Per Gessle is an unusual person. For reference: he composed lyrics from the age of 13-14, and later, in 1976-77, he founded the Gyllene Tider group together with several other guys. The songs "Billy" and "Flickorna På TV2" made them famous in 1979-1980. Since 1983, Per has been engaged in a solo career, and only in 1986 he offered (it was he) Marie Fredriksson together with his band to record a song. Marie had been a backing vocalist for a while before that, but then everything was more serious. In fact, it was the difficulties in Gessle's career that to some extent pushed him to take the first step and create a Roxette duo that conquered the world. Per is also the author of 96-98% of all Roxette songs. He is an excellent composer, performer and poet. And, if I'm not mistaken, he has no musical education, unlike Marie, who graduated from a music college. Gessle has a huge number of wonderful Swedish and English solo songs, and the songs of Gyllene Tider are his work in collaboration with Mats Persson and other guys of the group. He has many other projects, for example Mono Mind, The Lonely Boys, Per's Garage.... I advise you to familiarize yourself with it a little, you will not regret it! Thanks for your reaction!
If I remember correctly, at one point Roxette was one of the biggest live bands in the world. Dangerous is a great song. My favourite song overall though is "I wish I could fly".
The Look, Dressed For Success, Joyride, Fading Like A Flower, Spending My Time, Cry, Do You Get Excited?, Perfect Day, Watercolors in the Rain… so many hits and so many great songs. More Roxette reactions please! :)
I can't wait for you to continue on the Roxette journey. Still so many gems to discover. MANY album tracks that weren't singles... Breathe, My world my love my life, Turn of the tide, Touched by the hand of God, From a distance... The list goes on and on ❤️
when you listen to Roxette you automatically know that you are going to be in a very good mood all day because her songs are made to feel good, she gives you a lot of encouragement, she creates a very positive atmosphere, well that happens to me when I listen to them❤️
Unfortunately Roxette’s label in the US imploded so they didn’t get any promotion there after that. Dangerous was a US number 2. You should check out another song sound by Per, church of your heart.
"Due to the exceptional weakness of this song play loud." Love Per Gessle dissing his own song on the outro. He's really funny. And has an amazing talent at writing upbeat catchy songs. If you haven't you need to see these tracks live.
Oh my gosh! That's what he's saying??? ROFL! I'm laughing. That is hilarious! All I've ever been able to pick out was, "Play loud." (I thought it was "Play it loud"). 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm going to go listen to that again... Per is hilarious!
This is my favorite roxette song! They have so many good ones. Dressed for success, spending my time, and sleeping in my car also highlight the marie show. Joyride, church of your heart, and big love showcase perr on vocals. Criminally underrated as a band. So many good bands in the 80's sometimes a gem like this slipped through the cracks. I am more into hard rock and hair metal but these guys were always a guilty pleasure! Check out their live concerts on RU-vid. They are even better live!
Well remember they were a Swedish band. They definitely had a period where they were popular in the US during the heyday of MTV with their cool rock videos, but they finally faded with the change of popular music genre's and then she died. But their music was iconic for the 80's and lives on in popularity still today. I do really like the songs where he sings too. His voice is no where as good as hers but Roxette is a duo not just a singer. I like YOU'VE GOT THE LOOK because he sings lead on that as well and there was just something cool about them singing together on the lead vocals. He was also the lead writer of their songs so he was very talented.
They dissapeared in the US, but they kept their fame in the rest of the world.... several world tours, to every country except the US. EMI records USA changed management around '92 and for several months or years and it became an organizational mess internally, that made it really hard for Roxette and many other bands to keep up in the US market.
Hey, Anton! It's great that you came back for some more Roxette. They had such a wonderful sound, and I adore Marie's vocals. If you find yourself in need of more, "SLEEPING IN MY CAR" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S5fn1DfqPfA.html is top shelf. She left us a lot to cherish.
1990, 1991, i was like seven years old and Roxette was very famous in this part of the world and I think all over the world.. you could hear roxette at the radio all the time. i loved all their songs since i was a child
The thing is that there were soooo many musical artists back then and a lot of one-hit wonders. Even for those of us who have lived in that era, it is very hard to remember them all. You can imagine how even harder it is for the young newbies to find them now, even with our help. Sometimes an old song will pop into my mind but for the life of me, I just can't remember the artist, title or even the lyrics. That can be super frustrating.
