Almost all songs in the early to mid '60s were short.Terry Kirkland of the Association touches on it briefly in an interview with the Huffington Post seven years ago. Google "Terry Kirkland Association Huffington Post" and read the article. We too always wondered why songs were so short back then, and many back then still managed to squeeze in an interlude (Not heard too much today) despite their brevity. :)
Two adds: The bass and lead guitar player were basketball teammates of mine at Southwest Texas. Also, I pulled the Traits’ equipment trailer to several venues on SE Texas. Probably not Alvin, though.
Renews my faith in humanity to see 3.9k likes on this one. To the other 3.89999k- we should join our own cult. We are clearly tuned in and may be our species only hope.
Love this song. For a scorchin' hot new (relatively, 2001) version of it, check out Los Straitjackets with Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders fame on vocals. Crank it up!
@@borbetomagus Now THAT was dancin’! With Cab Calloway to boot! That final sequence with the brothers split-jumping over each other all the way down the staircase, following by the split slide down the staircase-whooee baby, there’s nothing like that in today’s dance world.
Yep, but I'm familiar with it already. This is a song that is just too short. They should've written at least one more verse, and then the chorus for a second time.
Just heard this in the radio and I suddenly realised I had no idea what Roy Head looked like..turned to this clip and I am utterly amazed! What a singer, what a mover! He deserved to be MUCH bigger but that was one helluva song. Brilliant!
Too bad he didn't extend the moon walk for the longer lengths that Michael Jackson did. Those awesome acrobatic moves went beyond anything Jackson ever did. My knees are now aching from simply watching this exhibition! As the saying goes: "Don't try this at home" unless you can afford knee replacement surgery on down the line.🥺😫😆Roy Head, born in Three Rivers, Texas in 194l, passed away at age 79 from a heart attack on September 21, 2020. He previously suffered a stroke in 2016 followed by surgery to repair a ruptured aorta. From 1965 through 1985 he had forty four 45rpm singles released. But this first recording seen here was his only "smash hit," charting at #2. Thirty six of his singles charted. 🌠Milton Moore🌠 Las Vegas, Nevada
Besides being a credible blue-eyed-soul stylist, Head was known for gyrations and dance steps in his performances that could arguably leave Elvis Presley in the dust and rival the best moves of James Brown. Head claimed that he had been kicked off a tour by Brown for being too good a dancer. “In a way, it was kind of a compliment, because I was burnin’,” he said. “(Brown) had always been my idol, and I was awed just being on three shows with him.”
He could never rival James Brown. His moves in this are hilariously weird. He doing too much. I can tell his influence is from James Brown but he needed a choreographer to help him out. Not sure what a blue eyed soul stylist that must be made up but he indeed had and soul and one can tell he was not racist but embraced the Americans that were brown.
I was a huge fan of Roy Head. You & I were probably in some of the same clubs watching him. It was 60's and 70's for me. I think I wore out my 45 rpm of Treat Her Right.
@@rogermesserly3893 I think the first time I saw him was around 67 at Taylor Hall in Pasadena. After that I remember seeing him at The Catacombs on multiple occasions. I Got out of the Army October of 71 and think I saw him once or twice after that.
@@roberthorton8135 The Catacombs-what a blast from the past! I was never at the original location, but I very much remember visiting the new site at the corner of University and Kirby. I’ll be darned if I can remember who I saw there, definitely not Roy Head, unfortunately.
Never realized how Roy Head took his cues, his inspiration, from the Godfather of Soul himself, Mr. James Brown. The moves, the horns--pretty fly for a white guy! 😁😁

@@LisaDavis1 he said. “(Brown) had always been my idol, and I was awed just being on three shows with him.” James was before Head, how can Head be his idol if head was before James. He claimed that James kicked him off a tour, a claim no one has ever substantiate. You should learn to read moron, you pretty much disproved you own argument.
That Band was amazing! I don’t remember watching Roy Head but thank you for the upload this is priceless. His song was big here in LA in 1965. WOW what Moves!!! I was 15 in 65😉
On this day in 1965 {October 9th} Roy Head performed "Treat Her Right" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!' A little over one month earlier on September 4th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} & spent 11 weeks on the Top 100 One month and four days later on Nov. 13th, 1965 he was back on 'Shindig!' and performed the song again R.I.P. Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013} & Mr. Head will celebrate his 73rd birthday in three months on January 9th
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's TV spot brought me here. This movie is going to open up a whole world of awesome, unknown music for me, just like all of his other movies!
Yea Michael never took credit for it. He said he always took from other artists and just added his own spin to it. But it's really cool to his influences.
One night long ago I was in Antones on The Drag to see Doug Sahm and The West Side Horns with Augie on keyboards. I always knew when you go to a Doug show anything could and usually did happen. At the time I had no idea who Roy Head was but if any of yall wanna give your age you recall that ally outside Antones and the great Ruby's BBQ. Lots of weak braincells destroyed there. Roy came up to me and a friend like he knew us...told the boh of us...Thats a BBQ place right there you know how I know that? ....It smells like BBQ...I sure miss Kojack guarding the backdoor. at Antones.
First, who greased the stage? Poor lad can hardly stand up. Second, the aerobic sisters in the background are doing a great job,... Seriously, great vid...
