He's got a fearsome reputation but he seems really good at translating that into something that kids can understand. I reckon he'd be much better as a youth coach than as a manager who has to deal with idiotic questions in press conferences.
As scouser and an LFC fan I have to admit Keane was a great player... Ole style tackles which would be seen as gbh in today's game. Like Gerrard Keane had loyalty.. The both of them could have chosen what club to play for which again I respect him for that 👏
Two completely different people. At one stage, Gerrard wanted to sign for Chelsea, so he would have a better chance at winning the prem. Maybe he was worried about the stick he would get (including his family) from Liverpool fans. The increase in wages to stay at Liverpool may have softened the blow.
got to say although not as tough a person as Keane I do put Joey Barton in the same kind of ilk as Keane, that anchor in the middle, leading and communicating with the team and getting stuck in, goodness I miss that kind of player for the toon. Absolutely love Keane though, got massive respect for him. he might run his mouth sometimes but everyone does sometimes.
They both had nasty tempers on the pitch. Apart from that, that's where the comparisons end. Roy was a highly motivated and dedicated player with bags of skill and talent. Not to mention, his leadership qualities on and off the pitch and natural-born winner. People don't realize some of the positive work he's done to help younger players. Whereas, Joey was the face of modern football culture. Overpaid, undisciplined, selfish and pretentious. Joey had potential to be a fine player, but spent the most part of his career being a trouble maker and two fingers to the fans who paid to watch him play.
I remember there were murmurings that Sir Alex Ferguson had his sights on Joey Barton as a long term Roy Keane replacement when Barton was just starting out at City. There really were comparisons to be drawn between the two, but the guy above me is right - Barton ultimately lacked the discipline and drive that Keane had in inexhaustible supply. However maybe SAF could have got that out of Barton? We’ll never know.
There's two sides to that world cup story, Roy was wrong to walk out but Mick McCarthy knew what was going to happen when he called him out in front of the the squad, it should have been between the two of them in private, Keano would have respected that and got on with it.
