 2:15-2:05, which is the power. My spm is around 29-31 which I think is good. I am 5'9 193 trying to lose 20+ pounds. What I love about this machine is you compete against yourself. As of now, I am focusing on my 2000m time which as of now is 9:33 is my PR. I know that isn't that fast but I just got this thing. I know I can get in the eights but my goal is 6:40. If you are on the fence about buying this thing do it and dont look back. I have already lost 4 pounds. No joke.

What city do you come from? If you have the option to join a local rowing club then trust me that is the best option for you to learn how to row. 9.33 2k is a problem of a technique, not your lacking fitness. Annual fees for a rowing club are in the same price range as some seminars taught by crossfit non rowers to teach people how to row and there are different membership options you dont always have to pay a year up front. You would get your money worth and rowing as a sport is awesome. But I do have to say this is the best instructional video from a non rower that I have seen

6:40 is a number I can only dream of. My time is 8:19.7 and I have a good technique but I believe I lack aerobic fitness. Your age also plays a part. I'm male, 55, 5'9" and 76Kgs

You seem to do a little wrist movement at the end of the stroke, your grip looks extremely well relaxed. Do you have a video about that side of things ?
@Jez2008UK
@Jez2008UK 5 лет назад
Do you have videos / instruction for improving aerobic fitness ? As I feel that this is the area where I am lacking. I have good strength, I know that because I do weight training and do barbell squats, deadlift, bench press etc and am at pretty good weights / reps / sets for those, yet on the Rower, I don't seem to have the ability to sustain enough puff in my lungs for a sub 8mins 2k row time.

As a cyclist you’re always looking for saving energy or increase your power in many different ways and is funny that almost at the end of your video you mention that doing those movements could increase 30 % of your power and that percent is now in my mind. Thanks again for an useful presentation.🐎

That was me yesterday. I like rowing, but I feel like I'm not using my legs 60% nor hip swing 30%. The thing is I have muscular legs and hips, but I can't effectively engage them. My back is doing the work.

How do you open and close your hips????
@strawberryyogurt0
@strawberryyogurt0 7 лет назад
So, kind of like a deadlift ... loading the posterior chain and pushing one's hip/pelvic region forward to extend and complete the lift. Secondly, what is your take on dynamic rowers (i.e. RowPerfect, Oartec, etc.)? Note: I have heard that the Dynamic C2 isn't really that great. I like how the static Concept2 disassemble into two pieces and stores easily but also have read that dynamic rowers better mimics solid rowing techniques. Interested in getting a rower in the distant distant distant future (i.e. most likely the Oratec Dx, or least likely the more expensive RowPerfect/RP3).
@DarkHorseRowing
@DarkHorseRowing 7 лет назад
Yes, in some ways borrows common cues from the dead lift, however it is important not to think of rowing as a dead lift just like we wouldn't think of dead lifting as rowing. So as in dead lifting the queue of pushing the ground away from you would be similar to the queue we give of push the machine away from you. However, because we don't completely open the hips as you would with a dead lift, there are differences between the two. Second, dynamic rowers are perfect for rowers. They are becoming a class of their own with different companies entering the market. Our feeling is that they serve a purpose if you are wanting to continue working on boat feel while you are stuck training inside. For fitness purposes however, they are quite an inefficient machine.
@strawberryyogurt0
@strawberryyogurt0 7 лет назад
+Dark Horse Rowing ... can you please elaborate on why dynamic rowers (i.e. Oartec, RowPerfect/RP3) are inefficient machine for fitness purposes here, and possibly also in a future video? Because it actually might sway me back towards looking at the static concept2 (as oppose to the upcoming Oartec Dx). The only reason why my search for an alternative to the static concept2 happened is because user experiences say dynamics are superior: (A) dynamic requires proper technique while static are more forgiving with bad technique; those who have been using dynamic learn to use their leg drive while those who have been using static less so. (B) I see several static concept2 video with comments saying the uploader has terrible form, but you don't read about form problems with dynamic rowers (unless I'm mistaken) because in order continuously row on a dynamic, one's form must be solid. (C) dynamic is better for the lower back while static has caused problems (D) Those who have been long time static users have moved onto dynamics, or even those who have been long time users found their first hand experience with dynamics to be better overall. (E) If price was no object, dynamic seems to be the winner. Most go with the concept2 static because of price, large community, better monitor, and simply because it's the staple in rowing competition. My favorite thing about the concept is because of the ability to separate it into two smaller pieces for easier storage. (F) The transition from dynamic to boat rowing is a seamless transition; while those transitioning from static to boat rowing is a more difficult (i.e. technique). (G) My assumption: If rowing competition used dynamics (i.e. Oartec or RowPerfect/RP3) from the get go, dynamics could very well have dominated the marketplace from the get go leaving the concept2 static relegated to a niche market. Note: I'm not a rower, don't plan to ever row in competition, but just someone looking for a solid cardio equipment to supplement my weight/resistance training.

when opening up my hip in rowing, I tend to have left sided instability/painless clicking and it feels weaker and is distracting. I assume its tight/weak hip flexors?

That sound easy. but... if I cannot touch my toes without bending my legs then this is impossible. It is going to take months of incredibly boring stretching exercises before I can get even near to what I just saw. I am lucky if I can get to 12:00. And...when you have to kill yourself to find one hour to exercise...the realization that I will need to do stretching in order to improve is really horrible.

This guy has tge right idea, but is all wrong. When he claims to be getting power in his hips, he lacks strength to carry his shoulders WITH his hips. His hips move back, but his shoulders and hands do not move. Wasting his effort. Knowledgeable rowers would see this as bucking his oar. If you can not actually move the oar faster, yet "pull" harder anyway, all you do is pull your torso to the oar handle. If the handle does not move back, extra effort is worse than pointless. You waste energy, literally, accomplishing nothing.