This was one of their biggest hits, along with "The look" and 'Dressed for Sucess", where Per also sings. I love their voices together! He also sings on 'Church of your Heart"
I think if you would have been about 10 years younger you would have heard them more. I was 10 in 1993, got a Walkman for birthday and a cassette of their Joyride album. And God did I play that on repeat every day since that day! 😂
Ya, it's very strange how unknown they are given that they had 4 Billboard no 1 hits whereas artists who had nowhere near that number of hits are still remembered. Perhaps part of it is that their success was mainly driven by radio airplay rather than massive success in the broader pop culture of the time. Also when people think of the early 90s in terms of compilations and nostalgia it usually involves way different genres of music like grunge, alternative, rap/hiphop and eurodance rather than straight up pop hits.
Per even mentioned this in an interview or clip about a song once. He said that grunge really changed the music scene, and, I kinda got the impression, thinks it played a part in their lack of popularity, particularly in the States.
Wow!! I'm so happy for you to see my birthplace; The Island outside Swedens southeastcoast Öland!! I was old enough to have been there at "Borgholms slottsruin" where this concert where held but I'm really sad to say I wasn't....I think that by then I was working in Toronto as a nanny!! Love your channel!! Keep going!!❤
This song grabbed me, too! By some random chance, in the summer of 1993, "Dangerous" came on the radio here in the U.S. (I know, shocking, right? U.S. fans will know what I'm talking about...) I loved it! I didn't get Look Sharp! until Christmas that year, but oh boy! did I wear it out! lol. I loved that album so much. ALl my Roxette tapes got worn out. It was pretty crazy. I don't know where you're from--Canada? The U.S.? EMI Records basically dropped the ball on Roxette in the mid-90s in the States, and they didn't get much promotion here after 1994 or so. Most of their fans live in other countries, it would seem. There's a huge South American fanbase--and I mean huge enough that in 1996, Roxette recorded Spanish (rough, not very accurate, but still beautiful) Spanish translations to some of their songs. When they toured from the mid-90s on, they only came to the U.S. for four shows in 2012, on the coasts. I didn't get a chance to go, and now Marie's gone, so I'll never get the chance to listen to her live. It breaks my heart, honestly. Clearly, I'm binge-watching your videos. I'll stop writing novelettes now. :P
Per Gessle is a talented guy - he was also the chief songwriter for Roxette (with considerable input from Marie). Roxette were played tons on the radio in the late 80s and early 90s, but in my opinion their image (and others too of that time) was deemed too "wholesome" for the direction the music industry was taking as the 90s went on. They found a market for shooting, death, drugs, hoes, and exchanging insults with rivals, hahaha! Nice, clean-cut tattoo-free pop-rock became very uncool rather quickly (I'm 47 and was a small-time university radio DJ in the mid-90s so I kind of witnessed it up close and personal, hahaha!) I think that's why Roxette kind of became invisible to the younger generation in spite of their success :D
Great reaction! 🤩 Per Gessle is genious, when it comes to songwriting and producing music. I would dare to say that he's up there with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (Abba). He's also a great singer! 😉 My top 3 favourite Roxette songs are (for now): Joyride Sleeping in my car Fading like a flower Oh, I'd love to see you react to Sabaton, "Seven pillars of wisdom" (official music video or official lyric video, your choice). I would also recommend Majestica, "Above the sky" (official music video). The lead singer, Tommy Johansson is also guitar player in Sabaton. Crazy high level of talent in Majestica! Awesome musicians!
I still wonder why most (if not all) of my friends in the 80s did not like this band. Sure many were metal heads and I expected as much from them. But many of them were Anner Wilson fans. How could they not love this woman's voice? Well, they still have me as a fan. The others are just missing out. You should really do The Look. That is the song that put them on the map. It's an upbeat pop song much like this one. (but better, I think).
On Wikipedia, there's a page that lists the musicians for certain albums. There's mention of a talkbox (I think that's what it's called?) used in this song, but I can't pick out where it's being used. Anyone know? Also, I'm 99% sure that whole thing in the middle was guitar, it just sounded a bit like a harmonica at one point. Likely Jonas Isacsson (their long-time lead guitarist--Per did rhythm, not lead guitar) doing what he does best. :)

The words Per says at then end are a little dig about the song, Per gave a demo of it to another artist, i think they returned the song describing it as too weak!!!!! 😂 I remember reading that somewhere🤔
