Roxy’s first two albums with Brian Eno are staggeringly good. I was 17 when this album was released and it blew me away, but then,in London at the time,a great deal of music blew me away.
Their lawyer at the time was was actually called Robert E. Lee. Hence the "make me a deal and make it straight, all signed and sealed I'll take it. To Robert E. Lee I'll show it."
great reaction discovery from Roxy,s first album in 1971 I saw them in concert in1974 and one thing you will appreciate about Roxy is thiey are art rock and you never know what to expect from the next song .I know because I have been listening to them for the past 48 yrs and am going to thier 50th anniversary tour in Austin and not one of thier songs sounds the same as the other . They are true art which you can listen to forevever
'The first two albums were their best, strange, experimental artrock. After Brian Eno left their music became less experimental but still good. Virginia plain wasn't on their debutalbum, todays pressings contain the song but it's a strange song between the other tracks. It's a typical single and i like it.
Oh yes memories from the early 70's - my teenage heyday. Virginia Plain was huge in the UK. FYI, Cynthia 'that man' was the legend that is Bryan Ferry.
your smile got bigger and bigger - that's what this song was all about in 1972 - fun, fun FUN! velvet underground is very much a different kettle of fish - start out with Sweet Jane and take it from there.
the man whose vocals you heard in "Virginia Plain' Also did solo albums during his time with Roxy Music, One especially poetic song frome his solo album "In Your Mind" is the song ""In your Mind" has a great rock melody with the best poetic Lyrics in my years of 60 years of listening to rock music
As a 9 year old who was learning to play the piano the use of synthesizers in the record blew me away. The other record of the time that had a similar affect on me was Son Of My Father by Chicory Tip. 😎
I too saw Velvet Goldmine. I loved the film but it is now a very vague memory. A long time ago in the cinema. An old friend of mine he wanted to see it. So I saw it totally randomly by accident if you will. As for Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music just wow. WOW ! Awesome band. This song is mind blowing !
His critically acclaimed solo album "Theses foolish things" is a mix of rock crooner mixing 30,s thru 50,s music with a rock and roll blend to the point of not changing a lyric which amazed everyone who heard song"Its my party" take note bryan is not gay but Wanted to be true to the art form. His next best album was all covers also , except a Couple of songs the album is "Another time another place This is classic rock crooner romance and I defie you to find anyone who does it better
All those references to Golden Age Hollywood, that retro Rock 'n' Roll glammed up vibe and Eno's futuristic synth doodling! Too much. I was 12, Bowie was just Ziggying, Roxy were blowing things apart. 1972 was the 21st Century as we were imagining it.
Just found you Haniers today…The Jam, Roxy music ? No one else is listening to these bands that were what the young underground-arty and punk type crowd where listening to in the late 70’s, at least that was our experience in Sydney Australia. Roxy’s lead singer Brian Ferry did a cover album Called Hard Rain..Bob Dylan cover…this album regarded as the best cover album ever…must Listen. Ferry was at the time one of London’s top graphic artists. Look up the album covers for Roxy music, one of course featuring Jerry Hall, his one time partner, before Mick.
Not often you hear the oboe as a rock instrument. In fact this may well be the only group to do it. To understand where Ferry's vocal style comes from you need to realise he's a Geordie, & what that accent sounds like. A fabulous band, innovative in so many ways.
This is our first time giving Roxy Music a good hard listen. We know Bryan's work from the 80's. That was spectacular. But for some reason, we never managed to get to listening to his old band. Weird, right?
Liking your reaction vids guys. For some Velvet Underground, I'd recommend I'm waiting for the man, Sweet Jane, Heroin, Venus in furs. For their softer side, try I'll be your mirror, Pale blue eyes, Sunday morning or Stephanie says. Hope you try one and enjoy.
'Waiting For The Man' was in the movie 'Almost Famous'. I (Chris) have the Untitled "Bootleg" DVD, and I worship that movie. I certainly know that song. So, I guess I HAD heard SOME Velvet Underground after all.
There is a great cover of "I'll be your mirror" by Susanna Hoffs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zc-XeMzJ46Q.html. The entire Rainy Day Album is great! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ui2VjVqgM_U.html

haniers if you want a poetic Rock song from Bryan ferry Of Roxy music his best Is From his solo album "in Your Mind " Song Inyour mind THe Lyrics Are Astounding Poeticly and you will love the sound It,s from around 1975-76
Some suggestions for classic late 70s/early 80s British music ; "Are friends electric" by Gary Numan, "Geno" by Dexys Midnight Runners, "Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil. All three are very different to each other and all are well worth listening to.
jusst had to leave you with 2 more adventures songs that are will appreciated but not will exposed from the lead singer from band Van Der Graff Generator. This is a alter ego version of what he normally produces and is a solo product. Known ass NadirsBig Chance " heavy rock influencewith some quirky wierdnes in some sons songs to listen to our "Nadirs Big Chance" And Open Your Eyes for the Theme of the album
I would like to suggest a 40 years down the line song fromBryan Ferrys, album "Frantic" co produced by the man created the artistic mystique of Roxy Mr Brian Eno. The song is called"I Thought'it is lite and sentimental but very romantic
Actually, you could have played this in an 80's dance club if the crowd was hip enough. Roxy Music was a hugely popular and enormously successful band in the UK and in Europe... many people said they were laying out the blueprint for the '80s during the mid-70s. Duran Duran has said that without Roxy Music, Duran wouldn't even exist. Roxy Music was the direct inspiration for the entire "New Romantic" movement. Personally, I'm not a huge Velvet Underground fan (though I am a huge Roxy Music fan). A more modern band of it has some of the Velvet Underground's vibe is the *Jesus and Mary Chain*. I would check out: "Blues from a Gun" "Between Planets" or "Head On"
Jim Morrison, the doors, lou reed, the velvet underground and nico, roxy music, with brian eno not when it became the brian ferry band, Blondie, psycadelic furs. all stuff you should check out.
you need to listen to roxy songs at least 3 timesthey will grab you after a few listens and then your hooked you need to understand there is a artisic complexity that no other group including Bowie could match and he has admitted to that
We definitely know Sultans Of Swing. This was one of the songs my (Chris) band, back in the day, would play with during rehearsals. Our lead guitarist was miffed that he didn't have the skill to do the song justice. We had a friend come by to record us who owned a guitar repair shop and was a crazy good guitarist himself. He barely got by showing us how he did it. Almost perfect, if a bit sloppy. We loved it, though.
If you want to see what they looked like check out the great Do The Strand live from the 2nd album ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rmr-ANvGswg.html
