Gotta' check out George Thorogood's version, too. Roy Head even does a guest cameo in the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MrjxXQIi7Qo.html
Jamal, this version went to #2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Rhythm & Blues chart in July 1965. The moves were strictly James Brown inspired. And yes, this is the original. Head wrote it.
Roy Head was a friend of mine...lived 2 miles away from me. Got to jam with him back in 1984 at his house during a show outside with our 50's band the Fender Benders. He was incredibly down to earth and talked to everyone. Super talented, and his son Sundance is carrying it on. A side note, it's ironic that Jamel's shirt says "Humble" on it, because just a mile away over the river is the city of Humble, Texas....same place where Howard Hughes was born. Crazy world. RIP Roy, see you on the other side, and I'll bring my drums like you told me to.
I will add. Swiss Alps Dance Hall is midway between La Grange and Schulenburg Texas. Other notables that performed were B J Thomas and Triumphs. Traits over years Dean Scott, Johnny Winter. Mark James wrote Suspicious Mind.
Jamel, Roy son, Sundance Head who was on Blake Shelton's team, was the winner of The Voice, season 11, in December 2016. Sundance and Blake performed "Treat Her Right" for his father. Roy passed on on September 21, 2020.
I heard this track when l was a kid, loved it, now l sing and play it, thank you Roy for the memories 🙏 they don't write and sound like this any more, real music, absolutely love the foot work he must have had Teflon on those shoes 👌👍
Loved your reaction, brother. Roy Head and James Brown must’ve been brothers from a different mother. Don’t let the gymnastics distract you from his feet; they liked like they were gliding on air or sliding across ice when they slowed down enough to see them. All while dancing in tight pants on a tiny platform. I always went wild when this came blasting out of my little old transistor radio📻 . I think he was pretty much a one hit wonder, but what a hit. Thanks, man.😎✌🏽☮️🎸
I grew up 2 blocks from his place. For years he was just Mr. H to us. We knew he had a few hits but until I went to college had no idea he was that smooth. Cool dude
You must watch the film The Commitments about a group of Irish kids starting a soul band in Ireland. This song is in the beginning of the film. The music in that film is great.
I was going to say the same also. I first heard this song from that film. My friends and I were all obsessed with that movie. Jamel, you must watch it!
Roy always held a grudge against The Beatles. Their new song " I Wanna Hold Your Hand" kept this song from being #1 that year and it always bothered him. R.I.P. Roy, you still did good.
Roy was a class act. Clearly influenced by James Brown, he threw in a few moves of his own which were impossible to imitate. Johnny Thunders also did a very good version back in 1987. Gone, but not forgotten.
WOW WOW WOW!!! MY mother Dated Roy Head when she was a Teenager. She Was From Crystal City and He was From Three Rivers, this was before my Mom Met My Dad...BTW My Dad Worked For John Strait, when George and Bubba were just Kids, Building Fences Such A Small World in South West Texas, Dimmit County....
What’s weird, I was just listening to this song on my playlist not more than an hour ago. Back when life and music were Fun. Cool Jamel, Oh, and Happy New Year!
Now take a look at George Thorogood's cover, with a cameo by Roy himself. My favorite version. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MrjxXQIi7Qo.html
Tom Jones was always too slick and "corporate" for me, this guy is feelin' it! That' some dancing! He could teach Michael Jackson some new moves. and dig those white go-go boots!
But Jones makes it work. Joe Cocker was right behind Jones in the covers department. He did good with it, especially "With A Little Help From My Friends".
Happy new year, y'all! My late husband's brother here in the Houston area used to be drinking buddies with Roy Head, and he said that Roy was a pretty eccentric dresser sometimes when they'd go out (just as a goof, I'm sure) -- like he'd wear a shirt and tie and sports coat with a pair of shorts. 😂 Sounds like he would've been a hoot to hang with. Anyway, the videos with him dancing blow my mind.
I never heard of this dude before, but this version of the song AND HIS DANCING were SO COOL! Thanks to whoever sent you the video. BTW: Loved those white go-go boots on the dancers. I had a pair myself a long time ago.
