Roxy Music Country Life [1974]
Roxy Music is one of the most interesting bands to come out of the 70s - full of surprising musical elements, complex compositions and the amazing singing talent of Bryan Ferry. Their music is exciting and vibrant, dance-y and yet totally rock ‘n roll. They have a sound like no other band.
Bryan Ferry is a fantastic songwriter and somewhat atypical frontman, but one of the best. Country Life may be their greatest album, although Avalon is definitely in the running, and all of their albums are wonderful. The songs are diverse, full-bodied rockers, melodic and perfect for Ferry’s crooner style.
Oh this album, perhaps more than any of their other records, the sound is big, guitar-focused, fat and driving. We have loved this album for years and it’s always fresh and exciting. The vinyl sounds awesome.

Roxy Music have definitely been underrated. Sure took them a long time to get into R&R hall of fame, if that means anything to you. Country Life is one of their best, which is saying a mouthful. Prairie Rose is worth the cost of admission alone. Great story about this album-me Mum was working for the local public library. She used to buy music for them, and would bring the catalog home for me to provide her suggestions. This was one of the albums I suggested. When it arrived at the library she saw the cover and said it would not be appropriate for the library. Oh bummer.

You are good reviewers with good taste and articulation. This is their best if not tied with Avalon. Eno left, thank goodness! Bryan's melodies improved and the band is great. The best songs have Bryan singing more straightforwardly and his voice is smoother but still with great vibrato. Thrill of It All is great; Out of the Blue is even greater; All I Want is You is quality. I only liked Virginia Plain from the first album until this one, not to short-shrift the second record (I would need to re-listen but I won't). I'm just one of those who just loves about 15 songs by them which still puts them in top 50 territory of all-time singers/bands.

Someone bought For your Pleasure for my 21st when it came out; still one of my faves! It was as if the aliens had landed and along with Bowie set the scene for my musical tastes until post Punk.

HUGE Roxy fan since the early 70s! 'Stranded' is probably my favourite, followed by 'County Life' (favourite track from CL is 'A Really Good Time'). However, the first five albums are all my favourites. To me, Art Rock is Bryan painting pictures and images with his lyrics. I once heard him state that he was more interested in painting images in his listeners' minds over actual meaning. Take 'Mother of Pearl', one of my absolute favourites: the overall meaning is elusive, but the images created in my mind are bizarre, wonderful and captivating. When Roxy first appeared on Top of The Pops in 1972, with 'Virginia Plain', it was like aliens had landed. They were soooo different, and absolutely wonderful. Seen them three times live, and they are a great, great live band.

By the way, Prairie Rose is about Jerry Hall, before she dumped Bryan Ferry for Jagger. She's a Texas native, so...... She is now Mrs. Rupert Murdoch! Up, or down the ladder, you decide.

@@nurknanker6105 That's a myth actually my friend, the song was written a long time before he met Hall. Country Life was released in November '74, he didn't meet Hall til August '75. But one of the great Roxy myths I have to say.

The copy I bought used when I was a teenager was the American version. Nothing naughty on the cover. I heard that the models were dating members(or just the bass player) of Can. (Speaking of which, that German band would be a great topic of discussion) Even though the first 5 are my favorite, I’ve never given the Ferry solo albums a fair shake. I remember disliking them but my tastes may have changed. Any opinions on those?

I bought this album in 1974 in a British iconic 60s store called Biba I kept the price tag on it because of the stores name, finally got rid of my vinyl collection and this album with it. Biggest mistake I ever made.