They were also in the UK charts at the same time!! Mick Jackson had a few other hits, but I don't think he needed to work much after The Jackson's covered his song, he could just sit back & count his royalty cheques!!! £££££££££ 😲
If you haven't already, check out the eponymous album _Osibisa._ I can't pick a favorite cut, so I've linked to the entire album. It was one of my favorites in 1971. The first cut, "The Dawn," opens with the words: "Osibisa. Criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness." Can't get any better than that. 😊 Even if you don't do a video on the album, listen to it for the sheer enjoyment. O S I B I S A 1971 Full HQ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I-RbQjI3g-A.html "Osibisa are a Ghanaian Afro Rock band, founded in London in 1969 by four expatriate African and three Caribbean musicians. Their music is a fusion of African, Caribbean, jazz, funk, rock, Latin, and R&B and highlife." - Wikipedia - - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osibisa
@Atheos B. Sapien The great thing about music & dance is that they evolve. Everyone builds on whoever came before (and probably after, too). Generally I think it's more accurate to say artists are inspired by other artists, and they often give credit where it's due - that's how I've discovered some great, less famous, earlier artists - listening to interviews with ones who made it big, who talk about their influences.
Oh yeah, some good 'ol 1960's beach/surf music. I've never heard this version before but it is AWESOME !!!! I guess the dance could be called The Roy Head Slide, lol. 👏👏👏👍✌️❤️😁
Yep, I saw this one earlier this year. Such a blast to go back in time. That voice of the singer can be heard in the fantastic movie by Quinton Tarantino, "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood."
Because of that Tom Jones video on here I too have discovered Roy Head for the first time. And I just love him. I’ve been watching loads of him on RU-vid. Thanks J. Your reactions sometimes open up a whole new world of fun.
This song was recorded and released in 1965, my oldest brother no doubt had this on 45 I honestly don't know for sure since my oldest brother is gone. I do remember hearing Roy sing this song I was only 5 when it came out. I was hoping you would do a reaction to this classic and I was not surprised at your reaction since Roy was so very talented.
Roy was just a country boy from Three Rivers Texas but lived in Houston Texas until his death a couple of years ago. His son is Sundance Head who won the voice about 3 years ago singing an Eta James song At Last check it out they are friends of the family. We miss Roy
You make me crack up when I’m not in the mood to crack up- powerful- Happy New Year, Mr Jamel- you’ve been an incredibly good influence on me during the roughest 2020 days. Yes, 2020 was historically dark-you reminded me of light.
Brother Jamal. Sometimes I think during the 60’s performers liked to get their James Brown going. Roy did a pretty great job of that. Happy New Year 🎆🎈🎊 my brother and God bless.
great video, love your shirt, yeah ol Roy Head man, I grew up with that one, Roy was a wild guy around Houston Texas back in the day, the original band broke up so were a one hit wonder kinda thing, they got into a knife fight and free for all as Im told and broke up and went back to Texas lol
Snicky, Roy lives in a small town outside Houston called Porter Tex. His son won on the voice awhile back. Big cowboy Sundance head with a great voice. Thanks hon♥️♥️♥️♥️
I had to hit "subscribe" after your reaction! You are so on point with this! Your reaction was as crazy as mine! Watching the video actually causes physical pain because there is no way I could ever do those moves! I joked that I "broke my hips" watching his video... This guy was born in a little town in Texas about 30 miles from where I grew up so I am proud to see interest in his music. I never knew about him until Billy Gibbons did a cover. His dancing level is so different that it just stands out. Really cool to see a local man, from back in the 60's, be so amazing! Your RU-vid video does him right! Thank you!
Definitely gotta listen the version from The Commitments. It's a tribute to Roy Head but the trio of backup singers and the longer ending make it even better.
First time I ever heard this was in Tarantino’s movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Amazing soundtrack, look up that movies version of California Dreaming, and You Keep Me Hanging On
Hi J., One of the bands I was in many years ago covered this song, but I never saw this video... WOW! Always a thumbs up. Happy New Year to you and your's. - Brooklyn Mike
Happy New Year Jamel. I grew up to the music of the 60s but left a lot of it behind. Your reaction videos have brought it back to me with renewed love. There are loads of reaction channels but yours is truly the best. I love it.
I don't think spas means spasmodic. It is a much more derogatory term and a shortened form of a word which these days is very non-PC---and probably illegal to say it.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! WOW !! never seen or heard this before, the man's ice skating ; ) great reaction jamel! TOM JONES "RAISE YOUR HANDS"with janis joplin for reaction.peace and all the best for the new year.
